NCAA Division 1 Championships, Eugene, USA, 10-13 June

A week ahead of her debut for the Great Britain and Northern Ireland senior squad at the European Team Championships in Cheboksary, Russia, Rhianwedd Price (coach: Houston Franks) produced a lifetime best to win a thrilling 1500m final at the NCAA Division 1 Championships at Hayward Field, Eugene. The 20-year-old from Llandrindod Wells in mid-Wales – also the home town of Kirsty Wade, the 1987 European Cup 1500m winner and three-time Commonwealth gold medallist – broke 4:10 for the first time, edging out Shelby Houlihan in 4:09.56.

In the women’s 5,000m Shildon’s European cross country silver medallist Kate Avery (Tony Simmons) was fourth in the 5,000m in 15:41.95 – two places ahead of Hallamshire Harrier Calli Thackery (Joe Franklin), who clocked 15:47.15.  European junior 3,000m steeplechase champion Zak Seddon (Jeff Seddon) finished eighth in the final of his specialist event in 8:43.77 but the Bracknell athlete was quicker in his semi-final, placing third in 8:41.12.

Former world youth triple jump champion Ben Williams (John Crotty) produced a lifetime best of 16.74m to take fourth place – a notable advance for the 23-year-old Sale Harrier, who now tops the 2015 UK rankings. Ipswich’s Matti Mortimore (Justin St Claire) threw 72.44m for seventh place in the men’s javelin, while Southampton’s Freya Jones (Don Babbitt) was seventh in the women’s event with 54.11m.

Mohammed VI IAAF World Challenge Meeting, Rabat, Morocco, 14 June

Olympic fourth-placer Lawrence Clarke (Malcolm Arnold) was close to his season’s best in a high class 110m hurdles field. The 2010 Commonwealth bronze medallist finished third in 13.56 (+0.7), just 0.03 outside the time he clocked at the Sainsbury’s Birmingham Grand Prix the previous Sunday. Pascal Martinot-Lagarde was a clear winner in 13.37, with fellow Frenchman Wilhem Belocian pipping Clarke for second in 13.55.

European champion Martyn Rooney (Rana Reider) finished eighth in the 400m in 46.63. The one lap race was won by Grenada’s Olympic champion Kirani James in 45.15

South of England AA Under 20 and Senior Championships, Lee Valley, 13-14 June

World Junior Championship finalist Taylor Campbell (Paul Dickenson) broke the British junior hammer record for the third time this season, the 20-year-old Windsor, Slough Eton and Hounslow AC athlete throwing 76.87m. That was a 2cm improvement on the UK under 20 mark the 20-year-old made in Halle, Germany last month. It also broke the Southern U20 Championship record that Campbell set a year ago, 72.93m.

Campbell was not the only junior in outstanding form. In the Under 20 championship 110m hurdles, Jack Hatton (Malcolm Arnold) clocked a cracking 13.75 (+1.4), matching the qualifying standard for the European Junior Championships.

In the senior ranks, Brighton and Hove’s Gwilym Cooper (Marina Armstrong) slashed 0.96 off his personal best with a winning time of 51.86 in the 400m hurdles. Bedford and County’s Josh Cox (Alan Watts) got the better of Blackheath and Bromley’s Kieran Daly (Jonas Tawiah-Dodoo) in a gripping 100m, prevailing by 0.01 in 10.65.

Shaftesbury’s Zane Duquemin (John Hillier), who competes in the discus for Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the European Team Championships next weekend, won the discus with 57.63m and the shot with 17.16m.

Northern Athletics Under 20 and Senior Championships, Sportcity, Manchester, 13-14 June

Louise Bloor (Antonio Minichiello) overcame the challenge of Trafford club-mate Seren Bundy-Davies (Stephen Ball) to complete a North of England sprint double. Having won the 100m on the opening day in 11.62 (+0.5), Bloor blasted to victory in the 200m in 23.65 (+0.7). Stepping down in distance, European indoor 400m bronze medallist Bundy-Davies finished runner-up in 24.10. Bloor’s training partner Nikita Campbell Smith (Antonio Minichiello) took the 400m in 54.96

European Athletic Festival, Bydgoszcz, Poland, 14 June

Anyika Onuora (Rana Reider) moved to second place behind world champion Christine Ohuruogu in the 2015 UK rankings with a 400m win in 51.67. Margaret Adeoye (Linford Christie) finished fourth in the same race in 52.94, a season’s best. In a separate 400m, Kelly Massey (Stephen Ball) was runner up in a season’s best of 52.65, with Amy Allcock (Nick Dakin) fifth in 53.32.  Reigning British 400m hurdles champion Niall Flannery (Nick Dakin) ducked under 50 seconds for the first time this season, finishing second in 49.77.

Le Cheile International- Irish Milers’ Club Meeting, Leixlip, Ireland, 13 June

European U23 silver medallist Sebastian Rodger (James Hillier) won the 400m hurdles in a season’s best 49.84 with Tom Lancashire (Steve Vernon) earning victory in the 1500m recording a time of 3:40.04.

TNT Express Multi Events Meeting, Kladno, Czech Republic, 12-13 June

Reigning British junior decathlon champion David Hall (Ian Grant) continued his impressive progress as a first-year senior with a second successive top-five finish in an IAAF Combined Events Challenge event. Last month the 20-year-old Dartford Harrier finished fifth in the Multistars meeting in Florence with a lifetime best tally of 7517 points and over two days of competition at Kladno in the Czech Republic he racked up another PB score. Hall placed fifth again, this time with 7651 points, in a competition won with 7682 points by Marek Lukas of the Czech Republic.

Hall, who was 13th in the decathlon at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Eugene last summer, made a clean sweep of all of the running events, winning the 100m in 10.84 (-1.7), the 400m in 46.98 and the 1500m in 4:24.79, a PB.  He also clocked a PB of 14.98 (-0.8) in the 110m hurdles and leapt an outdoor best of 6.83m (+0.3) in the long jump. His other marks were: 12.16m (shot); 1.96m (high jump); 37.86m (discus); 4.45m (pole vault) and 53.43m (javelin).

Hall’s tally was just 49 points short of the UK Athletics European U23 Championships qualifying standard, 7,700 points, but he now stands second overall in the 2015 IAAF Combined Events Challenge series. He has 15,168 points from two competitions.

Gouden Spike Meeting, Leiden, Netherlands, 13 June

Stockport’s Rory Evans (John Smith) claimed fourth place in both the 200m in 21.19 (+0.5) and over 400m in 47.61. Grant Plenderleith (David Lothian) was fifth in the same 400m race in 47.68.

Birchfield’s Amy Hillyard (Kelly Sotherton) clocked 55.69 for sixth place in one of the series of women’s 400m races, while Stockport’s Patrick Martin (David Turnbull) was 19th in the 10,000m setting 29:45.99. Glasgow City’s David John Martin was fifth in the long jump with a windy 7.03m (+3.1) and legal 6.83m (0.0).
