Away from the European Team Championships and England Athletics U23 & U20 Championships (Full reports can be found on this website) there were many more British athletes competing around the world.

IPC Grand Prix, Berlin – 21 June 

Invictus Games gold medallist Dave Henson made his mark on the international stage recording a time of 26.44 in the T42 200m. Despite a headwind of -2.4, the 30 year old landed a new lifetime best and looks set to go from strength-to-strength this summer as he targets a place on the GB & NI team for the IPC World Championships in Doha in October. 

“I feel pretty good, very happy. There was a fairly strong head wind to run into, but to get a new PB with that kind of wind at my first International is pretty good actually – I feel quite chuffed. The experience at my first international competition has been good, we came out early so I could be classified, and that gave me a bit of time to rest and take in the environment, as well as to see some of the competitors training down at the track. Being able to give myself time for rest has been really important. I’ve really enjoyed it.” 

After breaking the T37 400m world record and setting a new personal best in the 100m, Georgie Hermitage (coach: Paul MacGregor) set a new best in the 200m clocking 28.49 in what was a remarkable weekend for the sprinter.

US Paralympic Championships, St Paul, Minnesota, USA, 19-21 June

Paralympic T34 100m and 200m champion Hannah Cockroft (Jenni Banks) clinched a hat-trick of US titles on the Hamline University track in St Paul. 

The Halifax woman won the T33-34 100m in 17.61 (+1.7), 400m in 64.16 and 800m in 2:08.85. In all three races, she relegated Alexa Halko to second place. ‘Hurricane Hannah’ now moves on to Indianapolis for the second leg of her whirlwind US tour, the Fast Cow Invitational, which runs from 26-30 June.

Isaac Towers (Peter Wyman) was second in the T33-34 200m in a time of 31.85 (0.7) and third in the 800m in 1:52.60. Richard Chiassaro (Banks) recorded times of 14.67 and 49.45 in the T54 100m and 400m in America.

Meeting Elite d’Herouville St Clair, Herouville St Clair, France, 18 June

European 100m champion James Dasaolu (Steve Fudge) was just 0.01 outside his season’s best with a 10.14 clocking (0.00) in the final. The Croydon Harrier, who ran 10.13 in the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene on 30 May and 10.14 after opening his season with 10.14 in the Doha Diamond League meeting on 14 May, maintained his consistent form, winning by 0.02 from South Africa’s Henrico Bruintjes. Dasaolu also won his heat in 10.18 (+1.5).

British indoor champion Nathan Fox (Frank Attoh) finished third in the triple jump with 15.82m.

Mattoni Olomouc Half Marathon, Olomouc, Czech Republic

International marathoner Aly Dixon (self-coached) was the top European finisher among world class opposition in the Czech city. The 36-year-old Sunderland Strollers athlete was tenth in 74:15 in a women’s section won by Mary Keitany, the two-time London Marathon winner and former world half marathon champion and world record holder. The Kenyan set a new course record of 66:38.

Gateshead Harrier Matty Hynes (Stan Markley) finished 13th in the men’s race in 65:40 – over a minute down on the time from the Paris Half Marathon in March that ranks him second to Mo Farah in the 2015 UK list. The men’s race was won by Kenyan Kiprop Kiptis in 60:21.
