Away from Beijing, there was plenty of action taking place across the country with many young athletes aiming for age-group titles. Here are some of the highlights from the Bank Holiday weekend.

England Athletics U15/U17 Championships and IPC age-group Championships – Bedford, 29-30 August

Shelby Watson (Coach: Ian Mirfin) went inside the existing T33 world records for 100m, 200m and 400m – the highlight was her 20.89 PB in 100m (+0.5).

Watson’s Red Star AC team-mate Samantha Kinghorn (Coach: Ian Mirfin), a triple IPC European champion, produced some dominant displays, particularly in the 1500m race recording a time of 3:52.11 in the mixed race.

A tactical start saw Kare Adenegan (Job King) lead out the first lap in 64 seconds and the youngster became only the fourth T34 British woman ever to go inside four minutes with 3:59.88. Isaac Towers (Peter Wyman) was the eventual winner posting 3:45.80.  

Adenegan also moved up to fifth in the world rankings with a 18.89 PB (+0.5), equalling the time set a week earlier in Coventry. T13 athlete Erin McBride (Robert Roberts) was in action in the 100m and 400m, clocking 13.47 and 63.10 to win the ambulant races in Bedford.

In the U15/U17 Championships, one of the highlights of the weekend saw a record-breaking run by Amber Anning (Steve King) who improved upon Dina Asher-Smith’s U15 300m record twice, extending the mark to 38.73. In addition, IAAF World Youth Championships heptathlete Niamh Emerson (David Feeney) leaped a new personal best of 1.82m to extend her previous best recorded in Cali by 3cm.

There was a British U17 record in the women’s hammer, with Katie Head (Paul Head) setting a mark of 62.51m to continue a fine year of the event in Britain. Jona Efoloko (John Smith) did the double in the U17 100m and 200m with Ben Dijkstra outclassing the field to win the U17 1500m in 3:56.86.

Paisley 10km – 30 August

European Cross Country team member Callum Hawkins (Robert Hawkins) was narrowly outside his 10km personal best as he recorded 29:24 in Scotland this weekend. Hawkins, who is aiming for a tilt at the marathon in 2016, was just five seconds off his best mark set in Brighton earlier this year.
