University of New Mexico Collegiate Classic, Albuquerque – 6 February 2016

Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth champion Greg Rutherford (Coach: Dan Pfaff) kicked off his season in style by leaping a British indoor long jump record in New Mexico, 8.26m. It was the perfect start for Rutherford as he begins the 2016 season targeting a defence of his Olympic title. It also coupled as a world leading mark at this early stage of year.

In addition, Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake (Dennis Shaver) continued his impressive start to the indoor season by clocking a lifetime best over 60m, 6.70.

World Indoor Tour, Karlshruhe – 7 February 2016

Dina Asher-Smith (John Blackie) recorded a seasons best of 7.11 in the final at the inaugural IAAF World Indoor Tour, finishing third behind European 60m gold medallist Dafne Schippers. The 20 year-old earlier posted 7.14 in the heats. Compatriot Daryll Neita (Jonas Tawiah-Dodoo) was in fine form on her way to a PB of 7.29 to place fifth in the heat.

Tiffany Porter (Rana Reider) started the Olympic year with 7.94 in the final of the 60m hurdles, after posting 7.98 earlier in the day. There were improvements from Lucy Hatton (Jerzy Maciukiewicz) who clocked 8.01 twice, placing 5^th in the final behind winner Kendra Harrison from America.

Harry Aikines-Aryeetey (Benke Blomkvist) opened his season with 6.68 in the heats before pulling out of the final as a precaution. In the long jump, Dan Bramble (Frank Attoh) was second with 7.72m.

Mondeville Indoor Meeting, France – 7 February

Sean Safo-Antwi (Tawiah-Dodoo) continued his strong start to the season, setting the fastest time by a Briton over 60m this year with 6.55. The time confirmed a victory in France with Andrew Robertson (Dan Cossins) third with 6.67.

Serita Solomon (Michelle Bovell) showed the depth of women’s 60m hurdles by winning in France in 8.07 with Yasmin Miller (Lloyd Cowan) fifth with 8.22.

Jazmin Sawyers (Alan Lerwill) won the women’s long jump with 6.62m as Desiree Henry (Rana Reider) was fifth in the 60m final, clocking 7.32 after earlier setting a time of 7.30. In the men’s 60m hurdles, David Omoregie (Benke Blomkvist) was third with 7.68 ahead of fellow Brit Lawrence Clarke (Samba-Koundy Giscard) posting 7.87 in sixth.

Armory Track Invitational, New York – 5-6 February 

Over in New York, Chris O’Hare (Terrance Mahon) showed his intentions for the 2016 season by winning the men’s invitational mile in 3:54.59, two seconds outside his personal best. It was an encouraging start for Scottish athlete who also recorded a time of 3:39.28 over 1500m at the same meeting.

2012 European 800m champion Lynsey Sharp (Rana Reider) began her indoor campaign with 2:02.25 in the event.

Tracktown Meeting, Portland, USA – 5 February

Tom Farrell (Mark Rowland) moved to third on the British all-time indoor 3000m standings after a solid performance in Portland, which will host the World Indoor Championships next month. The Border Harrier ran 7:42.47, which was a personal best and the perfect start to his 2016 season.

Pedro’s Cup, Lodz, Poland – 6 February

World and European Indoor 60m champion Richard Kilty (Benke Blomkvist) was second in Poland behind Cuba’s Yunier Perez in a time of 6.62. In the women’s equivalent, world long jump silver medallist Shara Proctor (Rana Reider) made a rare appearance over 60m but ran a commendable 7.36.

Welsh International, Cardiff – 7 February

Abby Ward (Ian Hill) set a British Indoor youth best in the U20 women’s high jump with 1.89m, a breakthrough jump by the Wakefield athlete. It was equalled the British age 16 best which has stood since 1984, set by Debbie Marti.

Luke Cutts (Trevor Fox) beat his training partner Adam Hague (Fox) with a height of 5.70m with an impressive series from the European junior champion Hague who jumped 5.53m. Hague attempted the 5.70m height which would have been a British junior record but failed to make the height on this occasion.

2015 IAAF World Youth Championship athletes made an impression in Cardiff with Toby Harries (Jon Bigg) looking in fine form in the 200m, posting a meeting record of 21.45 in the U20 race. Oliver Bromby (Sara MacDonald-Gray) and Hannah Brier (Neal Merry) won the U20 60m races respectively.

Banska Bystrica, Slovakia – 4 February

Robbie Grabarz (Fuzz Caan) leapt his best height since 2012 in the high jump with 2.33m. It was a swift return to form for the Olympic bronze medallist who placed fourth overall with Chris Kandu in ninth with 2.20m.

Isobel Pooley (Fuzz Caan) was equal fourth in a tight women’s competition as Morgan Lake (Eldon Lake) matched her height of 1.88m for seventh place.

Meyo Invitational, Indianapolis, USA – 5-6 February

For the first time in her career, Cindy Ofili (James Henry) ran under eight seconds for 60m Hurdles, her time of 7.97 confirmed a win on the day as well.

Holowy Sprawdzian, Poland – 6 February

There was an appearance over 200m for Jamie Bowie (Piotr Haczek) in Poland, winning with a best of 21.78.

Trinec, Czech Republic – 7 February

It was a good competition for Morgan Lake (Eldon Lake) who had an attempt at equalling her British junior record of 1.94m but had to settle for 1.92m and a fine second place finish in the Czech Republic.

Isobel Pooley (Fuzz Caan) was sixth in 1.90m, an improvement to her display in Slovakia a couple of days previously.  Her training partner Robbie Grabarz (Fuzz Caan) jumped 2.25m for fifth in the men’s equivalent.

BUCS Cross Country Championships, Gloucester – 6 February

Callum Hawkins (Robert Hawkins) produced a dominant display on the muddy fields of Plock Court to win the BUCS cross country title for the first time. The University of West Scotland athlete won by nearly a minute from Birmingham University pair Andrew Heyes (Keith Whitelam) and European Cross U23 champion Jonny Davies (Rob McKim).

In the women’s race, Pippa Woolven (Janet Nash) stole the lead in the closing stages as she passed team mate Rebecca Murray (Alex Stanton) to make it a Birmingham University one-two. Jenny Nesbitt (David Walker) confirmed her place on the podium in third, earning valuable points for Bath University.

European Club Cross Country Championships, Turkey – 7 February

Morpeth finished seventh in the senior men’s race at the inaugural European Club Cross Country Championships. After booking their place at the event at the Liverpool Cross Challenge last November, they had three athletes in the top 30, led home by Lewis Timmins (Lindsay Dunn) in 25^th with Carl Avery narrowly behind in 27^th.
