Scottish Athletics Throws Grand Prix, Livingston, Scotland

IPC World Champion Jo Butterfield (coach: Phil Peat) made a strong start to her 2016 campaign with a personal best and unofficial world record of 22.21 in the F51 club throw. It added two centimeters to her previous best and was the perfect start to the Paralympic year for the Red Star athlete.  

European Athletics Race Walking Permit Meeting, Podebrady, Czech Republic, 9 April

The boom time for British race walking continued in the Czech Republic on Saturday with Callum Wilkinson (Mick Graham) following up the trailblazing record-breaking feats of Tom Bosworth (Andi Drake) by leading the Great Britain junior team to victory with a superb individual triumph. The 19-year-old Enfield and Haringey walker won the men’s U20 race in 41:33 and was backed up by PB performances from Cameron Corbishley (Andi Drake), tenth in 43:05, and Guy Thomas (Martin Rush), eleventh in 43:15. Farther back in the field, Christopher Snook (Verity Snook) was 31st in 46:22 and Tom Partington, 34th in 46:41, both also PBs and qualifying standards for the European Youth Championships later this year.

In the U20 women’s 10km Emma Achurch (Patrice Terranova) clocked a PB 47:49 in fourth and Molly Jade Davey (Terranova) was 32nd in 57:29. Sophie Lewis Ward (Noel Carmody) clocked a best of 23:26 to also claim a European Youth qualifying time.

Surrey Disability Championships, Kingsmeadow, 9-10 April

Double World Champion Georgie Hermitage (Paul MacGregor) got her season off to a flying start with two new personal bests over the T37 100m and 200m. The 400m world record holder recorded a time of 13.66 in the 100m – just 0.07 outside Kadeena Cox’s world record set last year. There was also an unofficial world record in the 200m for the Guildford & Godalming athlete, who crossed the line in 28.16 to go inside France’s Mandy Francois-Elie’s previous best of 28.35. 

Husker Spring Invitation, Lincoln, Nebraska, USA, 9 April

Former GB junior international Matti Mortimore (Justin St Clair) made a significant improvement in his lifetime best with a winning throw of 75.79m. That eclipsed the previous best of 72.44m set last year by the 22-year-old Ipswich athlete, who is based at North Dakota State University at Fargo in the US. Shaftesbury Barnet’s

Nicholas Percy (Vesteinn Haftelnsson) won the discus with a PB of 60.49m to claim another early season top spot in the UK rankings. It was a Scottish record for Percy as well.

Miami Hurricane Alumni Invitational, Coral Gables, Florida, USA, 8-9 April

Commonwealth triple jump silver medallist Laura Samuels (Aston Moore) made an encouraging return to action, winning with a second round effort of 13.71 (+0.4). It was the Birchfield Harrier’s first competition since suffering a broken ankle in June last year. The 2015 British indoor champion opened with a jump of 13.42m (+0.2) and closed with 13.69m (+1.0), registering fouls with her other three attempts.

Sun Angel Classic, Tempe, Arizona, USA, 9 April

European Championship 200m silver medallist Jodie Williams (Ryan Freckleton) dipped under 23 seconds in her opening 200m of the year, winning in 22.99 (+0.2). The 22-year-old Herts Phoenix athlete also finished sixth in the 100m, clocking 11.57 (+0.8).

She was not the only British winner, Epsom and Ewell’s Rosie Clarke (David Harmer) winning the 1500m in 4:14.64. Allan Hamilton (John Scott) finished runner up in the long jump with 7.48m (+1.0) while Emily Dudgeon was fourth in the 800m in a time of 2:05.37.

Trofeo Iberico 10,000m track race, Maia, Portugal, 9 April

English cross country champion Lily Partridge (self-coached) finished fourth in the women’s race in 32:34.97. Her Aldershot Farnham and District club-mate Jessica Andrews was fifth in 33:21.53 and Scot Mhairi MacLennan (John Lees) 20th in 34:39.87, both track personal bests.

Surrey Disability Championships & Open, Kingston, 9-10 April 

Claire Harvey (Shelley Holroyd) extended her F55 shot put personal best to 6.87m in her first competition of the season. She also recorded marks of 17.35m in the discus and 13.73m in the javelin.

In the F32 club throw, the weather played a factor in the performances of Thomas Green (Kenneth Green) and Stephen Miller (Ros Miller). The latter threw 23.88m in windy conditions with Green putting down a mark of 23.08m.

Judith Caunter (Bronwin Carter) threw a career best of 14.24m in the F34 discus before a best of 9.64m in the javelin. Maurillia Simpson (Alison O’Riordan) threw a best of 11.71m in the F57 discus in only her second year of competition. Andrew Simpson threw 20.11m.

Great Ireland 10km Run, Dublin, Ireland, 10 April

Andy Maud (self-coached) battled through tough, windy conditions to win in 29.55. The Highgate Harrier finished five seconds clear of Ireland’s Mick Clohisey.

Greater Manchester Marathon, 10 April

Hallamshire Harrier Steve Bayton (Phil Nichol) enjoyed a triumphant marathon debut, clocking the fastest time thus far in 2016 by a Briton, 2:22:34. Brighton and Hove’s Kevin Rojas (Allison Benton) finished runner up in 2:23:03, with Nathan Kilcourse of Salford Harriers was third in 2:25:09.

Stockport Harrier Kelly Crickmore was the first woman home in 2:48:04, with Samantha Amend (Rodger Hughes) second in 2:52:07 and Anne Holland third in 2:52:52
