WEEKEND ROUND-UP - 27-29 MAY 2022

Away from Matthew Hudson-Smith’s UK record in the 400m in Eugene, and the action at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Nottwil, there was lots of athletics going on around the world last weekend. We look back on some of the highlights here.

European 10,000m Cup, Pace, France, 28 May

The Great Britain and Northern Ireland senior women’s team bagged bronze after some superb performances on the continent.

Abbie Donnelly (Rob Lewis) shone brightly as she set a personal best on her way to ninth spot and leading Brit in the race. Her time of 32:20.82, which was just 0.82s outside the European championships qualifying standard, was a big improvement for the Lincoln Wellington athlete who took 26 seconds off her best which she set at the Night of 10,000m PBs a fortnight ago.

Next counter for GB & NI was Hannah Irwin (James Thie, Cambridge and Coleridge), who was competing for the British team for the first time in her career. She was 14th in a time of 32:44.38, just ahead of her compatriot Lauren Heyes (Paul Roden, Hallamshire) who was 15th in 32:49.69. Philippa Bowden (Helen Clitheroe, Aldershot Farnham and District) was next in 22nd in a time of 33:22.05, while Jess Gibbon (Reading) was 23rd in 33:24.86. Steph Twell (Aldershot Farnham and District) did not finish.

In the men’s race, Mahamed Mahamed (Idris Hamud, Southampton) crossed the line in 23rd in 28:38.03, while Tom Anderson (Andrew Hobdell, Bingley) did not finish.

Daniela Jutzeler Memorial, Nottwil, Switzerland, 29 May

There were a couple of personal bests on the final day of action in Nottwil.

Two-time Paralympic medallist Sammi Kinghorn (Rodger Harkins, Red Star) lowered her 100m PB to 16.06 (0.3), taking 0.05s off her previous best.

Elsewhere, Nathan Maguire (Ste Hoskins, Kirkby) again improved his 800m lifetime best as he clocked 1:31.12, taking 0.04s off his best set on Thursday last week, with Richard Chiassaro (Jenni Banks, Harlow) next in 1:36.48.

Racing solo in the T34 400m, Hannah Cockroft (Jenni Banks, Leeds) impressed as she set one of the fastest times of her career with 54.22. Her world record of 53.99 set in Arbon last year is the only time she has gone faster.

She returned for the 100m later in the day, just 0.01s outside the time she set on Saturday at the Grand Prix, 16.62 (0.9). Fabienne Andre (Jenny Archer) was next in the race in 19.24; the Weir Archer Academy athlete also set a time of 2:111.23 in the 800m.

Elsewhere, Mel Woods (Rodger Harkins, Red Star) clocked 56.47 in the T54 400m, while Eden Rainbow-Cooper (Jenny Archer, Weir Archer Academy) went in the T54 800m, crossing the line in 1:55.68.

Also in 400m action was Mo Jomni (Jenny Archer, Weir Archer Academy) with a time of 51.90 in the T53 men’s races, while Marcus Perrineau Daley (Weir Archer Academy) ended his week with 1:07.19 over the distance.

In the 100m, Andrew Small (Rick Hoskins, Stockport) again took the win in the T33 men’s event in a time of 17.35 (2.1), while James Freeman (Jenny Archer, Weir Archer Academy) completed his successful Swiss series with a time of 18.33.

Mickey Bushell (Fred Periac, Birchfield) recorded 16.18 (2.3) in the men’s T53 100m, Perrineau Daley 18.53 (1.2), and Hilmy Shawwal (Jenny Archer, Weir Archer Academy) 16.00 (1.8).

BMC Grand Prix, Manchester, 28 May

Ellie Baker (Jon Bigg, Shaftesbury Barnet) and Ben MacMillan (Michael Wright, Central) were among the winners at the next stop on the BMC Grand Prix calendar.

Baker won the women’s 1500m in 4:11.87 ahead of Hannah Nuttall, while MacMillan ran inside the Scottish Commonwealth Games standard as he won the men’s event in 3:40.60.

Elsewhere, subject to ratification, Ben Sandilands (Steven Doig) set a T20 800m world record of 1:52.55. the Fife athlete trains in the same group as Paralympic champion Owen Miller.

Hypomeeting, Götzis, Austria, 28-29 May 22

Holly Mills (Laura Turner-Alleyne, Andover) and Katarina Johnson-Thompson (Petros Kyprianou, Liverpool) finished sixth and seventh overall in the prestigious meeting on the combined events calendar.

Mills did so with an overall personal best score of 6260 points which was inside the European championship qualifying standard. A personal best of 2:08.07 in the final event, the 800m, took her to the lifetime best points tally after a solid series.

Johnson-Thompson finished her seven events on 6174 points.

IFAM Oordegem, Oordegem, Belgium, 28-29 May

Jessie Knight (Marina Armstrong, WSEH), Alastair Chalmers (Matt Elias, Guernsey) and Seamus Derbyshire (Nick Dakin) excelled in the 400m hurdles in thrilling races in Belgium.

Knight moved to joint fourth on the UK all-time list in the women’s 400m hurdles as she won in a PB of 54.09, while Hayley McLean (Chris Zah, Shaftesbury Barnet) ran a lifetime best and a European Championships qualifying standard of 55.48 in the same race.

Chalmers ran the fastest time by a Briton in the 400m hurdles in nearly five years with a time of 48.88. The time was also inside the World Championships qualifying standard by 0.02 seconds.

Meanwhile, Derbyshire ran the race of his life to clock 49.44 which was a European standard and a big personal best for the City of Stoke athlete and the first time he has run under 50 seconds for the 400m hurdles.

England Athletics Senior & U20 Combined Events Championships, Bedford, 28-29 May

Abigail Pawlett (Trafford) and Eloise Hind (Marcia Marriott, Oxford City) both achieved World U20 qualifying standards after two superb days in the heptathlon. Pawlett achieved a total points score of 5706 points which improved her best by 113 points, while Hind finished with 5448 points which was also a significant improvement for her.

In the senior women’s event, Jade O’Dowda (Newham and Essex Beagles) moved to ninth in the UK all-time lists after a PB points tally of 6224 points, while Harry Kendall (David Hull, Tonbridge) set five PBs on his way to 7843 points in the senior men’s decathlon.

England Athletics reports: Day One and Day Two

 

Poznań Grand Prix, Poznań, Poland, 27 May

Olympic relay medallist Imani Lara-Lansiquot (Stuart McMillan, Sutton & District) improved her 200m career best to 22.93 (1.4). She also ran a wind-assisted 11.15 (2.8) to win the 100m too.

In the 1000m, fresh from winning the 800m at the Muller Birmingham Diamond League, Ben Pattison (Dave Ragan, Basingstoke and MidHants) won and set a PB of 2:19.27 over 1000m.

Meeting Iberoamericano, Huelva, Spain, 25 May

Last Wednesday Holly Bradshaw (Scott Simpson, Blackburn) won the competition with a best clearance of 4.60m, and Molly Caudery (Stuart Caudery) was second, clearing the same height, which was a PB and European standard for the Thames Valley athlete.
