BW-Bank Meeting, Karlsruhe, GER, 31 January

Joice Maduaka (Woodford Green with Essex Ladies V35) ran a season’s best in the 60m and her fastest for three season’s at the age of 36 with a time of 7.32 behind winner Laverne Jones Ferrett (US Virgin Islands) 7.11 (7.09 pb heat). She came back for the 200m and finished a fine second in 23.66.

Cinque Mulini, San Vittore Olona, ITA, 31 January

In the famous ‘Five Mills’ Cross Country race Stephanie Twell (Aldershot, Farnham & District) finished in fourth place behind winner Nancy Langat (Kenya), Tizita Bogale (Ethiopia) and Ana Dulce Felix (Portugal). In the men’s race won by Humegaw Mesfin (Ethiopia), Britain’s Ben Linday (Aldershot, Farnham & District) finished in 10th place.

Combined Events International, Apeldoorn, NED, 30/31 January

In the men’s heptathlon Kevin Sempers (Trafford) finished in fourth place with 5686 points (60m 7.03, LJ 6.95m, Shot 12.92m, HJ 2.03m, 60mh 8.13, PV 4.60m, 1000m 2:48.62). Ed Dunford (Birchfield) 8th with 5510 points (60m 7.08, LJ 6.84m, Shot 14.70m, HJ 1.88m, 60mh 8.21, PV 4.30m, 1000m 2:49.63). Richard Reeks (Crawley) 9th with 5490 points (60m 7.12, LJ 6.72m, Shot 11.73m, HJ 2.03m, 60mh 8.21, PV 4.50m, 1000m 2:47.63). Ben Hazell (Basingstoke Mid Hants) 15th with 5260 points (60m 7.46, LJ 6.54m, Shot 13.53m, HJ 1.85m, 60mh 8.53, PV 4.40m, 1000m 2:40.07).

In the women’s pentathlon Grace Clements (Birchfield) finished in 8th place with 4046 points (60mh 8.77, HJ 1.63m, Shot 12.40m, LJ 5.18m, 800m 2:19.04). Catherine Holdsworth (Colchester) 9th with 3982 points (60mh 8.52, HJ 1.78m, Shot 11.92m, LJ 5.73m, 800m 2:26.39).

London Games, Lee Valley, 30/31 January

Mark Lewis-Francis (Birchfield) ran his fastest 60m since 2004 when winning R1 in 6.59. Other highlights from the meeting were Jordan Huggins (Enfield & Haringey U20) 6.77 in the 60m and David Bolarinwa (Cambridge U17) 7.02 and in the women’s event Bernice Wilson (Birchfield) 7.31 and Fatmaca Bagru (Victoria Park & Tower Hamlets) 7.32. In the 60m hurdles Lawrence Clarke (Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow) clocked 7.72 with Nick Gayle (Shaftesbury Barnet) just behind with 7.79 while Gemma Bennett (Shaftesbury Barnet) stopped the clock at 8.25. David Bolarinwa (Cambridge U17) came back for the 200m and ran 22.44 while Lucy Sargent (Havering Mayesbrook) 24.81 and Desiree Henry (Enfield & Haringey U20) 24.54 were the pick of the females. In the 400m Hayley Jones (Wigan) clocked 55.01 with Tara Bird (Woodford Green with Essex Ladies) recording a useful 55.91 and Victoria Ohuruogu (Newham & Essex Beagles U20) 56.44. Dani Christmas (Crawley) ran 2:08.75 in the 800m and in the same race Perri Shakes-Drayton (Victoria Park & Tower Hamlets) tested her endurance with a 2:15.45 clocking. The high jump produced four athletes with a clearance at 2.20m with Adam Scarr (Enfield & Haringey) taking the victory on count-back from Robert Wolshi (Woodford Green with Essex Ladies),Tom Parsons (Birchfield) and Robbie Grabarz (Newham & Essex Beagles) while in the women’s event Jessica Leach (Birchfield) cleared 1.80m. In the women’s triple jump Nadia Williams (Shaftesbury Barnet) recorded an excellent 13.55m.

Midlands Cross Country Championships, Stafford Common, 30 January

Highlights from the event included wins for James Walsh (Leeds City) in the senior men; Gemma Steele (Charnwood) senior women; Matt Clowes (Staffs Moorland) U20 men; Hayley Munn (Kettering Town) U20 women; Tom Curr (Stroud) U17 men winning by 38 seconds; Annabel Gummow (Bristol & West) U17 women winning by a massive 53 seconds; Harvey Brown (Halesowen) U15 boys; Sophie Coldwell (Charnwood) U15 girls; Dominic Bill (Halesowen) U13 boys; Hannah Nuttall (Charnwood) U13 girls.

Southern Cross Country Championships, Parliament Hill, London, 30 January

Highlights from the event included wins for Nielsen Hall (Bedford & County) in the senior men; Jessica Sparke (Woodford Green with Essex Ladies) senior women; Dan Clorley (Luton) U20 men; Hannah Walker (Dacorum & Tring) U20 women; Richard Goodman (Shaftesbury Barnet) U17 men; Emelia Gorecka (Aldershot, Farnham & District) U17 women; James McMurray (St. Albans) U15 boys; Jessica Judd (Chelmsford) U15 girls; Tom Newham (Isle of Wight) U13 boys; Becca Croft (Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow) U13 girls.

Suzanne Hasler (Puerto de Alicante) won the 800m in 2:09.43.

BU Terrier Invitational, Boston (U) MA, USA, 30 January

David Proctor (Rochdale) finished in place in the 3000m with a time of 8:05.31 while Jonathan Gault (Dartford U20) finished in 20th place in the 5000m with 14:42.63.

Indiana Relays, Bloomington IN, USA, 30 January

Rosie Edwards (Rotherham) finished in sixth place in the 5000m with 18:07.22.

Texas A&M Challenge, College Station TX, USA, 30 January

Charlotte Browning (Aldershot, Farnham & District) won the 800m in 2:05.50 which was a life-time best.

UW Invitational, Seattle WA, USA, 30 January

In round four of the 800m Tim Bayley (Belgrave) finished in third place with 1:49.47.

Indiana Relays, Bloomington IN, USA 29 January

In the men’s mile Lee Emanuel (City of Sheffield) ran a life-time best to take the victory in 3:57.62 with Scott Overall (Blackheath & Bromley) maintaining his recent good form in third place with another life-time best off 3:58.61. In the 3000m Matthew Graham (Kirkintilloch U20) was another to claim a life-time best finishing in fourth place with 8:18.22 with Thomas Boardman (Leigh) just behind in sixth place with 8:18.27 also a life-time best.

Internationales Springermeeting, Dresden, Germany 29 January

Kate Dennison (Sale Harriers Manchester) maintained her recent good form with victory in the pole vault recording 4.50m.

Millrose Games, New York NY, USA 29 January

Andy Baddeley (Harrow) was back in New York for another race over one mile but this time had to settle for third place 3:58.09 behind Bernard Lagat (USA) and Asbel Kiprop with Mark Draper (Bedford & County) down in fifth place with 4:02.30. The star performance though came from Hannah England (Oxford City) who won the women’s mile in 4:31.48 just edging across the line 2/100ths ahead of Sarah Hall (USA) after passing 1500m in 4:14.7. England, coached by Bud Baldaro, a former Florida State University student and USA collegiate 1500m outdoor champion was pleased with her victory around the tight 11-laps at Madison Square Gardens where she took charge of the race in the final two laps and said: “I was able to make the move I hoped to make with only two laps to go and I managed to hold off Sara”. The 22-year-old Oxford City athlete added: “My coach’s friend Jim Harvey, came up with my race plan and I took a chance and it paid off. When I came here I couldn’t believe my eyes at how small the track was. I had flashbacks from 2008 running against Sarah and it wasn’t a surprise to see her in the lead, she’s a great athlete. I could hear her at the last bend and I thought she’d get me”.

In round three of the men’s 3000m Luke Cragg (Mansfield) finished in 12th place in a huge life-time best of 8:05.91.
