British athletes overseas …
Austria
European Mountain Running Championships, Telfes im Stubai, Austria
12 July

The Aviva Great Britain and Northern Ireland team was out in force with four teams sent to the European Mountain Running Championships in Austria and came home with three team bronze medals. In the Senior Women’s event Martina Strähl from Switzerland claimed first place with 54.39. The GB team of Kate Goodhead (Stroud) 8th 58.34, Katie Ingram (Horwich) 9th 58.37, Rebecca Robinson (Kendal) 17th 60.46 and Clare McKittrick (Charnwood) 28th 62.40.

With three to count in the team event GB were third with 34 points. In the Senior Men’s event Ahmet Arslam from Turkey claimed first place with 58.26. The GB team of Orlando Edwards (Shaftesbury Barnet) 19th 62.05, Gareth Raven (Sale Harriers Manchester) 27th 63.42, James Walsh (Leeds City) 30th 64.00 and Adam Osborne (Leeds City) 34th 64.31. The three to count team event saw GB finish in seventh with 76 points.

In the Junior Women’s event Derya Altintas from Turkey claimed first place with 23.15. The GB team of Gina Paletta (Wrexham) 6th 23.45, Victoria Graves (City of York U20) 9th 24.03 and Blue Haywood (Lincoln Wellington U20) 13th 24.41. With only two to count in the team event GB finished in third place with 15 points. In the Junior Men’s event Yusuf Alici from Turkey claimed first place with 50.29. The GB team of Scott McDonald (Central) 5th 53.06, Alexander Hendry (Central) 13th 54.25, Robbie Simpson (Deeside Runners) 14th 54.34 and Ricky Challinor (Liverpool) 42nd 59.14. The three to count team event saw GB finish in third place with 32 points.

France
2nd Trail World Challenge, Serre Chevalier, France
12 July

WHILE the track championships were being held in Italy and at home, the athletes at Serre Chevalier were competing at a distance up to 1000 times longer than the short sprint distance! The event was over 100km (62.5 miles). The mens race saw Andy Rankin (Muddy Mucky Munkeys) finish in seventh place in a time of 7 hours 41 minutes 19 seconds which was a pb and Allen Smalls (Colchester) in 17th place 8:38.22 behind the winner from France, Thomas Lorblanchet 6:38.18. In the women’s race Angela Mudge (Carnethy V35) finished in a fine second place 8:12.29 with Elizabeth Hawker (Road Runners Club) one place behind in third place 8:22.21.

Spain
Salamanca Grand Prix, Spain
8 July

TWO British athletes competed in Salamanca and both recorded pbs. Dwayne Grant (Blackheath & Bromley) finished second in his 100m race with 10.37 (1.3) and Chris Clarke (Marshall Milton Keynes) ran 46.33 in the 400m to finish in fourth place.

English Schools Championships, Don Valley Stadium, Sheffield
10-11 July

MOST of the best athletes still at school in England were competing for their respective counties and not their clubs at Sheffield to contest their own ‘Olympics’ against the best athletes from every county in the country. There were many outstanding performances and championship best performances came from Clovis Asong (Manchester) in the junior boys 400m to go first on the all-time lists. Oliver Bradfield (Norfolk) in the junior boys javelin. Middlesex in the senior boys 4x100m relay. Jessica Judd (Essex) in the junior girls 1500m who won by a massive 14.5 seconds. Georgia Peel (Hampshire) in the intermediate girls 1500m who won by 11 seconds to go third on the all-time lists. Emelia Gorecka (Surrey) in the intermediate girls 3000m who won by nine seconds. Abi Carter (Humberside) in the intermediate girls hammer where the first three broke the previous best performance to go second on the all-time lists. (Louise Webb (Hampshire) in the new senior girls 1500mSC event. Abigail Haywood (West Yorkshire) in the senior girls pole vault. Sophie Hitchon in the senior girls hammer.
