Weekend Round Up

02 March 2009

A comfortable victory for the Aviva Great Britain and Northern Ireland over Dutch opposition, a British junior record for Sally Scott and a huge PB for Mervyn Luckwell were the highlights of a busy weekend overseas for some of the UK’s leading track and field athletes.

JUMPS INTERNATIONAL, APELDOORN, NETHERLANDS
The Aviva GB & NI team defeated the home nation 104 points to 61 with some fine performances across senior, under 23 and under 20 age-groups.

There were individual wins by Emma Lyons (Sale Harriers Manchester) – women’s pole vault (4.20m), Rob Mitchell (Sale Harriers Manchester) – men’s high jump (2.20m), Stephanie Pywell (Sale Harriers Manchester) – women’s high jump (1.80m), Stephanie Aneto (Woodford Green & Essex Ladies) – women’s triple jump (12.78m), Jamie Blundell – men’s long jump (7.43m) and – perhaps most impressively of all – by 17 year old Ben Williams (City of Stoke) – men’s triple jump (15.66m).

PARIS, FRANCE
Javelin thrower Mervyn Luckwell (Marshall Milton Keynes) made an exceptional start to 2009 at the French Winter Long Throws Championships as he extended his PB to 81.05m, adding over five metres to his previous best and become only the ninth Briton ever to exceed 80 metres.

CHEMNITZ, GERMANY
Olympic vaulter Steve Lewis (Newham & Essex) placed third at the 14th Erdgas Indoor Meeting with 5.60m. He failed three times at 5.80m as he courageously attempted to improve on his PB of 5.75m which he set in January.

TOURS, FRANCE
At a small pole vault meeting in France, Sally Scott (Gateshead Harriers) continued her remarkable run of form, improving her own UK junior record to 4.14m. Meanwhile, senior record holder Kate Dennison (Sale Harriers Manchester) made her own attempts to improve on her UK record by 1cm by attempting 4.47m, but on this occasion had to settle for 4.31m.
