Weekend Round Up

On a weekend where the sporting calendar was dominated by the challenge of unfavourable weather conditions, there were still a number of performances of note from Aviva GB & NI athletes.
Samsung Diamond League, New York, June 11
Terrible conditions with wind and rain made for challenging times at the latest Diamond League event. Phillips Idowu (Coach: Aston Moore) had another top class win with 16.67/-1.9 almost a metre down on his season’s best but well clear of his opponents which included World indoor record holder Teddy Tamgho.
Dai Greene (Coach: Malcolm Arnold) finished third in the 400m hurdles in 49.07 but did beat World number one LJ Van Zyl.
Michael Bingham easily won the B race in 45.42 to go top of the McCain Power of Ten rankings.
Shana Cox was fourth in the 400m in 52.42.
Tiffany Ofili-Porter finished third in a top class 100m hurdles in 13.11 with World Heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis seventh in 13.27. Later in the programme Ennis was eighth in the long jump with 6.03m/-3.5 and beat the European long jump champion Ineta Radevica of Latvia.

Istanbul, June 11
Dwain Chambers enjoyed another victory in unfavourable conditions winning the 100m easily in 10.17/-0.4.

BMC Nike Grand Prix, Watford, June 11
With a solo run over the second half of the race, Charlene Thomas (Coach: Aaron Thomas) had a clear win in the 1500m in 4:06.87 to go third in the McCain Power of Ten rankings and take 13 seconds off her season’s best, running inside the World Championships B standard.
The B 1500m was won by Eilish McColgan (Coach: Liz McColgan) who set a PB by seven seconds with the second best Under 23 mark of 4:14.44. Second was junior Georgia Peel (Coach Mick Woods) who went top of the McCain Power of Ten Under 20 ranking with her 4:16.55 setting another European Junior qualifying mark.
In the women’s 5000m Katrina Wooton (Coach: Andrew Hobdell) was second in a season’s best of 15:43.77 to go top of the McCain Power of Ten rankings. Sonia Samuels (George Gandy) with 15:44.24, Lauren Deadman (Bill Foster) with 15:46.34 and Gemma Steel with 15:47.21 went second to fourth in the rankings. Hannah Walker (Bud Baldaro) also went inside 15:50 and like the three ahead also set a PB with 15:48.69 to top the Under 23 rankings and set a European Championships Under 23 qualifying mark. Kate Avery (Robert Ashwood) followed suit with 15:55.54.
In the Women’s 800m there was a big breakthrough For Lindsay Sharp (Coach: David Sunderland) who took two seconds off her PB to beat an international field which included some of the leading Britons Emma Jackson and Marilyn Okoro. Already a winner at Loughborough and BMC at Cardiff, she maintained her 100% record at 800m this year with a 2:02.64 victory. Charlotte Best (Coach: Mark Best) was third in a season’s best of 2:02.73 to go sixth with the higher ranked Jackson (Alan Morris) and Marilyn Okoro (Ayo Falola) finishing outside 2:03.
In the C 800, Katie Snowden (Coach: James McDonald) went top of the Under 20 rankings with a PB 2:05.26. Rowena Cole (Norma Pugh) Went second with her second place in the B race in 2:05.74 while Sarah Kelly (Liz McColgan) went third with her 2:06.26 in sixth, all three times inside the European junior qualifying mark.
In the men’s 1500m, Adam Cotton (John Nuttall) set a PB of 3:41.33 in fourth to go top of the McCain Power of Ten Under 20 1500m rankings while Youth Olympics medallist Charlie Grice (Coach: Jon Bigg) went third in the rankings with his PB 3:42.86 – both times were well inside the European junior standard.
In the 3000m steeplechase third-ranked James Wilkinson (Coach: Philip Townsend) finished second in 8:45.44 to miss his PB by just 0.04 while third placed Andy Vernon (Nick Anderson) went fifth in the rankings with his 8:51.61 PB.
In the Men’s 5000m teenagers John McDonnel and Adam Bitchell (Coach: James Thie) went inside 14 minutes for the first time and set European Under 23 marks, the latter taking well over half a minute off his PB.

NCAA Championships, Des Moines, June 10/11
Rory Fraser was sixth in the 5000m in 13:39.40, just six-hundredths of a second off his PB. Third ranked at 10,000m, Keith Gerrard was close to his best when seventh in 28:38.63.

McCain Power of Ten top-ranked Goldie Sayers (Coach: Dan Pfaff) won the javelin with 60.30m.

In the men’s 200m, Christian Malcolm (Coach: Dan Pfaff) was fifth in 20.57 and went second in the McCain Power of Ten rankings. Andy Baddeley (Andrew Hobdell) was eighth in the Dream Mile in 3:54.29 to go top of the McCain Power of Ten rankings.
In a fast men’s 110m hurdles, McCain Power of Ten top ranked Andy Turner (Lloyd Cowan) was close to his 2011 best of 13.28 with 13.32 which placed him fourth.
Distances were down due to weather conditions in the long jump where Greg Rutherford (Dan Pfaff) was sixth with 7.89m/0.6 just ahead of Chris Tomlinson (Coach: Frank Attoh)) 7.87/1.0 in seventh. Tomlinson went second in the McCain Power of ten rankings behind Rutherford.
In a fast 800m, Jenny Meadows (Trevor Painter) set a season’s outdoor best of 1:59.27 and finished fifth, although her performance was promising having suffered with a virus the week before.
European medallist Perri Shakes-Drayton (Chris Zah) went top of the McCain Power of Ten 400m hurdles rankings with a fine second place in 54.77.

Kassel, Germany, June 8
Jack Green (Coach: Malcolm Arnold) had the best win if his life when he improved his PB to win the 400m hurdles in 49.48 to go second in the McCain Power of Ten 400m hurdle rankings.
Commonweath medallist Kate Dennison (Coach: Scott Simpson) was seventh in the women’s pole vault with 4.30m.

Dwain Chambers finished fourth in a world class 100m in a fast 10.09.
