Many of Britain’s top Olympic prospects were in action this weekend with the highlight being Jessica Ennis’s superb British record in the world’s top multi-event meeting, plus further Olympic A standards in Hengelo and Ostrava.
Gotzis, Hypo Meeting, May 26/27
European and former World champion Jessica Ennis (Coach: Toni Minichello) enjoyed her greatest ever performance when she defeated most of her major rivals as she smashed the British Heptathlon record and her personal best. Her score of 6906 puts her on top of the McCain Power of Ten rankings and is the best score in the world for close on five years and finally sees the demise of former Olympic champion Denise Lewis’s 12 year-old mark of 6831 points.
Ennis started brilliantly with a near personal best 12.81/0.0 hurdles victory for 1153 points. Her high jump was down on her best at 1.85m and she scored 1085 points but she retained her lead. She returned to form with a 14.51m shot for 828 points though lost the lead and 100 points to shot specialist Austra Skujyte. However the Lithuanian could only manage 25.31 for 200m while the Briton was superior by 232 points and smashed her PB with a superb 22.88/1.9 for 1091 points. She was clearly on course for a PB and she led overnight by over 200 points on 4113 points.
Ennis’s time was well inside rhe Olympic A qualifying standard (23.10) in the 200m and puts her top of the McCain Power of Ten rankings in that event.
In the world indoor championships, the long jump was disappointing but Ennis not only jumped a superb 6.51m/0.8 for 1010 points, she actually won the competition and pulled further away from the opposition. Her distance equalled her PB from both 2010 and 2011.
Ennis was only 11th best in the javelin and World champion Tatyana Chernova threw a massive 53.21m but Ennis kept the defecit down to a manageable 100 points as she continued her brilliant form to set a personal best of 47.11m.
Chernova also edged her in the 800m by just six hundredths of a second but the Briton’s 2:09:00 was sufficient for the British record and easy win. The eventual winning margin was 132 points with Chernova’s strong second day giving her 6774 points. Defending Olympic champion Natallia Dobrynska of Ukraine was a modest 9th in 6311 points.

BUPA London 10,000m
World 5000m champion Mo Farah (Coach: Alberto Salazar) won very easily in very hot conditions on a course that will be used as a lap for the Olympic marathon and the race incorporated the British 10,000m championships.
Farah saved his sprint for the last 400m and won in a time of 29:21. Olympic marathon selection Scott Overall (Coach: Robert Chapman) was a close and encouraging third in 29:26.
Another British Olympic marathon selection Mara Yamauchi (Shige Yamauchi) won the women’s race in 32:52. Caryl Mair Jones was a surprise second in a personal best 33:07.

Rabat, May 27
The World’s top ranked long jumper Greg Rutherford produced another top class win with a jump of 8.17/-1.1 European championships bronze medallist Chris Tomlinson went second in the outdoor rankings with his 2012 debut of 8.01m/0.4.
World champion Dai Greene suffered a narrow defeat to former world champion Felix Sanchez. Greene though timed 48.96 to go top of the McCain Power of Ten rankings surpassing Richard Yates’ win of the day before. Jack Green (Malcolm Arnold) went joint third in the rankings with 49.45.
Goldie Sayers (Dan Pfaff) won the javelin with 62.35m. she tops the rankings with 63.04m.
Julia Bleasdale, (Nic Bideau) who has the Olympic 10,000m qualifying time, struggled in the 5000m and was last in 16:00.75 Lynsey Sharp (David Sunderland) set a season’s best of 2:01.12 for fourth in the 800m to go third in the rankings.

Arona, Spain, May 26/27
Daniel Awde (Coach: Greg Richards) finished his decathlon late on Sunday night and moved Ashley Bryant’s performance off the top of the McCain Power of Ten rankings. His score of 8102 moved him to fourth in the all time British rankings as he became just the fourth to better the 8000 points barrier. It was well over the Olympic B standard of 7950 points.
Ben Hazell (Richards) finished second on 7417 points.

European Club Championships – Group A, Vila Real de Santo António, Portugal, May 27 European and Commonwealth champion Andy Turner (Coach: Lloyd Cowan) provided the highlight of the second day, winning the 110m hurdles in a season’s best of 13.41/1.9 to go back to second in the McCain Power of Ten rankings.
Highlight of the first day came from Andrew Robertson (Coach: Sam Robertson) who won the 100m in his fastest ever time of 10.24, but the wind was over the limit as 3.4mps.
Britain’s top ranked junior at 400m, Clovis Asong (Keith Hunter) was fourth in the 400m in 48.01.
City of Manchester finished sixth in the competition and avoided relegation.

European Club Championships – Group B, Dubnica nad Vahom, , Slovakia, May 27
Zoe Derham (Coach: Derek Evely) won the hammer in a season’s best of 67.39 which puts her third in the McCain Power of Ten rankings. Abbi Tyson (Andy Paul) won the 100m in 11.66 and Eden Francis (Glenys Morton) won the discus with 53.48m. British representatives were Birchfield Harriers who in finishing second were rewarded with promotion.

Sopt, Poland, May 27
Kate Dennison (Coach: Scott Simpson) finished second with a vault of 4.40m to equal the Olympic B standard. She has already achieved the A standard of 4.50m.
Hengelo, May 27
World silver medallist Hannah England (Coach: Bud Baldaro) won the 1500m in 4:04.05 to go top of the McCain Power of Ten rankings and better the Olympic A standard of 4:06.00. Also inside that standard with a big PB was 20 year-old Laura Weightman (Steve Cram) who ran 4:04.88 in third to go second in the rankings.
Showing this event could be one of the highlights of the UK Aviva Olympic trials, European cup champion Charlene Thomas (Aaron Thomas) was seventh in 4:07.06 to better the Olympic B standard of 4:08.90.
Commonwealth bronze medallist Stephanie Twell (Mick Woods) was 13th in 4:09.59 to go fourth.
In the 800m, Marilyn Okoro (Coach: Ayo Falola) set a season’s best of 1:59.33 to finish fourth and better the Olympic A standard of 1:59.90, and additionally go top of the McCain power of Ten rankings. Previously top-ranked Emma Jackson (Alan Morris) was sixth in 2:00.42.
In the 200m Anyika Onuora (Christine Bowmaker) went second in the UK rankings to Jessica Ennis in finishing fifth in 23.12/-0.9 and though inside the Olympic B standard of 23.30 but just miss the A standard of 23.10.
In the 110m hurdles, Andy Pozzi (Malcolm Arnold) maintained his consistency with another sub-13.40 to finish second in 13.39.
Ross Murray (Craig Winrow) followed up his big breakthrough at the BMC Manchester meeting with another major step forward in the 1500m. He finished ninth in 3:34.76 to better the Olympic A standard of 3:35.50. Tom Lancashire (Norman Poole) continued on his comeback and his 14th place 3:38.00 equalled the Olympic B standard exactly.
Former world champion Phillips Idowu (Aston Moore) was a class apart in the triple jump and he won by a massive 57cm with 17.31m/1.0 toincrease his lead at the top of the UK rankings. The Olympic A standard is 17.20m. Nathan Douglas was seventh with 16.46/-0.6 to go second in the rankings.
Martyn Rooney (Coach: Nick Dakin) ran his third successive sub-45 400m when he placed second in a time of 44.97, and again well inside the Olympic A standard of 45.30. He tops the McCain Power of Ten rankings of 44.92.

Orlando, May 26
Abi Oyepitan (Coach: Tony Lester) went top of the McCain Power of ten women’s 100m rankings with her 11.21/1.2 victory. It was well inside the Olympic A standard of 11.29 and her fastest time for eight years.

Men’s Decathlon, Gotzis, May 26/27
Ashley Bryant (Ian Grant) finished 12th in the decathlon with 7837 points to beat his PB and go top of the McCain Power of Ten rankings.
The Olympic B standard is 7950 points. He set a PB of 69.26m in the javelin.

Oordegem, Belgium, May 26
James Gladman (Coach: James Hillier) smashed his personal best twice in the Junior 110m hurdles with times of 13.63/1.0 in the heat and then 13.63/-0.6 for second in the final. The IAAF World junior qualifying mark is 13.75 and that puts him top of the McCain Power of ten rankings in that event.
Richard Yates (Stephen Ball) won the 400m hurdles in 49.39, his best for four years to go top of the rankings and that also put him inside the Olympic A standard of 49.50. In second, European silver medallist Rhys Williams (Dan Pfaff) also beat the A standard with his 49.45 to go second in the rankings. Ben Sumner (Ball) had a breakthrough in third with his first-sub 50 and his 49.57 was inside the B standard of 49.80 and puts him third in the rankings.
In the 3000m steeplechase, Luke Gunn (Bud Baldaro) set a season’s best in third of 8:29.22 and miss his PB by less than a second and go top of the UK rankings. His time was inside the Olympic B standard of 8:32.00. Also inside and close behind was Stuart Stokes, who timed 8:29.32 to go second in the rankings.
In the women’s 3000m steeplechase, Eilish McColgan (Liz McColgan) ran her first steeplechase since a bad injury last year and her 9:48.09 puts her second in the rankings but just missed the Olympic B standard of 9:48.00.
Charlie Grice (Coach: Jon Bigg) easily broke his 1500m PB to go top of the Under 20 men’s 1500m rankings with 3:41.16 and that was comfortably inside the IAAF world junior standard of 3:44.00.

Austin, May 26
In his semi final, top of the McCain Power of Ten rankings with an Olympic A standard of 20.45, James Alaka (Clarence Callender) clocked a fast 20.61/1.8. He ran a windy 10.22/3.3 in his heat.

Ostrava, May 26
In a meeting where times were slower across the board – even Usain Bolt only ran 10.04 in his 100m! – Tiffany Porter (Coach: James Henry) provided the British highlight by winning the 100m hurdles in a McCain Power of Ten top ranking equalling 12.65. Porter equalled the meeting record to comfortably defeat Olympic bronze medallist Priscilla Lopes-Schliep and former world indoor champion Lolo Jones.
UK top ranked 800m runner Andrew Osagie (Coach: Craig Winrow) was a fine second in his race in 1:45.24, which was again inside the Olympic A standard of 1:45.60.
1500m hopeful Andrew Baddeley (Andrew Hobdell) smashed his PB in the 3000m to finish third in 7:39.86 and go second in the UK rankings.
In the men’s 110m hurdles, top-ranked Andy Pozzi (Malcolm Arnold) just missed his PB of 13.35 with a fine 13.36 to be a close fourth place. Lawrence Clarke (Arnold) set a PB of 13.42 in fifth to go second in the rankings while World bronze medallist Andy Turner (Lloyd Cowan) was sixth in 13.48, which places him third in the rankings.
All three were inside the Olympic A standard of 13.52.
In the pole vault, Steven Lewis (Dan Pfaff) equalled his outdoor PB and ranking topping and Olympic A qualifying standard of 5.72m and finished third. His indoor PB is 5.77m.
Over 400m, Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu (Cowan) finished a fine second to former world champion Sanya Richards Ross in 51.19, down on her recent ranking topping 50.93 but well inside the Olympic A standard of 51.55 and again one of her best ever runs outside a major championships.
European 400m hurdles medallist Perri Shakes Drayton (Chris Zah) was third in her event in 55.82.

McCain UK Race Walking Challenge- North of England Track Championships & Carnegie Open, 26 May 2012
Leeds University student Bethan Davies (Cardiff AC, Coach Andi Drake) a recent convert to race walking, took just under 2 minutes off her previous best over 5,000m She defied the hot and windy conditions to set a new personal best of 25:33.2 in a superb solo effort. This was considerably quicker than the 27.29 she clocked on the road in her first competitive opening in Sheffield last month.
In the Under 20 3,000 metres, Ellie Dooley (Leeds City AC, Coach Andi Drake) but her ordeal at the IAAF World Race Walking Cup in Saransk behind her in clocking a new personal best of 15.21.1.

BMC Meeting, Eltham, May 23
English Schools 800m champion Sean Molloy (Coach: Mark Hookway) ran inside 1:50 for the first time and his second place in 1:49.93 just missed Mark Sesay’s 23 year-old UK Under 17 record of 1:49.9, and being electrical may have even been a superior performance.
