European Athletics Classic Meeting, Chania, Greece, 9 June

Nick Miller (Tore Gustafsson; Border) was on fine form in Greece as he produced his longest throw since winning the Commonwealth Games title last April, launching the hammer to 77.72m to win by two metres and hit the World Championship and Olympic qualifying standard. Richard Kilty (Benke Blomkvist; Middlesbrough Mandale) was another Brit to score victory as he won the 100m in 10.32 (1.0), whilst Alex Haydock-Wilson (Michael Baker; Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow) was second in the men’s 400m, the youngster running a 46.83 personal best.

IAAF World Challenge Meeting, Hengelo, The Netherlands, 9 June

Eilish McColgan (Liz Nuttall; Dundee Hawkhill) broke the Scottish 5,000m record with an inspired run in Hengelo, the European Championship silver medallist improving on her previous best set in 2017 as she finished fifth in a world class field in 14:47.94.

Kyle Langford (Jon Bigg; Shaftesbury Barnet) produced a 1:45.87 run for second in a high quality 800m field, a huge season’s best and his best performance since the Commonwealth Games last year. Guy Learmonth (Henry Gray; Lasswade) was also in the mix, sixth in 1:47.20. CJ Ujah (Jonas Dodoo; Enfield & Haringey) opened his outdoor season with a 10.13 (0.6) clocking for second place in the men’s 100m, whilst Adam Hague (Trevor Fox; Sheffield & Dearne) cleared 5.41m in the pole vault to finish sixth on countback.

Jen Javelin Festival, Jena, Germany, 8-9 June

Hollie Arnold (David Turner; Blackheath & Bromley) threw her best ever season opener at the Jen Javelin Festival, her 41.94m effort in round one proving to be the best of her series. Training partner Rebekah Walton (Turner; Blackheath & Bromley) won that particular javelin competition – one of two senior women’s events – with a best of 51.35m.

In the men’s event, Harry Hughes (Mark Roberson; Suffolk) – who recently threw over 80 metres for the first time in his career – threw a best of 77.89 metres in the competition won by Germany’s Olympic champion, Thomas Rohler.

Portland Track Festival, Oregon, USA, 8-9 June

British athletes filled three of the top four spots in the 800m, led by 1500m men Josh Kerr (Danny Mackey; Edinburgh AC) and Charles Da’Vall Grice (Jon Bigg; Brighton Phoenix), with Kerr setting a 1:46.06 personal best and Grice posting 1:46.47, his best time for three years.

Two places further back came Neil Gourley (Mark Rowland; Giffnock North), who crossed the line in 1:47.11, just a fraction outside his lifetime best. In the 1500m Oregon University student James West (George Gandy; Tonbridge) ran 3:37.22 for third, a season’s best by some five seconds.

Internationales Pfingstsportfest, Rehlingen, Germany, 9 June

Emily Diamond (Benke Blomkvist; Bristol & West) kick-started her outdoor season with an impressive second place finish over 400m in Germany, her 52.58 time the fastest outdoors by a Brit this year. In the men’s 800m Andrew Osagie (Mark Rowland; Harlow AC) finished in fifth place with a 1:46.86 performance, putting him third on the UK rankings. In the 100m Oliver Bromby (Southampton AC) won the B race in 10.24 (1.1), backing his 10.22 (1.5) run from midweek.

UK Women’s League Premier Division, Leigh, 9 June

It was all about the hurdles at the UK Women’s League, the standout performance coming from Jessie Knight (Marina Armstrong; WSEH) as she continues her switch from 400m to 400mH. Winning by a full two seconds, the WSEH athlete stopped the clock in 56.67 to knock over a second off her previous best. In the sprint hurdles Alicia Barrett (Toni Minichiello; Chesterfield) took the win in a close fought encounter with Heather Paton (Andy Paul; Birchfield) the duo running 13.27 (1.9) and 13.34 respectively.

Racers Grand Prix, Kingston, Jamaica, 8 June

Zharnel Hughes (Glen Mills; Shaftesbury Barnet) underlined his class as he went inside 10 seconds to win the 100m at the infamous Racers Grand Prix in Jamaica, the European Champion clocking 9.97 (0.9) to get the better of the likes of Yohan Blake and Kemar Bailey-Cole. In the 200m events Delano Williams (Enfield & Haringey) ran 20.79 (-0.7) for fourth in the men’s race, a position Jodie Williams (Stuart McMillan; Herts Phoenix) equalled in the women’s race with a 23.03 (0.2) effort. In the sprint hurdles Cindy Ofili (Jeff Porter; Woodford Green Essex Ladies) set a season’s best of 13.06 (0.2) good for fifth.

XXXIII Gran Premio Cantones De La Coruna, La Coruna, Spain, 8 June

Tom Bosworth (Andi Drake; Tonbridge) backed up his team silver and individual fourth place finish at the European Race Walking Cup with an 81:23 showing in Spain on Saturday. His performance was good enough for 25th position overall, with Japan’s Toshikazu Yamanishi taking the win in 77:41.

Golden Roof Challenge, Innsbruck, Austria, 8 June

Charlie Myers (Chris Boundy; Middlesbrough Mandale) set another season’s best of 5.51m in Austria in the pole vault, extending his lead at the top of the UK rankings by a further centimetre. Feron Sayers (Aston Moore; Birchfield Harriers) was also in good form as he leapt out to 7.92m, moving him up to second on the British rankings.

 

Gouden Spike, Leiden, Netherlands, 8 June

Young distance runners Jake Smith (James Thie; Cardiff) and Petros Surafel (Mick Woods; Thames Valley) both went inside the European U23 10,000m qualifying mark over in the Netherlands as they posted personal best times of 29:15.08 and 29:22.55 respectively. Dropping down the distances substantially there was also a season’s best of 23.39 for Finette Agyapong (Coral Nourrice; Newham & Essex Beagles) as she won the women’s 200m.

Schulek Ágoston Emlékverseny, Budapest, Hungary, 7-8 June

In the 110m hurdles Cameron Fillery (Michael Baker; Woodford Green Essex Ladies) continued his fine progress this year, as he improved his personal best to 13.72 (1.9) in winning his heat before lowering it even further as he won the final in 13.68 (1.6), an impressive double. In the flat sprint Dom Ashwell (Marvin Rowe; Shaftesbury Barnet) was another to continue his progress this year as he won in 10.27 (0.3) just outside the personal best he set midweek.

Orion Harriers Fast Friday (inc. England Athletics 10,000m Championships), Walthamstow, 7 June

Adam Hickey (Eamonn Martin; Southend) stuck England Athletics 10,000m gold on Friday night in Essex, the Southend athlete setting a fine 29.08 personal best to get the better of Jack Gray (Mark Vile; Cambridge & Coleridge) and Ollie Lockley (Leeds City), the runner-up also setting a 29.12 personal best, with Lockley also going inside 29.30. Hickey will now turn his focus to the European Cup 10,000m where he will earn his first Great Britain vest on the track.

In the women’s race Nicole Taylor (Richard Owen; Tonbridge) was victorious thanks to a 33:31 run that put her 45 seconds up on the minor medallists Tracy Barlow (Tom Craggs; Thames Valley) and Naomi Taschimowitz (Charlotte Fisher; Shaftesbury Barnet) who set personal bests of 34:15 and 34:17 respectively.

NCAA Div I Championships, Austin, USA, 5-8 June

Long jumper Jacob Fincham-Dukes (Zivile Pukstiene; Leeds City) was perhaps the best British performer at the NCAA Championships, as he finished fifth in the men’s long jump final with a mark of exactly 8.00m (2.0), just 12cm shy of a medal but another legal lifetime best.

Also bagging fifth place finishes were William Paulson (Christopher Frapwell; Stroud) with a 3:42.32 run in the men’s 1500m final and Lucy Bryan (Alan Richardson; Bristol & West) who cleared 4.35m in the women’s pole vault.

Sticking with the field, Ade Mason (Shaftesbury Barnet) was ninth in the triple jump final producing a promising 16.38m (1.2) jump, whilst Roy Ejiakwuekwu (Sale Harriers Manchester) produced a season’s best of 10.24 (1.3) in the 100m.
