Weekend Update

All eyes are on the British athletes competing for their Home Countries in the Commonwealth Games where the athletics starts tomorrow but there was some domestic action of note.

Baxters Loch Ness Marathon, October 3

In his first completed marathon of 2010, Tomas Abyu defeated Kenyan Joseph Mbitwu by five minutes to win in 2:20.50 which places him 12th in the Power of 10 rankings.

Northern Road Relays, Wythenshawe Park, Manchester, October 2

Derby won the men’s event by 15 seconds but it was Jonny Mellor (Coach: David Evans) of Liverpool who ran the fastest leg of 16:22. Mellor, who finished in the top seven at both the English Athletics Senior Championships and Aviva European Trials and UK Championships over 1500m, also won the following day’s Liverpool 10K in 30:00.  

Chester le Street won the women’s race by around two-and-a-half minutes. Lauren Howarth (Coach: Bud Baldaro) of Leigh, who ran for Aviva GB & NI in the World Junior Championships over 3000m in 2008, ran the fastest leg of 16:31.

Spartathlon, Athens, September 26

The classic ultra race over 246km from Athens to Sparta was won by the exciting relative newcomer to Ultra running Emily Gelder by two hours. The Dulwich Runner timed 30 hours 17 minutes 3 seconds. Fellow British athlete Heather Foundling Hawker finished third in 32:43.24.
