Weekend Update

With four weeks to go until the McCain UK Cross Challenge Final and World Cross Country Trials, Mick Woods-coached duo Charlotte Purdue and Stephanie Twell showed they were in outstanding form with victories in the BUCS Cross Country Championships and Gran Premio de Campo a Traves respectively.
Meanwhile, with only one week to go until the Aviva Indoor UK Trials and Championships, there were numerous noteworthy performances at indoor meets for UK athletes domestically and overseas.
Caceras, February 6
Stephanie Twell (coach: Mick Woods) won the Gran Premio Cáceres de Campo a Través just two days after returning from a one month UKA/London Marathon altitude training camp in Iten, Kenya. She clocked 21:24 in the 7.3km race to beat European 1500m Champion Nuria Fernandez who timed 21:32 and Ethiopian Firehiwot Goshu who ran 21:34.
Granollers, February 6
European and Commonwealth Games marathon representative Holly Rush (coach: Martin Rush) went third on the McCain Power of Ten rankings at half-marathon with a third place in 75:40.

San Vittore, Italy, February 6
The European Club Championships were held in the famous Cinque Mulini race.
Charnwood represented the women and Gemma Steel (coach: Roy Stowell) was the leading Briton in sixth place in a time of 20:57. The men were represented by Aldershot, Farnham and District and were led home by Ben Moreau (coach: Nick Anderson) in 22nd. Neither British team made the top six.
Moscow, February 6
Richard Buck (coach: Kevin Tyler) went top of the McCain POT 400m rankings when he was second in the 400m in 47.00.

Dewsbury 10km, February 6
Alyson Dixon (coach: Liz McColgan) went top of the McCain POT women’s 10km rankings when she won in a personal best time of 33:28.

Chichester 10km, February 6
In windy conditions, Olympic marathoner Liz Yelling went second in the McCain POT rankings to Alyson Dixon with a win in 34:05, despite having trained well over 100 miles in the week while Ben Noad went second in the men’s rankings with a win in 30:05.

New Balance Games, Bostonk, February 5
Double European champion Mo Farah came within a second of his British record at 3000m when he finished a very close second to Ethiopian Dejen Gebremeskal. Farah timed 7:35.81, 0.44 of a second behind the winner to go top of the McCain POT rankings and finished well clear of the rest of the field. Lee Emanuel went second in the rankings with a time of 7:56.62 in finishing in 9th place.

Stuttgart, February 5
Andy Turner (coach: Lloyd Cowan) finished second in his heat to Olympic champion Dayron Robles in 7.63 and then matched that time and position in the final where he finished second to current world number one David Oliver as Robles was disqualified.
Both Mark Lewis Francis (coach: Linford Christie) and Craig Pickering (coach: Michael Khmel) clocked times of 6.66 over 60m. Lewis Francis equalled his winning time from the Aviva International last week in winning his heat but in the final he only ran 6.70 for sixth place with Pickering finishing fourth with 6.66 after a 6.70 heat; that put him a hundredth of a second ahead of France’s double European champion Christophe Lemaitre who split the two Brits in the final.
Charlene Thomas (Coach: Aaron Thomas) went second in the 3000m lists with a time of 9:03.34 when she finished fifth in the 3000m.

Birmingham Games, February 5/6
Full results weren’t available for day one but world indoor champion Dwain Chambers pulled out of the 60m final after a 6.83 heat and 6.72 semi final. The final was won by improving Joel Fearon (coach: Michael Khmel) in a McCain POT top ranking performance and PB of 6.62 from Harry Aikines Ayreetey (also Khmel) who timed 6.68.
In the Women’s 60m, Bernice Wilson (coach: George Skafidas) won in 7.26, equalling her best but also going past the joint leaders in the POT rankings, Jeanette Kwayke and Jodie Williams (coach: Mike McFarlane) who had timed 7.28. Laura Turner (coach: Linford Christie) was second in 7.33 which puts her fourth. Marilyn Okoro (coach: Ayo Falola) showed good speed for a 800m runner to win the 400 in 53.61 to go top of the McCain POT rankings while 400m hurdler Jack Green (coach: Malcolm Arnold) went second to Buck with 47.04.
On Sunday in the 60mH Gianni Frankis (coach: Tony Jarrett) went third in the POT rankings with a PB 7.75.
400m specialist Nigel Levine (coach: Simon Duberley) won the 200m in a PB 21.20 though both Richard Strachan (coach: Linford Christie) with a massive PB of 21.02 and Danny Talbot (coach: Daniel Cossins) with 21.07 went quicker in the heats but withdrew from the final as the three went top three in the McCain POT rankings. Strachan also ran a 21.08 heat.
In the women’s 200m, Joey Duck (coach: Mike McFarlane) set an indoor best of 23.95 in her heat which she improved to 23.87 in the semi finals to go top of the McCain POT rankings. Emily Diamond (coach: Jared Deacon) ran 23.92 in her heat to go second but failed to finish her semi final while Duck failed to show for the final.

British Students Cross Country Championships, Birmingham, February 5
There was a big win for European Under-20 champion Charlotte Purdue (coach: Mick Woods) who won by almost a minute from Steve Stockton (coach: George Gandy) while Nick Goolab (coach: Steve Sharp) won the men’s race after a battle in the final stages with Ross Murray (coach: Craig Winrow).
