WEEKEND UPDATE 11-13 FEBRUARY

David Hemery Valentine Invitational, Boston, USA, 11-12 February

Marc Scott (coach: Jerry Schumacher, club: Richmond and Zetland) moved to second on the UK all-time list over 5000m, and also lowered his own European Indoor record by over 11 seconds after a superb run in America.

Scott set the time of 12:57.08 for third overall in the race. It was also well inside the qualifying standard for this summer’s World Championships in Eugene.

In the same race, Sam Atkin (Mike Collins) also flew up the all-time list with a time of 13:03.64 which was inside Scott’s previous European indoor record. The time moved the Lincoln Wellington athlete up to fourth in the UK all-time list.

Elsewhere, Neil Gourley (Ben Thomas) moved to the top of the 2022 world rankings with a time of 3:35.32 over 1500m. It was a big PB for the Giffnock North athlete who has been in strong form this winter. The Scottish athlete won the race with Charlie Da’Vall Grice (Brighton Phoenix) third in a season best of 3:38.00 – both athletes inside the qualifying standard for next month’s world indoors.

Meanwhile, Jenny Nesbitt (Chris Jones, Cardiff) set a PB in the women’s 5000m, recording a time of 15:19.22 – the third best ever indoors by a British woman.

England Athletics Age Group Indoor Championships, Sheffield, 12-13 February

Among the winners over the weekend in Sheffield was European U20 medallist Joy Eze (Gateshead) who sealed the U20 women’s 60m crown after a photo-finish with Nia Wedderburn-Goodison (Andre Williams, Harrow). They both clocked 7.36 – a PB for Eze – while Hilary Gode (Leeds City) took the bronze in a PB of 7.42.

On day two, Mia McIntosh (Jake Awe, Dacorum) took the gold in the women’s U20 60m hurdles setting a time of 8.22 which is the quickest ever by a British 17-year-old.

While in the men’s U17 hurdles final, Jaiden Dean (Brian Hopkins, City of Norwich) continued his excellent 2022 form to break the UK age best with a time 7.76, while Noah Hanson won silver in a lifetime best of 7.84 (Carl Graham, Newham and Essex Beagles)

Elsewhere, Ella Rush (David Feeney, Amber Valley and Erewash) added 17cm to her lifetime best to win the U20 women’s long jump competition.

Winter Throws Invitation, Woodford, 13 February

With a throw of 69.72m, Katie Head (Paul Head) moved to second on the UK all-time list in the women’s hammer. Head now sits behind 2016 Olympic medallist Sophie Hitchon in the list.

It was a big improvement by the Newham and Essex Beagles athlete whose previous best was 65.39 which she threw in Hendon last year.

World Indoor Tour Bronze, Dortmund, Germany, 11 February

On the boards in Germany, George Mills (Jon Bigg, Brighton Phoenix) went 0.04s inside the world indoors qualifying standard for the men’s 1500m after posting a time of 3:38.96 for seventh place.

Badgers Windy City Invite, Chicago, USA, 11-12 February

James West (Ben Thomas, Tonbridge) and Scott Beattie (Mike Bateman, Morpeth) joined a growing list of athletes to achieve the world indoor qualifying standard over 3000m in Chicago.

West, who won the race, clocked a season best time of 7:44.73, while Beattie produced a lifetime best of 7:49.35 to dip inside the 7:50 mark for Belgrade.

Lilac Grand Prix, Spokane, USA, 11 February

There was a race victory for Josh Kerr (Danny Mackey, Edinburgh) as he clocked a time of 1:46.64, incidentally inside the world indoor qualifying standard.

Elsewhere, Olympic finalist Jake Heyward (Mark Rowland, Cardiff) raced over 3000m and won his race in a PB of 7:48.83, also inside a Belgrade standard.
