Weekend Update

8 March 2011

The weekend was an extremely busy one from a British perspective with the Aviva Great Britain and Northern Ireland team winning eight medals at the European Indoor Championships in Paris.

The domestic cross-country season reached a climax at the McCain UK Cross Challenge Final and World Trials at Birmingham’s Cofton Park.

British juniors were also in action, at the Aviva U20/U23 Combined Events International between Great Britain, France and England at the EIS in Sheffield.

Bath Half Marathon, 6 March

There was a surprise in the women’s race behind winner Edith Chelimo with Alyson Dixon (Coach: Liz McColgan) smashing her personal best in finishing second in 72:31 and defeating National cross-country champion Louise Damen who ran 72:43. Lucy MacAlister finished fourth, like Dixon taking a minute off her best with 73:42. Those three performances go top of the McCain Power of 10 rankings.

The leading British male, Robbie Bugden, who was sixth, went fourth in the Po10 rankings with 65:16 in his debut half-marathon.

Alex Wilson Invitation, South Bend, USA, 5 March

Former AAA Under 20 and Under 17 1500m champion Kris Gauson (self-coached) broke four minutes in the Mile for the first time to finish third in 3:59.74 and go third in the Po10 rankings.

Kent Championships, Lee Valley, 5 March

Scott Rider (Coach: John Hillier) went top of the Po10 rankings in the shot with a put of 18.38.

IAAF World Challenge Meeting, Melbourne, 3 March

Jemma Simpson made a great start to her 2011 season when she won the 1500m by half a second in a time of 4:08.49. That places her fourth in the Po10 rankings but is the fastest outdoor time this year.
