The vast majority of Britain’s top endurance athletes competed in Edinburgh, but thousands of British runners of all ages competed in the County Cross Country Championships which took place all over England at various venues and there were some good international results on the track.

Eighteen year-old Katie Byres (coach: Julien Raffalli), who was fourth in last year’s European Junior Championships, had a big breakthrough to smash her pole vault best with a leap of 4.36m – a UK indoor junior record – to win the competition. It far exceeded her previous indoor best of 4.16m indoors and 4.20m outdoors. The UKA Olympic standard is 4.40m and the A standard 4.50m.
She first cleared 4.19m and 4.28m before her record 4.36m all at the first attempt before exiting the competition with three attempts at the Olympic A standard of 4.52m.
Andrew Sutcliffe (Raffalli), the World Junior bronze medallist who had a lengthy period out injured last year, cleared 5.22m in the men’s competition to place second.
NSW Combined Events Championships, Blacktown, January 7/8
Commonwealth bronze medallist Martin Brockman (Chris Bowman) won the Decathlon with a score of 7493 points. He scored personal bests in the 100m of 11.18, 400m of 49.47, shot in 14.29m and Javelin in 57.69m.

County Championships, January 7/8
Impressive winners included World Youth steeplechase finalist Zac Seddon (Jeff Seddon) who won the Berkshire senior title at Newbury 17 by a minute and Olympic triathlon hopefuls Alistair Brownlee and Jonathan Brownlee who dominated the Yorkshire event with a one-two at Wakefield. Georgie Bruinvels (Mick Woods) won the Surrey women’s title by a minute and a half at Dorking.
