WEEKEND UPDATE - 18-20 FEBRUARY

Muller Indoor Grand Prix Birmingham, 19 February

There were several standout performances from British athletes in Birmingham including Kelly Hodgkinson’s (Trevor Painter, Leigh) British indoor record in the women’s 800 (1:57.20) and Ed Fauld’s (James Wright, Rugby and Northampton) European indoor U20 record (46.16) in the men’s 400m.

A number of athletes also clocked world indoor qualifiers including European indoor 3000m champion Amy-Eloise Markovc (Chris Fox, Wakefield) and Erin Wallace (Andy Young, Giffnock North) in the women’s 1500m, Charlie Dobson (Benke Blomkvist, Colchester) in the men’s 60m, and Guy Learmonth (Lasswade) in the men’s 800m.

Elsewhere, there were British records for Zac Shaw (Leon Baptiste, Cleethorpes) and Thomas Young (Joe McDonnell, Charnwood) in the men’s para 60m, with Shaw bringing his best time down to 7.01 (T12 British record) and Young lowering his to 7.03 (T38 men). Sophie Hahn (Leon Baptiste, Charnwood) won the women’s 60m race in 8.11.

RAK Half Marathon, UAE, 19 February

Eilish McColgan (Liz Nuttall, Dundee Hawkhill) broke her mum’s (Liz Nuttall’s) long-standing UK record in the women’s half marathon, clocking 66:26 to improve the previous best which stood at 67:11.

The Scottish athlete competed in the 5000m and 10,000m in Tokyo, and continues her rise over the longer distances, clocking this stand out time in only her second ever half marathon. She ran 67:48 at the Great North Run last September and shattered that time in the United Arab Emirates to tear up the history books.

Sevilla Marathon, 20 February

Jess Piasecki (Robert Hawkins, Stockport) ran the second fastest marathon time by a British female athlete ever, setting a time of 2:22.27. Only Paula Radcliffe has run faster with a time of 2:15.25, while she moves ahead of Mara Yamauchi and Charlotte Purdue in the all-time standings.

Elsewhere, Rose Harvey (Philip Kissi, Clapham Chasers) moved to tenth in the UK all-time list with a time of 2:27.17 which is inside the World and European Championship qualifying standards.

In the men’s race, Josh Griffiths (Swansea) went inside the World Championship qualifying standard by just six seconds, clocking a big PB of 2:11.24.

Mohamud Aadun (Paul Oppe, Thames Valley) and Andrew Davies (Steve Vernon, Stockport) also ran inside the European Championship qualifying standard with times of 2:12.34 and 2:14.23 respectively.

In the wheelchair marathon Jade Hall (Ian Thompson, New Marske) pushed to a time of 1:43.40 in her first marathon since 2019, strengthening her credentials for the Commonwealth Games in the summer.

BUCS Indoor Championships, Sheffield, 18-20 February

Loughborough Students’ Joe Chadwick (Joe McDonnell) pipped Sheffield Hallam’s Joe Ferguson (Lewis Samuel) to BUCS 60m gold as he won in a PB of 6.68 to Ferguson’s 6.70. Cardiff Mets’ Hannah Brier (Matt Elias) took the women’s title in 7.37.

Thomas Young (Joe McDonnell, Loughborough Students) and Simran Kaur (Nick Harris, Nottingham) won the para races.

Silverston Invitational, Ann Arbor, Michigan, 18 February

Josh Zeller (Adrian Brown, Bracknell) recorded two personal bests in the 60m hurdles which were inside the world indoor qualifying standard.

In the heats, he won comfortably in a best of 7.70 before returning for the final to stop the clock at 7.68, also sealing the race victory.
