Weekend Update

Vienna Indoor Classic, Austria, January 28

Guy Learmonth (coach: George Gandy) followed up his world leading performance over 600m at the Sainsbury’s Glasgow International Match by winning the 800m in another world leading time of 1.47.80.

JJ Jegede (Peter Stanley) extended his lead at the top of the Power of 10 thanks to a 7.98 winning jump, whilst Sophie McKinna and Rachel Wallader (both Geoff Capes) went one-two on the night, and one-two in the women’s shot put rankings thanks to 16.25 and 16.02 performances respectively. Melissa Courtney (Mark Pauley) also put in a Power of 10 topping performance in the women’s 1500m, where she ran 4.15.07 to take fourth.

PSD Bank Meeting, Dusseldorf, Germany, January 30

Guy Learmonth’s world 800m lead lasted just two days, as Andrew Osagie (Craig Winrow) took second in quality race, running an indoor personal best of 1.46.48, also an IAAF World Indoor Championship qualifier.

Charlie Grice (Jon Bigg) also recorded an indoor personal best and IAAF World Indoor qualifying standard of 3.40.97 when finishing seventh in a world class 1500m field.

Gulgl Games, Linz, Austria, January 30

David Omergie (Mike Guest) finished second in the 60mH to extend his lead atop of the under-20 Power of 10 rankings. His 7.84 run is the third fastest ever by a British junior.

Internationales Springermeeting, Dresden, Germany, February 31

Holly Bleasdale (Scott Simpson) took pole vault victory in Germany thanks to a vault off, where she cleared a season’s best 4.71m to increase her lead at the top of the Power of 10. In the same competition Sally Peake (Simpson) finished fifth with a 4.32m vault, good for second on the Power of 10.

British Universities Cross Country Championships, Stirling, February 1

Georgia Taylor-Brown (Paul Roden) inflicted a rare defeat on European Junior cross country champion Emelia Gorecka (Mick Woods) to take the senior women’s title by just two seconds, with Rhona Auckland (Joyce Hogg) taking bronze 30 seconds back.

In the men’s race, South of England cross country champion Richard Goodman recorded a dominant victory over his long-time rival Jonny Hay (both Woods), with Jonathan Davies (Rob McKim) taking bronze.

In the team battles, St Mary’s University College came out victorious in the men’s race, with The University of Birmingham taking the honours in the women’s race.

Vault Cardiff, Cardiff, February 1

2013 GB & NI junior representative Dan Gardener (Alan Richardson) broke his personal best for the third time already in 2014 thanks to a vault of 5.35m, which puts him top of the under-23 rankings.

There was also a season’s best for World Youth champion Harry Coppell (John Mitchell) who cleared 5.15m.

Hustopecske Skakani, Czech Republic, February 1

Robbie Grabarz and Isobel Pooley (both Fuzz Ahmed) both moved second on the Power of 10 rankings courtesy of 2.25 and 1.85 jumps respectively.

European Clubs Cross Country Championships, Albufeira, February 2

Representing GB & NI, Aldershot, Farnham & District finished fifth in the women’s race and ninth in the men’s race at a strong European Championships. Led home by Steph Twell in seventh and Lily Partridge (both Woods) in ninth the women’s team were just 10 points shy of a medal. Tom Wade (Geoff Watkin) was first scorer from the men in 30th position.

Alsager 5, Alsgager, February 2

Tom Farrell (Dave Smith) returned from four week spell at the British Athletics altitude camp in Kenya to take a convincing victory over Jonny Taylor (Gordon Surtees) thanks to a 24.06 clocking. Helen Clitheroe (Terrance Mahon) won the women’s race in a time of 26.51, 18 seconds ahead of GB & NI cross country international Katie Brough (Andy Carter).

Dewsbury 10k, Dewsbury, February 2

The 2014 edition of the Dewsbury 10k turned out to be a test of speed, as the first four finishers were separated by just one second. Altrincham’s Mohammed Abu-Rezeq snatched victory in 30.24 ahead of recently crowned North of England cross country champion Dan Garbutt (Aaron Thomas).
