Weekend Update

2 June 2014

Gotzis, May 31/June 1

Katarina Johnson-Thompson (coach: Mike Holmes) pulled off a sensational victory to score a world leading score of 6689 points. That added 200 points to her previous best score and puts her third on the UK all-time lists behind Olympic champions Jess Ennis and Denise Lewis.

It was a hard fought victory and only won on the final event.

She started well with a 13.44/-0.5 PB in the hurdles though that only placed her seventh and she then moved into contention with a top class 1.90m high jump and that put her in second place.

She lost ground with her weakest event, the shot, where her 12.17m throw was only the 32nd best of the 33 competitors and she dropped to sixth place. In the final event of day one, she responded magnificently with a 22.89/1.5 200m which took close to half a second off her PB and was an European Championships qualifier in that event and moved her to second in the Power of Ten 200m rankings!

Overnight she was lying in second place, 15 points behind the Canadian Brianne Theisen Eaton.

She achieved another European Championships event standard in the long jump as she was the best jumnper on the day with a 6.70m/0.1 leap and that have her a 21 point lead with two events remaining.

Her superb form continued in the javelin as she set a lifetime best of 41.44m, though that was only the 17th best throw and she dropped to third after six events as her 5690 trailed Nafissatou Thiam of Belgium’s 5725 and Eaton’s 5695.

The Briton was the best 800m runner there though and her 2:08.16 win ensured a 6682 total and a 41 point victory over Eaton as Thiam faded badly to fifth.

Johnson-Thompson wasn’t the only British performance of note though as Morgan Lake (Eldon Lake) continued her relentless progress and the 17 year-old went third in the world Junior lists for 2014 with a big PB score of 6081 points.

She started solidly with a 14.32/0.2 hurdles and then moved up with a 1.87m high jump. Her best result of the weekend though was the shot. She annilihated her 13.38m PB with a sensational 14.85m, which puts her top of the Under-20 Power of Ten rankings. It also actually moved her up to fifth in the standards and temporarily ahead of Johnson-Thompson.

She carried on the excellent form to finish day one with a near half second PB in the 200m with 24.59/1.4.

Her second day was solid though she did drop back in the standings as she achieved a 6.03/0.0 long jump, a 39.74m PB in the javelin and a near PB of 2:22.98 in the 800m.

Ashley Bryant (Ian Grant) also had a sensational performance in the men’s decathlon as he went third in the UK all time lists behind Daley Thompson and Dean Macey with a PB score of 8141 points in eighth place to easily better the European Championships standard of 8050 points.

His marks were 11.09/-0.2 in the 100m, 7.52/0.7 in the long jump, 13.77m in the shot, 1.94 in the high jump, 49.10 in the 400m, 14.38/0.9 in the hurdles, 43.31m in the discus, 4.56m in the pole vault, an excellent 69.65m in the javelin and 4:33.83 in the 1500m.

John Lane (Antonio Minichiello had an excellent first day and was eighth overnight on 4144 points and ahead of Bryant but fared less well on day two and ended up 12th with 7846 points.
