Weekend Update

The domestic cross country season got underway in earnest this weekend, with league races all around the country.

ATW Met League, Claybury, 11 October

Norwegian Audun Nordtveit took victory in the men’s race, but there was an impressive run by Michael Callegari (coach: Nadeem Shaikh) in third. Rachel Felton (Christopher Frapwell) upset her younger counterparts in the women’s race, beating Melissa Courtney (Mark Pauley) into second with a returning Naomi Taschimowitz (Charlotte Fisher) third.

Apex Sports Chiltern League, Watford, 11 October

Alex Tovey (Conrad Milton) got the better of John McDonnell (John Stoker) in a great race at Watford, with Ian Kimpton (Tony Simmons) third. The in-from Maryse Haynes (Bud Baldaro) won the women’s race rather more easily.

Hampshire League, Winchester, 11 October

There were convincing victories for Lily Partridge and Ian Bailey (both Mick Woods) as they ramp up there preparations for the Liverpool Cross Challenge.

Kent League, Swanley, 11 October

Running in the senior race for the first time, siblings Bobby and Alex Clay (both Peter Mullervy) went 1-2, whilst in the men’s race there was victory for GB & NI mountain running international Max Nicholls (Peter Brenchley) of Tonbridge.

Manchester Area League, Woodbank Park, 11 October

Fresh from team silver at the World Mountain Running Championships, Sarah Tunstall took victory by over two and a half minutes in the women’s race. The men’s race was a much closer affair, with GB & NI international Charlie Hulson (Paul Roden) taking victory by just two seconds.

Start Fitness North East Harrier League, East Cramlington, 11 October

Jonathan Taylor (Gordon Surtees) looked in good from as he ran away from a field of over 500 to take an easy victory. In the women’s race, Rosie Smith (Bryan Mackay) also looked strong, holding off GB & NI marathon runner Alyson Dixon by almost 45 seconds.

4 Miles of Groningen, Netherlands, 12 October

On the roads, Jonny Mellor (Steve Vernon) led home a British trio of himself, European 10,000m silver medallist Andy Vernon (Nic Bideau) and Ross Millington (Vernon) in 18.13, good for tenth place. Vernon was eleventh five seconds back, with Stockport Harrier Millington a further place behind in 18.30. In the women’s race, Helen Clitheroe was first Brit running 20.36, a V40 world best, with Elle Vernon (Vernon) clocking 21.11.
