Brazilian School Games, Sao Paulo

Last week, a number of the most promising GB & NI stars made the 6,000 mile trip to Sao Paulo for the Brazilian School Games.

With the Rio Paralympic Games just 18 months away, it is clear that there is a long line of talented para-athletes coming through the Parallel Success Academy.

The GB & NI team recorded an impressive tally of seven gold medals with Polly Maton (Colin Baross) clinching two in the T46 100m before a personal best in the T46 long jump. The 15 year old, who won 100m gold at the IWAS World Junior Games in Stoke Mandeville this year illustrated her undoubted potential taking the sprint crown in 13.47 before eclipsing her personal best in the long jump by an impressive 19cm.

Maton’s teammate Amy Carr (Rick Betts), a bronze medallist at the IWAS World Junior Games also recorded a lifetime best to win the T37 100m in 14.86, while Melissa Berry stormed away from the opposition in the closing stages to take victory in the T13 1500m.

Sabrina Fortune (Ian Robinson) took top spot in the women’s T20 shot put recording a distance of 12.49m, with IWAS World Junior Games silver medallist Matthew Hamilton (Matthew Lumm) winning gold in the T46 400m clocking 54.89.

City of Plymouth’s James Arnott (Stephen Endacott), who won two sprint bronze medals in Stoke Mandeville was in top form as the 17 year old raced to victory in the T46 100m in 11.78.
