England & Wales U20/Senior Combined Events Championships, Sheffield, 10-11 January

It was a busy weekend of action at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield for the many of the country’s top combined eventers as they battled it out for their respective titles. Karla Drew (coach: Toni Minichiello) and Ben Gregory (Julie Hollman) took the senior titles over the two days of competition.

Sheffield-based Drew enjoyed a strong all-round performance to go to 10th of the UK-all time indoor pentathlon rankings with 4199 points. Along the way she recorded a personal best in the shot put to achieve a lifetime best and start 2015 in fine style. Commonwealth Heptathlon bronze medallist Jess Taylor (Mike Holmes) finished in second also recording a new personal best of 4172 and going 11th on the UK all-time list and achieving a personal best in the 60m Hurdles in the process. Jo Rowland (Minichiello) rounded off the podium places with another lifetime best of 4115 to complete an entertaining competition in South Yorkshire.

Gregory triumphed in the men’s competition, and after taking the lead after the penultimate event, he went on to run a personal best in the 1000m of 2:42.57 to secure the victory with a points total of 5663. There were personal bests for Martin Brockman who finished in second and Daniel Needham (Roy Needham) in third. Futures Programme athlete, David Hall (Ian Grant) was the first U23 in the competition overall in fourth position with a lifetime best of 5267 points.

Birchfield’s Ebony Wake (Hollman) and Gateshead’s Anthony Hogg (Sam Stanislaus) won the U20 pentathlon and heptathlon titles respectively in Sheffield.

The European Championships 20km walk finalist Tom Bosworth (Andi Drake) opened his 2015 campaign with a good performance to win the 3km walk at the EIS in a time of 11:52:36.

Midland First Open Meeting, Birmingham, Sunday 11 January

Isobel Pooley (Fuzz Ahmed) continued where she left off in 2014, opening the year with a jump of 1.90m, a new indoor personal best for the 22 year-old.

Chris Kandu (Ahmed) also began his 2015 brightly in Birmingham with a 2.23m jump, just one centimetre down on his personal best recorded last season at Bedford. He finished second in a fascinating men’s high jump competition at the Alexander Stadium which also saw IPC European high jump silver medallist Jonathan Broom-Edwards (Ahmed) start the year with a 2.07m jump for sixth place.

Julian Reid was also in action in the long jump and leapt to 7.91m, a great start to his indoor season.

Cardiff Met Grand Prix (Including South West England U20 / Senior Championships)

Aled Davies (Ryan Spencer-Jones) began 2015 with a bang to record a new F42 indoor shot put world record of 15.53m in south Wales. It is an encouraging start to the new season for the Paralympic, world and European champion who made a coaching change in the autumn last year.

David Omoregie (Mike Guest) started his year in fine style with a 7.87 clocking in the 60m Hurdles and 6.87 over the 60m. It was a new personal best in the 60m for the Welshman who took hurdles bronze at the World Junior Championships last year.

BMC Sheffield Open, Sunday 11 January

Rachel Bamford (Mike Baxter) took to the track just under twenty-four hours after competing on the mud in Edinburgh in the 2x1km cross country relay, winning the 1500m A race in Sheffield in 4:19.34 with Charnwood’s Gemma Hillier recording a new personal best of 4.20.92 in second.

In the men’s race, Harry Harper (Phil Townsend) won a close race from Ben Coldray (Craig Winrow) in 3.48.76, whilst Jake Shelley (David Chalfen) ran 7.59.57 to finish a close second to Irishman Paul Pollock.

Capitale Perche, France, 10 January 2015

World indoor youth record holder in the pole vault Adam Hague (Trevor Fox) jumped 5.26m in France at the weekend. Luke Cutts (Fox) also competed in Aubiere and cleared 5.50m to finish in fourth place.

Yorkshire County Cross Country Championships, Lightwater Valley, Saturday 11 January

Jonathan Thewlis (Thomas Watson) won his first county title by some distance at Lightwater Valley, with Alexandra Bell (Aaron Thomas) narrowly winning the senior women’s Yorkshire crown by three seconds, with Bronwen Owen (Andrew Henderson) taking the junior crown.

Birmingham League Division 1, Coventry, Saturday 10 January

Phil Wylie recorded another victory in the Birmingham League as the Cheltenham athlete finished fifteen seconds ahead of Jack Gray and team mate, Graham Rush in Coventry.

ATW Metropolitan League, Horsenden Hill, Saturday 10 January

2012 Olympian Lee Merrien (John Nuttall) was in action at the Metropolitan League on Saturday and ran well to take the victory just seven seconds ahead of Highgate Harriers duo, Auden Nortveidt and Shaun Dixon (Ben Noad). Rachel Felton (Christopher Frapwell) secured yet another win in the senior women’s race.
