London Senior/U20 Games, Lee Valley, London, 31 Jan – 1 Feb

Chijindu Ujah (coach: Jonas Tawiah-Dodoo) opened his indoor season with the fourth fastest time in the world this year over 60m. The 20 year old clocked a new personal best of 6.53 to take him to joint tenth in the UK all-time rankings, with John Otugade (Tom McNab) and training partner Ojie Edoburun (Tawiah-Dodoo) finishing in second and third in 6.67 and 6.69 respectively.  

European and Commonwealth 200m silver medallist Jodie Williams (Christine Bowmaker) bounced back from a second place finish in round one to beat Rachel Johncock (Leon Baptiste) 7.35 to 7.38. Johncock did however clock 7.37 in the first round. Lucy Hatton (Alex Clark) broke her personal best in the 60m hurdles to match Serita Solomon’s UK lead of 8.13, while Yasmin Miller (Lloyd Cowan), second behind Hatton, also went quicker than her previous best with an 8.23 clocking.

IPC European 100m bronze medallist Olivia Breen (Tawiah-Dodoo) was also in action, posting times of 8.69 and 8.74 in a strong start to 2015 for the 18 year old.

Karlsruhe IAAF Indoor Permit Meeting, Germany, 31 Jan

There were lifetime bests for all four British athletes in Germany on a busy and successful weekend.

Dina Asher-Smith (John Blackie) continued her magnificent run of form by winning the 60m and setting a personal best of 7.12 twice in both the heat and the final. She matched the time set by the 2014 European 100m and 200m champion Dafne Schippers in the heats but the Dutch athlete was disqualified in the final. The Blackheath and Bromley athlete briefly held the world leading time after the race so it sets her up perfectly for the Sainsbury’s British Indoor Championships in a couple of weeks’ time.

Lawrence Clarke (Malcolm Arnold) followed up his stunning dip finish victory in Dusseldorf on Thursday by equalling his personal best and earning a third place finish in the 60m hurdles. Clarke ran 7.63 in the heats to match his winning time last week and maintained his consistency running the same time again in the final to finish third. Additionally, David Omoregie (Mike Guest) ran a personal best of 7.73 in the heats but couldn’t quite match this in the final where he ran 7.95 for seventh place.

Continuing the fine run of British performances in Germany was Laura Muir (Andy Young) who ran a lifetime best of 8:49.73 in the 3000m for second place behind Russia’s Elena Korobkina.

Vienna Indoor Meeting, Austria, 31 Jan

Louise Bloor (Toni Minichiello) showed good early season form, revising her personal best to 7.36 for second place in the women’s 60m, backing that up with a 23.64 200m clocking. In the men’s sprints, Tom Somers (Geoffrey Barraclough) and Chris Stone (Alastair Abrams)both set indoor personal bests of 21.17 and 21.22 in their respective 200m races.

In the men’s 400m Jarryd Dunn (Keith Holt) and Jamie Bowie (Piotr Haczek) went second and third on the Power of 10 with 46.98 and 47.15 winning performances in their respective heats, whilst Seren Bundy-Davies (Stephen Ball) smashed her personal best to win the women’s race in 52.20.

There was also a return to form for Jenny Meadows (Trevor Painter) who took the 800m in a very impressive 1:59.21 gun to tape victory.

The pick of the bunch though was Adam Hague (Trevor Fox) who continues to go from strength to strength, once again revising his British junior pole vault record with a 5.55m winning performance.

Armory Track Invitational, New York, USA, 30-31 Jan

Chris O’Hare (Terrance Mahon) opened his indoor campaign with a 3:57.26 mile for second place, which bodes well for the year ahead. Also in good form was Lee Emmanuel (Joe Franklin) who recorded an 8:21.24 time for the rarely run two mile distance, good for fifth place in a top drawer field.

University of Washington Invitational, Seattle, USA, 30-31 Jan

There were more strong mile performances further north, with Tom Farrell (Mark Rowland) opening his 2015 campaign with a 3.58.33 run for third, whilst two places back was Matt Clowes (Bashir Hussain), who had a breakthrough run clocking 3.58.96, his first sub four minute mile.

There was also a massive personal best over 3000m for Sam Stabler (Darren Gauson), who was third in his heat in 7.53.98.

New Mexico Team Invitational, Alberquerque, USA, 31 Jan

Former GB & NI junior international Sam Watts (Gladys Bird) clocked a scintillating 200m time of 20.69, however given the altitude the performance won’t count for qualification purposes.

Vault Manchester, Sportcity, Manchester, 31 Jan

105 pole vaulters took part in the second of the vault tri-series which saw Commonwealth Games silver medallists Luke Cutts (Trevor Fox) and Sally Peake (Scott Simpson) take the senior victories in Manchester. 

Cutts jumped a seasons best of 5.52m to go to second on the UK list in 2015, beating Andrew Sutcliffe (Christian North) who was 10cm further back. In the women’s competition, Sally Peake was triumphant after a tense jump-off at Sportscity. The Welshwoman jumped 4.07 to beat Courtney Maguire (Kate Rooney nee Dennison), with the latter recording a personal best of 4.02m to claim second place.

Scottish National Senior Championships, Emirates Arena, Glasgow, 1 Feb

Allan Smith (Bryan Roy) and David Smith (Fuzz Ahmed) entertained the crowds with a close high jump competition at the Emirates Arena this weekend. Both athletes leapt 2.25m but it was Allan Smith who claimed the Scottish title on count back. David Smith equalled his personal best set last year.

Russian Winter Meeting, Moscow , Russia, 1 Feb

World Indoor bronze medallist Andrew Osagie (Craig Winrow) narrowly missed out on a personal best in the 600m, as he finished behind Qatar’s Mujaeb Balla in a time of 1:16.50. Rabah Yousif (Carol Williams) was second in the men’s 400m crossing the line in 47.28, while Dwain Chambers (Tawiah-Dodoo) opened up with 6.74 and 6.83 in the men’s 60m, with 38 year old Kim Collins taking the win in a new lifetime best and world leading time of 6.48.

British Universities Cross Country Championships, Brighton, 31 Jan

Emelia Gorecka (Mick Woods) carried on where she left off at the Great Edinburgh XCountry to take a decisive victory at Stanmer Park ahead of Woods coached St Mary’s duo Sarah Astin and Amy Griffiths.

In the men’s race, Jonny Hay (Woods) recovered from an early fall to lead Birmingham University to a 1-2 and the team title. Jonny Davies (Rob McKim) stepped up to secure silver with Callum Hawkins representing the West of Scotland University in third; just six seconds separated the trio.

European Clubs Cross Country Championships, Guadalajara, Spain, 1 Feb

Lily Partridge (Woods) continued her recent excellent form to bag individual bronze in a strong field, leading Aldershot Farnham & District to team bronze. Steph Twell (Woods) also ran very well in fourth, with recent GB & NI debutant Georgia Bruinvels 23^rd and Louise Small (both Woods) 25^th.

In the men’s race Stockport Harriers were the GB & NI representatives and they finished sixth, with Patrick Martin (Dave Turnbull) leading the team home in 11^th.

Brooks Alsager 5, Alsager, 1 Feb

In this traditionally quick five miler, Welshman Ieuan Thomas (James Thie) took an impressive victory in 24.04, holding off Mark Draper (Rob Denmark) and John Beattie (Gavin Smith) who clocked 24.10 and 24.12 respectively. The women’s race was won by a returning Helen Clitheroe in 27.15, well clear of her nearest rival Kate Holt (Alan Morris).
