Beskydska Iatka Indoor meeting, Trinec, Czech Republic, 8 Feb

World junior heptathlon champion Morgan Lake (Eldon Lake) equalled the UK under 20 indoor high jump record with a 1.89m clearance. The 17-year-old’s first time clearance matched a mark set back in 1997 by Michelle Dunkley. Lake proceeded to attempt 1.92m but registered three failures, in a competition won with 1.98m by World Indoor champion Mariya Kuchina of Russia.

Next Saturday, Lake is due to face joint British senior outdoor record holders Katarina Johnson-Thompson (Mike Holmes) and Isobel Pooley (Fuzz Ahmed) in an intriguing high jump competition at the Sainsbury’s British Athletics Indoor Championships in Sheffield.

Birmingham Games, Barclaycard Arena, 7-8 Feb

Commonwealth silver medallist Isobel Pooley prepared for the big high jump competition at the Sainsbury’s British Athletics Indoor Championships with a winning clearance of 1.88m. There was a meeting record in the shot, Birchfield’s Eden Francis putting 15.94m. Her 19-year-old club-mate Charlotte Jones (Lincoln Asquith) won the 60m in 7.67, a lifetime best.

In the pole vault Max Eaves (Kate Dennison nee Rooney) notched his second win of the indoor season, clearing 5.25m. Ramone Smith (Daniel Cossins)  won the 60m final in 6.77, but was quicker in his semi-final with 6.74, a personal best.  Joel Fearon (Steve Fudge) ran 6.71 in the heats and semis but did not line up for the final. Victory in the 200m went to Antonio Infantino (Martey Newman), the Shaftesbury Barnet Harrier clocking 20.97. David King (James Hillier) won the 60m hurdles in 7.86.

World 200m bronze medallist Sophie Kamlish (Rob Ellchuk) clocked 9.31 in her season opener over 60m, while training partners Paul Blake (Ellchuk) and Ben Rushgrove (Ellchuk) also made their bows over the distance finishing in 8.09 and 8.28 respectively. Rushgrove also tried his hand at the shot put with a best throw of 9.69m in Birmingham.

New Mexico Collegiate Classic, Albuquerque, USA, 6 Feb

Commonwealth pole vault champion Steve Lewis (Dan Pfaff) improved his season’s best with a winning vault of 5.71. Like the 5.65 he cleared in Nevada on 16 January, it was an altitude-assisted mark but it elevated Lewis into sixth place in the world rankings.

New York Metropolitan Cup, USA, 6 Feb

European cross country silver medallist Kate Avery (Tony Simmons) opened her 2015 indoor season with a convincing mile win. Running for Iona College, the Shildon athlete prevailed in 4:42.85, finishing 12.98sec clear of Australian runner-up Isobel Batt-Doyle.

Gugl  Indoor Meeting, Linz, Austria, 6 Feb

Serita Solomon (Michelle Bovill) continued to chip away at her 60m hurdles personal best. Following her stunning win in the Sainsbury’s Glasgow International match in  8.13, the Blackheath and Bromley athlete improved her lifetime best to 8.11 in finishing runner up in her heat to Olympic 2012 finalist Beate Schrott of Austria (8.09). Both women were beaten in the final, 2012 world indoor bronze medallist Alina Talay of Belarus triumphing in 7.98. Schrott took second in 8.10 with Solomon third in 8.16.

There was just the one individual winner from the England team competing in the meeting, Sebastian Rodger (John Hillier) opening his indoor season with a decisive 400m victory in 47.13. The 2013 European Under 23 400m hurdles silver medallist finished 0.57 clear of runner up Mehmet Guzel of Turkey.

In a strong women’s 800m,Shelayna Oskan-Clarke (Ayo Falola) took third place in 2:04.37 – behind 2014 world indoor finalist Lenka Masna (2:03.55) and reigning world 400m hurdles champion Zuzana Hejnova (2:03.60), both of the Czech Republic. Adelle Tracey ( Craig Winrow) was fourth in an indoor PB of 2:05.80, taking the scalp of Italy’s 2009 European indoor bronze medallist Elisa Cusma (fifth in 2:06.59).  In the 60m Abbi Tyson (Graham Hedman) clocked a season’s best  7.58 in the heats and 7.67 for seventh place in the final.

Marvin Popoola (Les Johnson) won his 60m heat in 6.72, an improvement of 0.02 on the PB he set in Vienna on 31 January. However, the 19 year-old Herne Hill Harrier was hit by injury when it came to the final, failing to finish.

Kieran Daly (Jonas Tawiah-Dodoo) equalled his lifetime best with a 6.83 heat win and the 22-year-old Blackheath and Bromley athlete improved to 6.82 in the final, finishing runner up to Zdenek Stromsik of the Czech Republic, a clear winner in 6.70. Stroud’s Ben Coldray (Craig Winrow) clocked an indoor PB of 3:47.55 for eighth place in the 1500m.

Commonwealth decathlon silver medallist Ashley Bryant (Ian Grant) had a busy evening, clocking 8.31 for fifth place in his 60m hurdles heat and leaping 7.25m for fourth place in the long jump. Gabriel Odujobi (Tony Jarrett) was joint seventh in the 60m hurdles final, clocking 8.07, while Julian Reid (Aston Moore) finished runner up in the long jump with 7.75m.

Reid’s Birchfield club mate Mike Edwards (Fayyaz Ahmed) cleared 2.16m for third in the high jump.  Rory Dwyer (Paul Bearman) was sixth with 2.12m.

LAC Erdgas Meeting, Chemnitz, Germany , 7 Feb

World indoor 60m champion Richard Kilty (Linford Christie) equalled his season’s best in finishing runner up to Germany’s Christian Blum. Kilty clocked 6.57, to Blum’s 6.56, matching the time he posted at the  Copernicus Cup meeting at Torun in Poland on 3 February. The Gateshead Harrier won his heat in 6.66.

In the 400m Luke Lennon-Ford (Linford Christie) was 0.03 shy of the 2015 best he set in Torun. The Thames Valley Harrier was third in 47.74. World Indoor champion Pavel Maslek of the Czech Republic won in a meeting record 45.82, with Pole Rafal Onelko second in 46.68.

Meeting de Mondeville, France, 7 Feb

Lawrence Clarke (Malcolm Arnold) continued his excellent run of form with a lifetime 60m hurdles time of 7.59. The 2010 Commonwealth bronze medallist finished runner up to Dimitri Bascou of France, who improved his world lead to 7.51. For Clarke, it was an improvement of 0.04 on the personal best he had set in Dusseldorf on 29 January and twice equalled in Karlsruhe two days later. He now stands fifth in the world rankings and second in Europe and has risen to ninth in the UK all-time list, overtaking David Nelson and Ross Baillie (both 7.60). Next up for the 24-year-old is the Sainsbury’s British Athletics Indoor Championships in Sheffield next weekend.

Meanwhile, Sean Safo Antwi (Jonas Towiah Dodoo) clocked 6.65 for third place in the 60m, behind world leader Kim Collins of St Kitts and Nevis (6.58) and Antigua’s Daniel Bailey (6.63). Safo Antwi won his heat in 6.66.

IFAM Indoor Meeting, Gent, Belgium 7 Feb

Commonwealth Games 800m finalist Alison Leonard (Bud Baldaro) moved to third on the UK indoor 1500m list for the season, behind Laura Muir (Andy Young) and Jessica Judd (George Gandy), with 4:14.55 for fifth place. Melissa Courtney (Mark Pauley) was close behind the Blackburn Harrier, taking sixth place in 4:15.49.

Welsh 800m runner Jade Williams maintained her consistency with a fourth 2:06 clocking of the season, finishing sixth in 2:06.29. Robbie Fitzgibbon (Jon Bigg) finished sixth in the men’s 1500m in 3:49.42.

Workingham Half Marathon, 8 Feb

In a three way tussle, Phil Wicks (Keith Donkin) finished second to New Zealander but British resident Paul Martelletti, with the duo clocking 64.18 and 64.33 respectively. In the women’s race, Hayley Munn took victory in a personal best 75.43 ahead of Mara Yamauchi (Shige Yamauchi) who clocked 75.58.

Meyo Invitational, USA, 6-7 Feb 

Tiffany Porter (Rana Reider) secured the European Indoor qualifying standard in two consecutive races, posting 7.99 and 8.01 to take the World Indoor bronze medallist to the top of the UK standings for 2015.
