Away from the Sainsbury’s Indoor British Championship in Sheffield this weekend, there were plenty of Britons competing all over the world both indoors and cross country.

Millrose Games, New York City, 14 Feb

European cross country silver medallist Kate Avery (coach: Tony Simmons) clocked 8:53.12 for sixth place in the 3,000m, moving to second behind Laura Muir in the UK rankings. The time was inside the European Indoor Championships qualifying standard.

Rosie Clarke (Thomas Watson) was also in fine form running 4:12.18 over 1500m and 4:31.78 over a mile on the same day, which both count as the qualifying standard for Prague. 

Chris O’Hare (Terrence Mahon) was disappointed to finish out of the frame in the classic Wanamaker Mile in the 108th edition of the Millrose Games. The European 1500m bronze medallist had to settle for sixth place in 3:55.35, a season’s best for the Scot but 2.37 seconds shy of his PB. World Championship 1500m silver medallist Matt Centrowitz of the USA won in 3:51.35, edging out New Zealander Nick Willis (3:51.46). Fourth-placed Bernard Lagat of the US broke Eamonn Coghlan’s 21-year-old world over 40 record, clocking 3:54.91.

Running in the Paavo Nurmi 5,000m race, Border Harrier Tom Farrell (Mark Rowland) finished eighth in 13:42.17, the fastest time by a Briton thus far in 2015.

Tyson Indoor Invitational, Fayetteville, USA, 13-14 Feb

Michael Bingham (George Williams) opened his season with the fastest indoor 400m run by a Briton in 2015. The Birchfield Harrier clocked 46.30 as runner-up to LaToy Williams of the Bahamas, who won in 46.20. Delano Williams (Neil Harrison) has gone faster than Bingham this year but his 46.20 was recorded outdoors in Kingston, Jamaica, last month. George Caddick (Clyde Hart), who previously led the indoor list with 46.54, finished fourth in the B string 400m race in 47.15.

Sam Watts (Gladys Bird) won the 200m in 20.70, just 0.01 slower than the altitude-assisted time with which he leads the UK rankings.

Commonwealth hammer throw silver medallist Nick Miller won the WT15.88k* with a throw of 22.46m to set a season’s best.

Iowa State Classic, Ames, America – 12-13 Feb

Matthew Fayers (Steven Dokic) ran is first ever sub-four minute mile in Iowa. The 20 year-old not only set a new PB of 3:59.55 but he also won the second mile race of the meeting. Neil Gourley (Gordon Lockie) also ran a lifetime best of 4:03.50 to finish sixth in the same race. Liam Dee, racing in another mile contest, continued the PB streak recording a time of 4:05.13 for fifth place in a strong day of mile performances by the young Britons.

European Cross Country team silver medallist Marc Scott (Steve Gulley) clocked a personal best in the 5000m of 13:47.96, with Iona Lake (Pauline Ash) just outside her 3000m personal best in 9:24.30.

David Hemery Valentine Invitational, Boston, USA – 12-13 Feb

2013 European Junior 3000m steeplechase champion Zak Seddon showed signs of returning to his best form with a 7:59.40 personal best in the 3000m at the meeting in Boston. Fellow Florida State University athlete Jack Goodwin (Simon Goodwin) also ran a personal best for 14th place in a time of 8:06.76.

Commonwealth Games steeplechase Pippa Woolven (Janet Nash) set a season’s best of 9:33.69 in the women’s 3000m race for 12th place in Boston.

Midland Indoor Championships, Birmingham – 14-15 Feb

Double IPC European bronze medallist Laura Sugar (Femi Akinsanya) followed up her 8.71 PB from Loughborough a few weeks ago so clock 8.72 over the 60m in Birmingham this weekend.

Mark Lewis-Francis (Tony Hadley) won the men’s 60m title with a time of 6.85 to become Midland champion.

Husky Classic Indoor Meeting, Seattle, USA, 13-14 Feb

Aldershot’s Oliver Aitchison won the mile in 4:01.11, a PB and the fourth fastest by a British athlete at the distance in 2015. There was also a British winner in the 3,000m, Michael Vennard (Andrew Carter) prevailing in 8:09.50.

Matthew Clowes (Bashir Hussain) finished sixth in a different 3000m race in 8:05.18 and was also runner-up in the 800m recording a time of 1:49.85.

Scot Jax Thoirs (Pat Licari) took second in the pole vault with 5.32m.

In the women’s events, Sarah Inglis clocked 4:36.60 for second place in the mile with Kaylee Dodds (Ellie Morrison) third in the 800m in 2:06.30, a PB. Hazel Ross (Laurier Primeau) finished fourth in the final of the 60m hurdles in 8.51, after winning her heat in 8.65

Don Kirby Open and Elite Indoor Meeting, Albuquerque, USA, 13-14 Feb

Allan Hamilton (John Scott) maintained his consistent form with an altitude-assisted leap of 7.50m for sixth place in the long jump.

Cinque Mulini Cross Country, San Vittore Olona, Italy, 13 Feb

Swansea’s Caryl Jones finished an outstanding fifth in the women’s race in the 83rd running of the Cinque Mulini (Five Mills) cross country event. In difficult muddy conditions, Jones came home in 25.30, 70 seconds behind the victorious Kenyan Violet Jelegat.

Jones’ Swansea club-mate Dewi Griffiths (Kevin Evans) was the highest placed of three Welsh finishers in the top 20 of the men’s race, won by Ethiopian Muktar Edris in 33:50. Griffith was seventh in 35:00, with Jonathan Hopkins (Ridley Griffith) 13th in 36:28 and Joshua Griffiths (James Thie) 18th recording 37:38.

Completing a fine day for Swansea Harriers, Olivia Gwynn (Kevin Tobin) won the women’s under 20 race in 18.17.Menai’s Iolo Hughes (Andrew Walling) was fifth in the men’s under 20 race in 22:25.
