Weekend Update

14 September 2015

New York Road Runners’ Fifth Avenue Mile, New York City, USA, 13 September

Chris O’Hare (coach: Terrence Mahon) ended a whirlwind, rollercoaster week on a high with the runners-up spot in the prestigious end of season Fifth Avenue Mile in the heart of Manhattan. It was the European 1500m bronze medallist’s third race in the space of five days, having failed to finish in Zagreb on Tuesday and tenth over 1500m in the final Diamond League meeting of the season in Brussels on Friday.

Less than 48 hours after competing in the Belgian capital, the 24-year-old Scot showed no signs of jet-lag or fatigue as he surged to the front of a world class field in the final quarter of a mile. He was passed some 150m from the line by Nick Willis, the New Zealander pulling clear to take the victory in 3:54.8. O’Hare hung on for second in 3:55.9, ahead of Dane Henrik Ingebritsen and American Matt Centrowitz, who both clocked 3:56.1. Brighton Phoenix’s World Championship 1500m finalist Charlie Grice was seventh in 3:57.0.

O’Hare described it as a “good end to a tough year. My other two races were pretty dreadful. Today I felt terrible at the start but I thought, ‘Just get in the mix’ and instinct took over.”
