European 10,000m Cup, Mersin, Turkey, 5 June

Britain’s women’s team won team gold at the annual European Cup 10,000m in Mersin, Turkey. Jenny Nesbitt (coach: David Walker) secured third place at the 2016 edition of the event, matching Lily Partridge’s performance 12 months ago. That 33.45.46 run by Nesbitt was just two seconds down on her personal best set at Highgate two weeks ago. Lauren Deadman was seventh in 34.10.79, with Louise Small (Mick Woods) 12th in 34.49.69.

In the men’s race, Ben Connor was the pick of the Brits finishing 10th in 29.38.12, with Andy Maud and Luke Caldwell 15th and 16th leading the team to fourth place overall.

Laufnacht und Sparkassen Gala, Regensburg, Germany, 4-5 Jun

Emily Diamond (Jared Deacon) ran the fastest time of her career to date as she took victory in 51.23. That performance is over half a second faster than she’s ever run before and puts her top of the Power of 10 and inside the Olympic qualifying standard.

The following day Diamond anchored the GB & NI relay team to victory in 3.28.62, with Perri Shakes-Drayton (Chris Zah) competing for the first time since the 2013 Moscow World Championships. Kelly Massey (Stephen Ball) and Laviai Nielsen (Frank Adams) ran the opening two legs.

In the men’s 200m Danny Talbot (Benke Blomkvist) took victory in a season’s best of 20.48, despite a 0.8m/s headwind, which coupled as a European Championships qualifying standard.

BWAA/ BWRA/ CP Sport Grand Prix 2016, Stoke Mandeville – 4-5 June

David Weir (Jenny Archer) set two seasons bests in the T54 400m and 1500m as he tuned up for next week’s IPC Athletics European Championships in Italy. With times of 47.28 and 3:00.54 respectively, the Weir Archer academy athlete looked in good form. 

There was another personal best for Richard Chiassaro (Jenni Banks) in the T54 200m of 25.03, adding to his recent strong form. Mo Jomni (Archer) lowered his T53 100m best to 15.30 whilst T54 400m athlete Nathan Maguire raced to 49.77m his first time under the 50 second barrier.

Kylie Grimes (Philip Peat) threw over 17m for the first time in the F51 club throw with a best of 17.04m to show she continues her rapid improvement over the last year. Carly Tait (Rick Hoskins) secured a T34 100m best of 19.17. 

Samorin, Slovakia – 4 June 2016

On Saturday, Jack Green recorded a second Olympic qualifying standard in the 400m hurdles, setting 49.39, his fastest of the season.

 

UKWL Premier Division, Swansea, 4 June

Rachel Wallader set a terrific new personal best of 17.53 to win the women’s shot put and exceed the European Championship qualifying standard by three centimetres.

18 year old Hannah Brier (Neal Merry) clocked a season’s best of 11.47 (-0.1) to win the 100m ahead of 17 year old Alisha Rees (Willy Russell), Brier inside the World Junior Championship qualifying mark and Rees inside the European Youth Championship equivalent.

Meeting National 2 de Montbéliard, France, 1 Jun

Laura Muir (Andy Young) opened her season with a resounding two second victory over 800m, stopping the clock at 2.00.57, just outside her personal best. That’s the best start the young Scot had ever made to an outdoor season, which bodes well for her first 1500m in the coming weeks.

Combined Events, Arona, Spain – 4-5 June

Niamh Emerson (David Feeney) broke the British U18 heptathlon record previously held by Katarina Johnson-Thompson at the Arona event. The 17 year-old recorded a total of 5815 points following PBs in the shot put, 200m and long jump.
