The pick of the week’s action came on Wednesday night in Barcelona, as Michael Rimmer (coach: Jon Bigg) bounced back from a third place finish at the British Championships to take 800m victory over a quality international field. Kicking away to win in 1.44.93, Rimmer produced his fastest time for four years to beat the likes of Ayanleh Souleiman.

In the 1500m, Tom Lancashire (Steve Vernon) was also out for revenge having fallen in the British Championship final, and he too delivered, running a season’s best of 3.37.47 for seventh. Similarly there was a season’s best for Charlene Thomas (Aaron Thomas) as she finished fourth in the women’s event; however she was frustratingly just seven hundredths of a second outside the 4.07.00 Olympic qualifying mark.

Paavo Nurmi Games, Turku, Finland, 29 June

Fresh from winning his first British Championship title on Sunday, Seb Rodger (Stephen King) headed to Finland in pursuit of the Olympic qualifying time, having missed it by just five hundredths of a second on his way to victory in Birmingham. Despite another strong run for fourth, Rodger again missed out with a 49.60, two tenths outside the 49.40 time required.

In the men’s 5000m Andy Vernon (Nic Bideau) was fourth in a season’s best of 13.26.16, whilst David King (James Hillier) clocked 13.54 (+0.1) to win his heat of the 110mH, before finishing second in the final in 13.70 (0.0).

British Athletics League Premier Division, Birmingham, 2^nd June

Chris Baker (Sharon Heveran) was the pick of the bunch a week on from the British Championships at the same venue, as he cleared 2.25m to take victory in the high jump.

British Athletics League Division One, Bromley, 2^nd June

Like in the Premiership the best performance of the day came in the field, Jax Thoirs (Pat Licari) winning the pole vault with a 5.40m effort, just 5cm short of his outdoor season’s best.

UK Women’s League Premier Division, Lee Valley, 2^nd June

Mary Iheke (Christine Bowmaker) won the 400m with a 52.94 run ahead of 800m specialist Shelayna Oskan-Clarke (Jon Bigg) who clocked 53.36, both season’s bests. There was also a 53.50 personal best for 18 year old Lily Beckford (Linford Christie) in third.

Sally Peake (Scott Simpson) won the pole vault with a 4.30m clearance, whilst Adele Nicoll (Vladimir Zinchenko) produced her second personal best in as many weeks to win the shot put ahead of Sophie Mckinna (Mike Winch), 16.34m to 16.14m.

Watford Open Graded Opening Meeting, Watford, 19th June 

Commonwealth Games long jump fourth placer Olivia Breen (Jonas Tawiah-Dodoo/Julie Dodoo) jumped a best of 4.23m, just 15cm outside her personal best leap of 4.38m set in Newham earlier this month. Tony Mills (Edward Thompson), who made his senior international debut last year won the long jump with a distance of 6.20m.
