Loughborough European Athletics Permit, Loughborough, Saturday 16th June

In the men’s 110mH first year Loughborough University student David Omoregie (Blomkvist) had the mother of all breakthroughs, winning the final in 13.25 (+1.2), to become the fifth fastest British sprint hurdler ever. After winning the European U23 title last summer, the Welshman followed in the footsteps of his fellow countryman and idol Colin Jackson, running a flawless race before a huge dip ensured he produced the breakthrough that has been a long time coming.

Joel Fearon (Michael Khmel) smashed his lifetime best to take 100m victory at the Loughborough European Athletics Permit meeting; his 10.04 (+1.7m/s) time the joint fastest by a British athlete this year for an hour or so before Kilty’s run in Hexham.

Having run 10.15 in the first round, Fearon clocked 10.04 to win the final, also breaking the Loughborough University stadium record. Chasing him hard all the way was Harry Aikines-Aryeetey (Blomkvist), who also ran a brilliant race to equal his personal best of 10.08.

In the 100m heats earlier in the day Paralympic champion Jonnie Peacock (Dan Pfaff) smashed his personal best and the British record with a 10.68 (+1.4m/s) performance. That run was just outside the T44 world record, which stands at 10.61.

In the field Dan Greaves (John Godina) threw 61.25m in the final round of the men’s discus, just short of the 61.48m season’s best he threw to win the International Para Athletics Challenge in Amsterdam last weekend. There was also a 5.55m jump for Stef Reid (Aston Moore) in the women’s long jump, the second best mark of her career after a 5.78m jump last weekend, which broke the IPC T44 world record.

Hexham Senior Sprints Meeting, Hexham, Saturday 16 July

Richard Kilty (coach: Benke Blomkvist) went top of the Power of 10 British rankings as he clocked a personal best of 10.01 (+1.9m/s) to take victory in this low key meeting in the North East. After a 10.22 (-0.6) in series one, the European 60m champion showed his class in the second race to take 0.03 off his personal best set last year.

IPC Grand Prix, Berlin – Saturday 16 July

There was a personal best for Rhys Jones (Christian Malcolm) in the 100m, taking a narrow 0.01 seconds off his previous best, recording 11.81 (+1.2). He placed second in the race but it was a return to form for Jones who has endured injuries over the last 18 months. After earlier clocking 12.07 in his heat, the Welshman backed this up with a fine run in the final.

Libby Clegg (Joe McDonnell) has been reclassified as T11 Fixed review (2018) and ran her first competition in the classification, winning in a time of 12.39 (-1.6). Running with her guide Chris Clarke, she took the victory whilst running into a strong headwind in the German capital.

There was another British winner in the form of James Ledger (Richard Ledger) who clocked 11.97 (+0.0) to earn victory in the men’s T12 100m.

BWAA Grand Prix – Stoke Mandeville, Saturday 16 July

There was a big PB in the F32 club throw for Gemma Prescott (Mike Wood) who added a whopping 37cm to her previous best set in 2014. There was also a career best for compatriot Abbie Hunnisett (Anthony Hughes) who added 12cm to her previous best, finishing behind Prescott on 21.23m. She saved her best till last, throwing the furthest throw of her career with the final attempt.

There was a huge personal best for Richard Chiassaro (Jenni Banks) in the T54 1500m, winning in a time of 3:06.81, taking over 18 seconds off his previous best. It continues a rich vein of form for the Harlow athlete who won four medals at the recent IPC Athletics European Championships. He also won the 100m with a 14.84 (-0.2) clocking.

European champion Toby Gold (Jenny Archer) won the T33 100m in 18.02 (-0.2) whilst Ben Rowlings (Job King) pipped Isaac Towers (Peter Wyman) to victory in the T34 400m, posting times of 54.80 and 55.20 respectively. In the F32 club throw, Stephen Miller (Ros Miller) threw 30.99m in the fourth round, a season’s best.

KBC Night of Athletics, Heusden-Zolder, Belgium, Saturday 16 July

Shelayna Oskan-Clarke (Jon Bigg) followed up her British Championship winning run with a 2.00.73 season’s best for second place in Belgium. In fact there were season’s and personal bests all round for the British athletes in action at this favourable endurance event.

There were a pair of runner-up finishes in the 1500m; Charlene Thomas (Aaron Thomas) and Robbie Fitzgibbon (Bigg) running a season’s best of 4.05.98 and a personal best of 3.39.46 respectively.

Rio bound duo Jessica Andrews and Beth Potter (Mick Woods) both stepped down in distance to compete over 5,000m. Andrews ran another great race for second in a personal best of 15.24.02, whilst Potter wasn’t far behind with her 15.29.31 run. Back in ninth, Welsh international Elinor Kirk (Steve Vernon) knocked five seconds off her personal best with a 15.37.65 run. In the men’s race, there was also a personal best for Adam Clarke (Geoff Watkin) who finished tenth in 13.44.47.

Memorial Francisco Ramón Higueras, Andújar, Spain, Saturday 16 July

At this low key meeting in Spain, Olympic champion Greg Rutherford (Pfaff) took victory with a leap of 8.15 (-0.6), bettering the great Ivan Pedroso’s meeting record.

Meeting Città di Padova, Padova, Italy, Sunday 17 July

Out in Italy Laura Muir (Andy Young) and Hannah England (Bud Baldaro) were second and third over 800m, with times of 2.01.23 and 2.01.34 respectively, whilst Cindy Ofili (James Henry) won the hurdles in 13.11 (-0.8).

Internationales Hochsprung-Meeting, Eberstadt, Germany, Sunday 17 July

At this high quality high jump meeting that saw Derek Drouin take victory in 2.38m, Robbie Grabarz (Fuzz Caan) backed up his European Championship silver medal winning performance with a 2.27m clearance for fifth.

Folksam Grand Prix, Gothenburg, Sweden, Friday 15 July

There was a British 1-2-3 over 100m on a windy night in Sweden, as Adam Gemili (Steve Fudge) continued his return to form with victory. Running into a stiff 1.6m/s headwind, Gemili was a clear winner in 10.21, from training partners Ojie Edoburun and Chijindu Ujah (both Jonas Tawiah-Dodoo) who clocked 10.29 and 10.30 respectively. 20 year old Edoburun, who will join Gemili and Ujah in the relay squad in Rio, clocked 10.25 (+1.6) in the heats.

There was also victory for Rabah Yousif (Carol Williams) in a season’s best of 45.48, with Nigel Levine (Linford Christie) third in 46.04.

Lee Emanuel (Joe Franklin) was third the men’s 3000m in a season’s best of 7.52.41, whilst in the rarely run 1000m James Bowness (William Parker) and Sarah McDonald (Baldaro) were third and fourth in times of 2.19.31 and 2.38.63 respectively.

Szekesfehervar meeting – Saturday 16 July

Sophie Hitchon (Tore Gustafsson) threw 70.13m in the hammer throw competition in Szekesfehervar. After finishing fourth at the European championships last week, the British record holder continued her consistent form as she heads towards the Olympic Games.
