James Bowness (William Parker) ran a huge lifetime best of 1.45.96 in the 800m, which sees him leap up to fourth on the UK rankings. His previous best of 1.47.18 set last month was taken apart as he finished second behind Australia’s Peter Bol in Belgium yesterday.

Leiria International Throwing Meeting, Leiria, Portugal, 23-24 July  

Taylor Campbell (John Pearson) added over a metre to his personal best in the hammer with a throw of 72.70m. Only three athletes, all of whom are going to the Olympic Games this summer, are ahead of the 20 year old in the UK rankings for 2016.

BMC Oxford, Oxford, Saturday 23 July

After an injury-troubled few years, Andy Baddeley (Andrew Hobdell) was in impressive form winning the mile in 3.59.46. Baddeley said afterwards: “I really enjoyed that race and to win was brilliant. It was arguably the toughest and best thing I have done in my career as the last four years have been so difficult for me.”

Sarah McDonald (Bud Baldaro) produced a four second personal best as she won the women’s 800m A race in 2.01.10.

In the rarely run 1500m steeplechase, there was a British best time of 4.04.86 for Jermaine Mays which saw him bypass Steve Mitchell’s (James Thie) record of 4.07.  

After winning gold at the European Youth Championships George Mills (Joanne Day) continued his run of form winning the 800m in a new lifetime best of 1.48.36,underlining his future potential in the event.

Morton Games, Dublin, Ireland, Friday 22 July

It was an impressive weekend of running from Alexandra Bell (coach: Aaron Thomas) as the 23 year old ran a personal best of 2.00.53 to win the 800m in Dublin. 24 hours later, she was back on the track finishing seventh at the Muller Anniversary Games at The Stadium, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park with a 2.01.63 run.

After a long injury lay-off, Kyle Langford (George Harrison) looked back to his very best winning the 800m in 1.46.73 – the second fastest time of his career.  

Rhys Williams (Adrian Thomas) produced his third fastest time of the year to win the 400m hurdles in 49.50 finishing ahead of 2013 World bronze medallist Jehue Gordon.  

In the 400m flat, Jarryd Dunn (Keith Holt) had to settle for third place behind Winston George (GUY) and Sadam Koumi (SUD) running 46.28.

Ben Rowlings (Job King) got the better of his compatriot Isaac Towers (Peter Wyman) in the wheelchair 1500m 1:50.93 to 1:52.63 with the British duo aiming for selection for the Paralympic Games in Rio. 

2011 World 1500m silver medallist Hannah England (Bud Baldaro) was sixth in the women’s mile in 4.33.48.  

David Smith finished first in the high jump with a best clearance of 2.22m.

Scottish Athletics Throws Grand Prix, Livingston, Saturday 23 July

Three days after producing his biggest throw of 2016 in Gateshead, Stephen Miller (Ros Miller) continued his solid run of form in the club throw. The 36 year old aiming for his sixth Paralympic Games threw 31.40m – just 28cm off his best throw of the year earlier in the week.

Allan Smith (Bryan Roy) was in action over in Germany clearing 2.25m in the high jump, 1cm outside his season’s best.
