Scottish Athletics National Senior Championships, Grangemouth, 13-14 August

Saturday’s program in Grangemouth saw 2012 Olympian Freya Ross run strongly in less than favourable conditions to claim her first national title on the track for six years in a time of 16:56.65 over 5000m.

Out in the field, Inverness Harrier Kirsty Law (John Godina) stretched her run as national champion to an incredible nine years in the discus with a best of 52.64m, with victories also coming for last year’s champions Kirsty Yates (Joyce Rammell) and Greg Millar (David Parker) in the shot put and javelin respectively.

T44 Paralympic Games silver medallist Stef Reid (Aston Moore) was in action alongside T35 100m and 200m specialist Maria Lyle on day two in Scotland, with the latter running a season’s best of 29.72 in the 200m to accompany her victory in the 100m. Reid, who jumped to an unofficial world lead last month in Newham, produced her best of 5.44m in the opening round.

There was a native record for Nick Percy in the discus as he threw a best of 59.90m to eclipse the best performance by a scot on home soil in the event. Percy, who also won the shot put on Sunday and hammer on Saturday to complete a medal hat-trick, was delighted with his achievement post-event, saying: “It completes the perfect year for me. I’ve won everything I wanted to, including the NCAA and British titles as well as the Scottish title, and I’ve been pushing the boundaries on the Scottish National Records.”

In a mixed sex field event it was F32 world and European club throw champion Jo Butterfield (Phillip Peat/Shona Malcolm) who snatched victory by 1cm to take the win ahead of Graham Condie (Bronwin Carter) with a throw of 20.70m.
