Weekend Update

Great Birmingham Half Marathon, Birmingham, 16 October

Andy Vernon (coach: Nic Bideau) scored a terrific victory in his first half marathon in two years, getting the better of Chris Thompson (Mark Rowland), pulling away just before the 10 mile mark. In the end Vernon stopped the clock at 63.32 on the hilly course, defeating club mate Thompson by 18 seconds. The duo will do battle again at the Great South Run next weekend.

In the women’s race GB & NI cross country international Lauren Deadman (Bill Foster) was third overall and first Brit with a time of 74:54, a minute clear of Olympian Sonia Samuels.

Aldi Manchester Half Marathon, Manchester, 16 October

In a ding-dong battle all the way to the line, Adam Hickey (Eamonn Martin) edged out Matt Bond (Norman Poole) to take victory in the inaugural Manchester Half Marathon in 64.41. That was Hickey’s first serious attempt at the 13.1 mile distance, proving he is in good shape ahead of the cross country season. Bond finished just five seconds back, whilst Carl Hardman (Poole) and Alastair Watson were both inside 66 minutes.

In the women’s race Bedford & County’s Rebecca Murray (Alex Stanton) took the title in an impressive 62.59 debut, nearly a minute clear of Louise Small (Mick Woods) who also produced a huge personal best.

Pre-National Invitational, Terre Haute, Indiana, USA, 15 October

Former GB & NI junior international Alex Short (Philip O’Dell) produced arguably the run of his career to place seventh in a race won by multiple time NCAA champion Edward Cheserek. Short was the leading British finisher, although Alex George (Paul de-Camps), Ryan Forsyth and Michael Ward (Paul Darney) were 14th, 15th and 16th respectively.

In the women’s race Bethan Knights (Shayla Houlihan) continued her good form with an eighth place finish over the 6km course.

Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, Madison, USA, 14 October

In this classic collegiate cross country race, one of the biggest meets prior to the NCAA Cross Country Championships, European U23 10,000m bronze medallist Alice Wright (Joe Franklin) showed her class with a second place finish, just one second behind the winner. In fourth, Amy-Eloise Neal produced arguably the run of her career, whilst Calli Thackery (Franklin) also put in a top ten performance.

Kieran Clements (Ricardo Santos)was the top British finisher in the men’s race in seventh place, whilst Scot Luke Traynor (Dudley Walker) was 11th just three seconds further back.
