Weekend Update

IAAF Cross Country Permit, Burgos, Spain, 13 November

At this early season international cross country permit in Spain, Katie Maltby nee Hulls (coach: Christopher Frapwell) was the pick of the British athletes in action as she finished in an impressive eighth place. Ethiopia’s Teferi Senbere took victory in the women’s race, with Maltby eighth, Eli Kirk (Steve Vernon) ninth and Charlotte Arter (James Thie) eleventh.

In the men’s race, Dewi Griffiths (Kevin Evans) was the best placed Brit in 14th, one place behind 2015 European Cross Country Championship fourth placer Ayad Landassem, with African athletes filling eight of the top twelve spots.

In the junior races Zoe Wassel (Frapwell) took second, whilst in the junior men’s race Mahamed Mahamed (Peter Haynes) was the first Brit in fourth.

Hampshire League, Bournemouth, 12 November

In an extremely emotional Hampshire League, Louise Small (Mick Woods) was victorious in the senior women’s race, some 30 seconds clear of Phoebe Law (Woods) in second place. Prior to the race a minutes silence was held in memory of Lucy Pygott and Stacey Burrows who were tragically killed whilst out running earlier this week.

Kent League, Sparrows Den, 12 November

Scott Overall (Alan Storey) took victory ahead of young Tonbridge duo Corey De’Ath and George Duggan (both Mark Hookway), who both put in good performances ahead of the second leg of the British Athletics Cross Challenge in Liverpool later this month.

Start Fitness Metropolitan League, Stevenage, 12 November

Richard Goodman (Mick Woods) made it two wins from two in the Met League this season, winning by 10 seconds. In the women’s race 800m specialist Revee Walcott-Nolan (Matt Yates) produced arguably her best long cross country performance to date, taking victory ahead of Naomi Taschimowitz (Charlotte Fisher).

Surrey League, Coulsdon, 12 November

Jon Pepper (Jon Bigg) got the better of Nick Torry in this classic cross country league race.

NCAA Division I Mountain Regional Championships, Utah, USA, 11 November

Alice Wright (Joe Franklin) followed Conference Championship victory by winning her penultimate race of the NCAA cross country season, the Mountain Regional Championships. The GB & NI international will now look to improve on her fifth place finish at last year’s NCAA Cross Country Championships and will be one of the favourites for the title. Calli Thackery (Franklin) was eleventh.

NCAA Division I West Regional Championships, California, USA, 11 November

In the West region, Amy-Eloise Neale took an impressive victory, 13 seconds clear of fellow Briton Charlotte Taylor who finished second, arguably her best run to date. In eighth place Bethan Knights (Shayla Houlihan) rounded out an outstanding day for the three British ladies in action.

In the men’s race, Alex Short (Philip O’Dell) produced another stellar performance in fourth to qualify for the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute next weekend.

NCAA Division I South Central Regional Championships, Arkansas, 11 November

On home turf Alex George (Paul de-Camps) was a commendable fifth, whilst Holly Archer (Gordon Palmer) was 14th in the women’s race.
