World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold, Karlsruhe, Germany, 28 January

Emily Borthwick (Wigan and District) cleared a then equal world lead in the women’s high jump in Germany, jumping 1.91m to share the win with Imke Onnen (GER).

There were victories for the Brits elsewhere with Elliot Giles (Jon Bigg, Birchfield) taking the men’s 800m. Giles finished narrowly ahead of Sweden’s Andreas Kramer, clocking 1:46.78.

In the men’s 60m hurdles, David King (Tim O’Neil, City of Plymouth) was seventh and Andrew Pozzi (Stratford-upon-Avon) eighth in 7.73 and 7.75 respectively.

Olympic medallist Josh Kerr (Danny Mackey, Edinburgh) finished second in the Wanamaker Mile event as he clocked a PB of 3:52.27, to finish behind Australia’s Ollie Hoare who ran 3:50.83.

Elsewhere, European Cross champion Charles Hicks (Shaftesbury Barnet) posted a personal best over 3000m indoors, posting a time of 7:59.02 for 12th place, with compatriot James West (Ben Thomas, Tonbridge) one place behind in 7:59.96.

Boston University John Thomas Terrier Classic, USA 30 January

Patrick Dever (Preston) ran an indoor personal best of 7:43.57 over 3000m, comfortably inside the World Indoors qualifying standard, to win the race in Boston. Compatriots Jamaine Coleman (Tim Schwartz, Preston) and Euan Makepeace (Sonia McGeorge, Charnwood) also ran inside the 7:50, recording PB times of 7:44.65 and 7:46.92 respectively.

Neil Gourley (Ben Thomas) opened his 2022 campaign with a World Indoors qualifying standard of 7:48.94 over 3000m, which was also a personal best for the Giffnock North athlete.

Northern Athletics Cross Country Championships, Pontefract, 29 January

Hugo Milner (Derby) and Eleanor Bolton (Ribble Valley Harriers) ran out as winners of the senior titles at the Northern Championships in Pontefract.

Milner continued his strong winter cross country form as he finished ahead of Nigel Martin (Sale Harriers Manchester) and Daniel Haworth (Matlock) who rounded up the podium positions.

For Bolton, she finished six seconds ahead of Sophie Tarver (Wirral) who took the silver, while Olympic Triathlon champion Georgia Taylor-Brown (Paul Roden, Sale Harriers Manchester) was third, narrowly ahead of Lauren Heyes (Paul Roden, Hallamshire).

Joshua Dickinson (Andrew Henderson, Leeds City) and Abbey Brooke (Wakefield) sealed the junior men’s and women’s titles respectively.

Midlands Counties Cross Country Championships, Berry Hill Park, 29 January

Taking place at the Berry Hill Park course in Mansfield, Douglas Musson (Luke Gunn, Notts) and Katie Holt (Sale Harriers Manchester) secured the 2022 Midlands titles.

Holt won by a considerable margin to seal the regional crown, with Lily Partridge (Birchfield) and Kate Maltby (Christopher Frapwell, Bristol & West) taking silver and bronze in the senior women’s race.

Musson was ten seconds ahead of Jack Gray (Mark Vile, Cambridge & Coleridge) in the end, with Jack Millar (David Bedwell, Bristol & West) not far behind for the bronze.

Ethan O’Shea (Dean Miller, Charnwood) and Rosie Hamilton-James (Dean Miller, Westbury) were the winners of the junior races in Mansfield.

South of England AA Cross Country Championships, Beckenham, 29 January

After a superb cross country season to date, Jess Gibbon (Reading) won the senior women’s South of England Championships title in Beckenham, while Andy Coley-Maud (allison Benton, Guildford & Godalming) won the senior men’s contest.

Gibbons dominated the senior women’s race as she finished just under a minute ahead of Niamh Brown (Aldershot Farnham & District) who claimed the silver medal. Beth Hawling (London Heathside) pipped Sarah Astin (Geoff Watkin, Belgrave) the bronze medal.

Coley-Maud secured a big win with Ben Alcock (Bedford and County) and Alexander Teuten (Roderick Lock, Southampton) battling well for silver and bronze respectively.

The junior titles went to Harriet Bloor (David Leach, Lewes) and Harry Brodie (Bedford and County).
