Away from the SPAR British Athletics Indoor Championships (Day One & Day Two), there was plenty of action to keep your eyes on.

BUCS Indoor Championships, Sheffield, 16-18 February

On the first day of competition in Sheffield, Adam Thomas (coach: Leon Baptiste) and Hannah Brier (Steve Fudge) ensured the BUCS 60m titles travelled back to Loughborough University, setting the tone as the team in purple topped both the men’s and women’s standings at the end of the weekend. Both Thomas and Brier were just one hundredth outside their season’s bests as they stopped the clock in 6.75 and 7.40 respectively.

In the sprint hurdles Emma Nwofor (Linford Christie) was in fine form, moving to fifth on the Power of 10 rankings with her 8.27 winning run, also a personal best. Nwofor also won the high jump on the final day of action with a 1.75m clearance.

In exciting 3,000m races, Emily Hosker-Thornhill (Mick Woods) just got the better of Hannah Nuttall (John Nuttall) and Jo Hickmann Dunne (Bill Foster) thanks to a 9.23.73 run, whilst Mahamed Mahamed (Peter Haynes) edged out Paulos Surafel (Craig Winrow) in the men’s race by less than half a second.

Armagh International Road Races, Armagh, Northern Ireland, 15 February

On a brilliant night of endurance running in small Northern Irish city of Armagh, Laura Weightman (Steve Cram) defended her 3km title, whilst Sam Stabler (Ron Denmark) won the men’s 5km race as an astonishing 94 athletes broke 15 minutes.

For Stabler it was a welcome return to form having been injured since his GB debut at the European Cross Country Championships in December. In a closely fought race that was only decided on the last 1km lap around the mall in the city centre, previous winner Charlie Hulson struck for home and looked like he might have won it before Stabler made a late charge to cross the line in 13.59, one second ahead of his Welsh counterpart.

Not letting the cold conditions faze her, defending champion Weightman donned a long sleeve top under her vest as she tested her fitness after a training camp in South Africa. Unlike last year where she headed the race throughout, she chose to keep off Jess Judd (Mick Judd), only kicking away down the lengthy 500m home straight to break the tape in 8.59, exactly the same as her winning time 12 months ago. Judd also ran a great race, second in 9.03, with Verity Ockenden (Tony Houchin) rounding out the podium with a 9.14 clocking.

Lee Valley Middle Distance Open, London, 14 February

T20 athlete Steve Morris (James Thie) made the long journey East from his base in Cardiff well worth it as he smashed his own British 800m record with 1:55.76 run on the boards at Lee Valley.
