WEEKEND UPDATE
Carlsbad 5k, San Diego, California, USA, 25 March
Emelia Gorecka (Chris Thompson) produced a sublime run to win this fast 5km road race on the west coast of America. After a strong first half of the winter season, Gorecka opted to go back into a hard racing block, but has returned in great form. She’ll now head to altitude ahead of the summer season.

Pac-12 vs Big Ten Invitational, Arizona, USA, 23-24 March
After breaking the British junior hammer record last weekend Jake Norris (Paul Dickenson) added a stunning two metres to that effort with a 72.70m throw in America, where he is studying at Louisiana State University. That effort is truly world class as a junior and puts him in the top 20 on the senior UK all-time list at this early point in the season.
IAAF World Half Marathon Championships, Valencia, Spain, 24 March
Charlotte Purdue (Nic Bideau) put in a captain’s effort as she finished 21st to lead the British women’s team to seventh.
Brisbane Grand Prix, Brisbane, Australia, 22 March
A strong contingent of athletes from the home nations stepped up their preparations ahead of next month’s Commonwealth Games as they took to the track for the Brisbane Grand Prix.
Home Countries International Cross Country, Nottingham, 24 March
Adam Hickey (Eamonn Martin) and Elle Vernon (David Turnbull) were victorious in the final cross country races of the 2017/18 season both winning convincingly on a challenging Wollaton Park course. Racing over 10km, Hickey asserted his authority to get the better of teammate Carl Avery (Lindsay Dunn), who has enjoyed a fine breakthrough winter, by some 45 seconds, with Andrew Douglas (Sophie Dunnett) third.
It was a similar story in the senior women’s race as Vernon won by the same margin, leading home an English one-two-three, with Beth Hawling second and Charlotte Christensen rounding out the podium. John Miller and Julia Paternain took the junior races, meaning England won all four races and each of the team titles.
Liverpool Half Marathon, Liverpool, 25 March
Jonny Mellor (Steve Vernon) produced an impressive solo effort over 13.1 miles, winning in 63:35 minutes in his home city, four minutes clear of his nearest rival, suggesting his preparations for the London Marathon are going well.
Northern Road Relays, Birkenhead, 25 March
Lincoln Wellington continued their fine winter as they wrapped up the Northern 12 stage title on the roads, getting the better of Salford and Stockport who took the minor medals. Returning from injury Ross Millington (Steve Vernon) was quickest long leg of the day, while 800m man James Bowness (William Parker) was quickest of the short legs. The women’s six stage was a much clearer cut affair, Leeds City leading from leg two and eventually forging a winning margin of almost two minutes.
Scottish National Road Relays, Livingstone, 25 March
There were a pair of new winners north of the border as Corstorphine AAC and Fife AC won the men’s and women’s races respectively, both for the first time in their club’s history. Edinburgh club Corstorphine got the better on Central AC by over a minute, Calum McKenzie, second at the Home International the previous day, bringing it home. Fife have been second at this event on a number of occasions but finally got their names on the trophy with a great team effort.
