WEEKEND UPDATE

While British athletes were putting their final touches to their Commonwealth Games preparations, there were a number of excellent performances around the world.

Stanford Invitational, California, 30 March

Nick Miller (Tore Gustafsson) broke the British hammer record with a phenomenal season opening throw of 78.29m at the Stanford Invitational. His series of throws were all particularly strong with three other marks passing 76m. His performance was enough to win the event ahead of fellow Brit Taylor Campbell, who impressed with a best of 70.42m.

In the women’s hammer, Olympic bronze medallist Sophie Hitchon (Tore Gustafsson) threw 71.41m to take victory with one of her best ever season openers.

Alice Wright (Joe Franklin) ran superbly over 10,000m to lower her personal best by 15 seconds to 32:15.73, finishing in fourth place. She shot straight to the top of the early season Power of 10 rankings and secured the European Championships qualifying mark in the process. In the men’s 10,000m there was a PB of 29:10.33 for Jack Rowe (Mick Woods).

Jamaine Coleman (Andy Bibby) ran well in the men’s 3000m steeplechase for a time of 8:42.21.

International Invitational Meet, Sippy Downs, Australia, 31 March

British pole vault record holder Holly Bradshaw (Scott Simpson) got her outdoor season underway with a stunning victory, clearing a best height of 4.70m.

Bradshaw’s British teammates athletes also finished second and third in the pole vault with Molly Caudery (Scott Caudery), clearing 4.50m, securing a new British Junior record in the process, with Sally Peake (Simpson), clearing 4.40m.

With the Commonwealth Games looming, British duo Lynsey Sharp (Terrence Mahon) and Anyika Onoura (Rana Reider) both stepped up their preparation by taking impressive wins.

Sharp secured victory in the 800m in 2:03.50s and Onoura completed the double of the 200m and 400m in 23.84 and 52.62 respectively.

Para-athletes James Arnott (Ryan Freckleton) and Rhys Jones (Christian Malcolm) also impressed, running the 100m in 11.75 and 12.27 respectively.
