WEEKEND UPDATE - 4-6 MARCH

World Race Walking Team Championships, Muscat, Oman, 4-5 March

In the women’s 20km race on Friday, Bethan Davies (Andi Drake, Cardiff) recorded a season best of 1:42.25 to cross the line in 18th position. At the halfway mark, the Welsh athlete went through in 27th place in 50:54 and gradually picked up positions during the second 10km to achieve the top 20 spot which was the best finish for a British woman in the 20km event in the Championships history.

Cameron Corbishley (Andi Drake, Medway & Maidstone) crossed the line in 40th in a time of 1:33:20 in the men’s 20km race. Unfortunately, Tom Bosworth (Andi Drake, Tonbridge) was forced to withdraw at the 17km mark with a back injury.

In the earlier 35km men’s race, Dominic King (George Nibre, Colchester) was disqualified shortly after 21km mark.

The Ten, San Juan Capistrano CA, USA, 6 March

Patrick Dever (Andy Bibby, Preston) moved to fifth on the UK all-time list over 10,000m, and Andrew Butchart (Central) broke the Scottish record in a fast and furious race in California.

Dever recorded a time of 27:23.88 for sixth in the race. The time was also well inside the World Championships qualifying standard (27:28:00) for Oregon in the summer.

Meanwhile Butchart broke Ian Stewart’s 45-year-old Scottish record with a time of 27:36.77 – he was 11th in the race.

World Indoor Tour Silver Meeting, Paris, 6 March

At the meeting in Paris, Harry Coppell (Scott Simpson, Wigan & District) cleared a season best of 5.67m which saw him finish sixth in the men’s pole vault competition.
