WEEKEND UPDATE

British Universities Outdoor Championships, Bedford, 5-7 May

On a glorious bank holiday weekend, Cameron Chalmers (coach: James Hillier) comfortably claimed his third consecutive BUCS title in a European Championships qualifying standard of 45.97, ahead of a field full of personal best times. In the women’s race, European Junior Championship 200m champion Maya Bruney (John Blackie) crossed the line a full second clear of Laviai Nielsen (Christine Bowmaker) to take the title.

In the sprints, Martin Popoola (Les Johnson) won a 100m and 200m double in 10.68 (-1.4m/s) and 21.13 (-1.6) respectively, whilst Diani Walker (Lloyd Cowan) took the women’s 100m in 11.61 (-0.5).

In the distance events Mari Smith (Bud Baldaro) was perhaps the big winner as she took the women’s 800m title, beating Mhairi Hendry (William Parker) in a 2:03.71 personal best. True to form Jess Judd (Mick Judd) took the women’s 5,000m title for Loughborough University in 16:10.81, whilst Allan Smith (Bryan Roy) did the same in the high jump, the Edinburgh Napier student clearing 2.18m to beat Chris Kandu (John Herbert).

Air Force Twilight Open, Colorado Springs, USA, 4 May

Thomas Staines clocked a personal best over 400m to secure a European Championships qualifying standard. His 45.98 run puts him fourth on the Power of 10 rankings at this early point in the season.

British Athletics League Division One, Eton, 5 May 

Deji Tobias (Simon Duberley) made a great start to his summer season with a 10.32 (1.0) run over 100m, the highlight of the opening weekend of BAL action.

British Athletics League Premiership, Leigh, 5 May

Stephen Morris (James Thie) ran his fastest ever 3000m outdoors, clocking 8:44.02 for Cardiff AC. The T20 athlete has run five seconds quicker indoors but the time will have provided confidence to the Welshman who will concentrate on the 800m and 1500m over the summer season.

Newham & Essex Beagles Open, Plaistow,  6 May 

A +2.2m/s tailwind denied Dom Ashwell what would have been an impressive 100m personal best as he took the win in 10.28, which bodes extremely well for the U20 athlete. In the same race Theo Etienne (Ryan Freckleton) produced a 10.29 run.

L’Hospitalet Para Athletics, Barcelona, 6 May

Paul Blake (Rob Ellchuk) opened his 2018 season in Spain, recording a time of 57.27 over 400m. Elsehwere, Jack Gladman (Andy Coleman) was fifth in the ambulant 1500m in 4:44.05.
