WEEKEND UPDATE

Aside from the entertaining England Athletics U20 / U23 Championships (Day one & Day two) and the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Paris, there was plenty to catch up on this weekend.

 

European Athletics Classic Meeting, Marseille, France, 16 June

Andrew Osagie (Mark Rowland) and Perri Shakes-Drayton (Chris Zah) continued their comebacks from injury with impressive runs in France, the latter running 51.97 to take second in the women’s 400m, her fastest time since 2013. Osagie was also second in the 800m, crossing the line in 1.45.79, with Elliot Giles (Jon Bigg) one second back in fourth.

Elsewhere Charles Da’Vall Grice (Bigg) won the men’s 1500m in 3.36.48, with Jake Wightman (Geoff Wightman) third in 3.37.04, whilst Shelayna Oskan-Clarke (Bigg) was fifth in the women’s 800m in 2.02.87. Steph Twell (Wightman) was fourth in the 5,000m in 15.38.68, Seb Rodger (Stephen King) fifth in the 400mH in 49.77.

In the field Shara Proctor (Rana Reider) and Abigail Irozuru (Tom Cullen) were third and fifth in the long jump with marks of 6.73m (0.9) and 6.60m (1.2) respectively, the latter an impressive season’s best on her comeback from injury to equal the European Championship qualifying standard.

Internationales Soundtrack-Meeting, Tübingen, Germany, 16-17 June

Ashleigh Nelson (Michael Afilaka) competed in and won her first 100m of the season, the former European bronze medallist stopping the clock at 11.46 (0.0) with training partner Annie Tagoe (Afilaka) just five hundredths back in second. In the pole vault Adam Hague (Trevor Fox) cleared 5.60m, just shy of his personal best to bag second place.

In the women’s 400m Laviai Nielsen (Christine Bowmaker) was fourth in 52.70, whilst Adele Tracey (Craig Winrow) was second in the 800m in 2.00.46, a season’s best and inside the European Championship qualifying mark; Revee Walcott-Nolan won the B race in a big season’s best of 2.02.46.

Sticking with the middle-distance events, Rosie Clark (David Harmer) set a 4.07.69 personal best for seventh in the 1500m, while Robbie Fitzgibbon (Jon Bigg) was fifth in the men’s race in a 3.39.37 season’s best.

Internationales Pader-Leichtathletik-Meeting, Paderborn, Germany, 16 June

There were victories for Greg Rutherford (Dan Pfaff) and Daryll Neita (Jonas Dodoo) over in Germany, Neita taking the 100m in a season’s best of 11.23 (0.3), Rutherford leaping 7.76 (-0.2).

Bayer-Classics, Leverkusen, Germany, 16 June

Chris Baker (Graham Ravenscroft) cleared a season’s best of 2.21m for fourth in the high jump, whilst Dan Bramble (Frank Attoh) went one better, third in the long jump with a best of 7.78m.

Citrus Meeting, Bern, Switzerland, 16 June

Amy Allcock (Glyn Hawkes) won the women’s 400m in a very solid 52.75, just 0.01 shy of her personal best, whilst Martyn Rooney (Graham Headman) won the men’s race in 46.32.

In the shorter sprints, Imani Lansiquot (Steve Fudge) was just outside her season’s best with an 11.30 winning run in the women’s 100m, into a 0.5m/s headwind.

IAAF Combined Events Challenge Meeting, Kladno, Czech Republic, 16-17 June

Jessica Taylor-Jemmett (Mike Holmes) was second as three of the female competitors recorded personal bests at the international meeting.

Taylor-Jemmett accumulated a points total of 5590 which was seasons best.

Ben Gregory (Aston Moore) was fourth with 7582, narrowly ahead of John Lane (Toni Minichiello) on 7545 points.

James Finney (Sam Stanislaus), Jack Andrew (Martin Brockman) and Elliot Thompson all achieved personal best points tallies – 7315, 7213 and 7191 respectively.

Brian Goodwin Memorial 10K, Pollok, 15 June

On a summer’s evening in Glasgow, Luke Traynor produced a sensational 10km performance to smash his personal best and move to second on the Power of 10 rankings behind Sir Mo Farah. In a solo time-trial the in-form road runner produced the third fastest time ever by Scot as he broke the tape in 28.31, almost a full minute quicker than he’s ever run before.

Podium 5k, Barnoldswick, 15 June

Richard Allen (Mick Woods) broke Tom Lancashire’s course record with a fine 14.05 winning run in Lancashire, whilst in the women’s race Scotland’s Mhairi Maclennan (John Lees) smashed her personal best, which was actually set enroute to a 33.28 personal best at the Highgate Harriers’ Night of the 10,000m PBs last month, as she crossed the line in 16.11.

BMC Gold Standard, Watford, 13 June

Spencer Thomas led a training group 1-2-3 in the 800m as he won in 1.48.69 ahead of Robbie Fitzgibbon and Charles D’Vall Grice (all Jon Bigg), whilst Katie Snowden (Rob Denmark) set a season’s best of 2.03.42 to win the women’s race.

Charnwood AC Open, Loughborough, 13 June

Double Paralympic champion Libby Clegg (Joe McDonnell) raced with guide Chris Clarke for the first time since the Rio final in 2016 last Wednesday, clocking 26.04 over 200m

Elsewhere Sophie Hahn (McDonnell) also ran over 200m, her time 27.26.

BMC Gold Standard, Trafford, 12 June

Jonny Mellor (Steve Vernon) returned to the track for the first time in three years to take victory over 3,000m in Manchester, edging out Tom Lancashire (Steve Cram) 8.04.39 to 8.05.24, whilst in seventh double Paralympic medallist David Devine (Anthony Clark) knocked four seconds off his personal best running 8.18.47.

A name for the future is perhaps Falkirk Victoria’s Kane Elliott (Williams Sharp) who demolished the Scottish under 17 1500m record with 3:46.84 run, taking a massive five and a half seconds off the old record.
