Weekend update
BWAA Grand Prix, Stoke Mandeville, 14-15 July
There were a trio of solid performances by Hannah Cockroft (coach: Jenni Banks) this weekend in Stoke Mandeville, as she gears up for the Muller Anniversary Games and WPA European Championships in the coming weeks.
Over 800m, she recorded 1:58.52 while over 400m, she pushed to a time of 58.17, her third best time of the year. Next week she will compete in the T34 100m inside the London Stadium, and she warmed up for that with a clocking of 17.88 (-0.8 m/s), and a third victory.
Elsewhere there was an entertaining T54 1500m race with Stockport’s Nathan Maguire (Ste Hoskins) taking the victory. He moved away from Dillon Labrooy (Jenny Archer) in the closing stages, taking it in 1:35.96 from 1:36.60. Commonwealth marathon silver medallist JohnBoy Smith (Archer) continued his return to the track distances in third place in 1:38.45.
Maguire also recorded 47.53 over 400m, his fastest time in the UK this season, coming close to his impressive set of results in Nottwil back in June.
Labrooy meanwhile set significant PBs in the 400m and 800m (48.70 and 1:36.60), while he later won the T54 1500m.
World T34 800m bronze medallist Isaac Towers (Pete Wyman / Jenni Banks) showed a return to form in only, clocking 53.04 over 400m
English Schools’ Championships, Birmingham, 13-14 July
The senior boy’s 110m hurdles was perhaps the event of the 2018 English Schools’ Track and Field Championships, with Tade Ojora setting a massive 13.54 (-0.1m/s) personal best in the heats. However, it was European U18 Champion Sam Bennett (Steven Surety) who prevailed in the final, a time of 13.63 (1.3) getting the better of Ojora by 0.11 of a second.
European U18 finalist Natasha Harrison (Pete Torrance) took the senior girl’s 400m title in a personal best and Championship Best Performance of 53.67, her first time under 54 seconds, almost a second off the best time she ran in Hungary. In the senior boy’s equivalent, Gyor silver medallist Ethan Brown (Lloyd Cowan) was another impressive winner in 47.92.
In the two lap rac, Oliver Dustin (Graeme Mason) went sub 1.50 for the first time to win the senior boy’s race in 1.49.74, whilst Khahisa Mhlanga (Mick Judd) defended her title in the senior women’s race.
In the field, Tom Hewson produced a stunning 69.13m personal best to win the senior boy’s javelin.
Shandell Taylor (Trevor Wells) soared to a massive 7.78m (1.7) personal best to win the long jump, whilst Daniel James Thomas (Judy Oakes) threw a personal best of 17.85m with the 6kg implement to win the senior boy’s shot-put title.
International Throwing Competition, Leiria, Portugal, 14-15 July
Having improved her season’s best on day one, Scot Kirsty Law (Duquemin) went even further on day two with a 56.37m effort in the discus, pipped at the post by Eden Francis (Glenys Morton) who also produced a SB of 56.49m; both throwing European qualification standards.
Chris Bennett (Mick Jones) led a strong British trio in the men’s hammer out in Portugal, launching the 7.26kg implement out to 73.32m to finish second, with Taylor Campbell (John Pearson) and Mark Dry fifth and sixth with 70.49m and 70.41m respectively.
In the discus, U23 George Armstrong (Zane Duquemin) improved his lifetime best with a 57.33m throw on day two, a metre further than he’s ever thrown before.
U23 Shadine Duquemin (Duquemin) just missed out on her personal best with a 53.26m effort, whilst on day one Dan Greaves (self-coached) warmed up for next month’s WPA European Championships with a season’s best of 58.18m.
Welsh Championships, Cardiff – 14 July
Paralympic F20 shot put bronze medallist recorded a massive personal best at the Welsh Championships, improving to 13.70m from her previous best of 13.27m set earlier this year.
British 10km, Westminster, London, 15 July
Welshman Dewi Griffiths (Kevin Evans) returned to action for the first time since February to win the British 10km road race title on the streets of London, breaking the tape in 29.41. That brought him home nine seconds clear of runner-up Matt Sharp, with Ian Kimpton bagging bronze.
In the women’s race it was Rachel Felton (Christopher Frapwell) who took the title with a 34.56 effort.
Trofeo Ottavio Missoni, Lignano Sabbiadoro, Italy, 11 July
Italy produced the perfect weather for some strong British performances on Wednesday evening, Alex Bell (Andrew Henderson) leading the way with victory in the women’s 800m in 2.00.13. Neil Gourley (Ben Thomas) also produced a winning run in the men’s 1500m, a special night for the Scot as he also revised his lifetime best with a 3.36.54 run. Gourley’s compatriot Jemma Reekie (Andy Young) continued her fine 2018 with fifth in the women’s race in 4.10.25, just a second shy of her personal best, whilst Hannah England (Bud Baldaro) was ninth in 4.12.92.
There was also a season’s best of 13.54 (-0.3) for Cindy Ofili as she continues her recovery from an achilles injury sustained last year.
BMC Gold Standard Races, Watford, 11 July
Laura Weightman (Steve Cram) made the most of the splendid British summer as she went within six tenths of second of her 800m personal best, winning in 2.02.41, with Mari Smith (Bud Baldaro) and Katie Snowden (Rob Denmark) in close contention, the former running a personal best of 2.02.64. In the men’s 1500m Phil Sesemann (Henderson) lowered his personal best to 3.40.93 as he beat a strong domestic field.
Spitzen Leichtathletik, Lucerne, Switzerland, 9 Jul 18
Sprint hurdler David King (James Hillier) backed up his performance at the Müller British Athletics Championships with a season’s best of 13.57 (1.2) out in Switzerland to strengthen his grip of second on the Power of 10 rankings.
King’s training partner, Northern Irishman Leon Reid (Hillier) was also fourth, running 20.40 (0.9) in the 200m, whilst Delano Williams was fourth in the B race in 20.55 (0.2). Guy Learmonth (Henry Gray) was also in action, fifth in the 800m in 1.46.87.
