WEEKEND UPDATE

BMC Grand Prix, Stretford, 18 August

Jess Judd (coach: Mick Judd) finally started to show the kind of form she is capable of with an impressive 1500m victory in 4:07.50, winning by over two seconds in a season’s best time. This backs up her strong run over 5,000m last weekend where she clocked 15:37.23.

Second in the race this weekend was Amy Griffiths (Rob Denmark), who revised her lifetime best with a 4:09.71 performance, whilst there was also a personal best of 4:15.42 for Kate Avery in fourth. In the men’s 1500m, James Gormley (John Wood) set a season’s best as he finished second in 3:42.76, THE first Brit home, whilst Alex Bell (Andrew Henderson) won the women’s 800m A-race by almost five seconds in 2:01.64.

Jake Shelley (David Chalfen) edged out Jack Crabtree (Alex Hains) in the men’s 5,000m, the pair setting a season’s best of 14:04.42 and a personal best of 14:04.73 respectively. Katie Ingle (Margaret Riley) won a rarely contested women’s 1500m steeplechase in 4:45.13, a personal best, whilst Louise Webb (Luke Gunn) continued her return from injury to finish second in 4:48.71.

Göteborg GP, Gothenburg, Sweden, 18 August

Hannah England (Bud Baldaro) produced the kind of run that suggested she could be on the way back to her very best as she clocked 2:02.89 out in Sweden, finishing ahead of  Shelayna Oskan-Clarke (Jon Bigg). Rabah Yousif (Carol Williams) won the men’s 400m in 45.92, whilst Laviai Nielsen (Christine Bowmaker) and Zoey Clark (Eddie McKenna) were fourth and fifth in the women’s race in 52.46 and 52.49 respectively.

Memoriał Wiesława Maniaka, Szczecin, Poland, 15 August

Shannon Hylton (Ryan Freckleton) produced a pair of strong runs over 100m and 200m, finishing just outside her personal bests in both events. Third in the 100m, Hylton ran 11.47 (0.3m/s), which is just 0.03 down on her personal best set this year, whilst in the 200m she was second in 22.95 (0.5).

There were also a further trio of third places finishes; Meghan Beesley (Michael Baker) running 55.52 in the 400mH, Anyika Onoura (Rana Reider) 52.29 in the 400m flat and Adelle Tracey (Craig Winrow) crossing the line in 2.01.34 in the 800m.

Trafford AC Grand Prix Open, Stretford, 14 August

The two stand out performances on Tuesday night in Manchester came from female athletes running in mixed races, Alex Bell (Andrew Henderson) and Francesca Brint (Paul Roden) impressing over 800m. Bell crossed the line in 2:00.29, her fourth fastest time ever, whilst junior Brint, who was 10th over 1500m at the World Junior Championships this summer, produced a personal best of 2.04.71, almost a second quicker than she’s ever gone before.
