WEEKEND UPDATE
Valencia Half Marathon, 28 October
As the men’s half marathon world record was broken by Kenya’s Abraham Kiptum, taking five seconds off the previous best to clock 58.18, Callum Hawkins (Robert Hawkins, Kilbarchan)ran his third fastest time of his career in 61:00. He was the first European athlete across the line in 16th position.
Jedburgh 10km, 28 October
Sammi Kinghorn (Ian Mirfin, Red Star) and Ben Rowlings (Mirfin, Coventry) sealed victory at the Jedburgh 10km this weekend. Kinghorn, who is continuing her return to racing after taking some time off competition during the summer, produced a solid performance, crossing the line in 25.21. For Rowlings, he sealed the win in the men’s race in 24.03.
Scottish Cross Country Relays, Cumbernauld, 28 October
The Edinburgh Uni Hare and Hounds team made it a hat-trick of successes at Cumbernauld in the senior women’s race with the team of Holly Page (Jason Marchant), Rebecca Johnstone, Steph Pennycook (John Lees) and Anna MacFadyen guiding them to victory.
Alastair Hay led home Central AC to their fourth senior’s men’s win in seven years at the Lindsays National XC Relays. Hay took on the final leg after the efforts of Matthew Stirling, Cameron Milne and Scott Green put them in contention for that win.
River Thames Half Marathon, 28 October
After a busy few weeks including getting married, and some notable performances on the road, Steph Twell (Geoff Wightman, Aldershot Farnham & District) was back at it this weekend, finishing third overall in the half marathon alongside the Thames. This time she stopped the clock at 74:01.
Kent League, Tonbridge, 27 October
Abel Tsegay (Invicta East Kent, Peter Mullervy) just got the better of Max Nicholls (Tonbridge, Peter Brenchley) – who has enjoyed a very good year over the mountain running terrain during 2018 – by ten seconds. Sian Robertson (Tonbridge) won the senior women’s equivalent.
Southland Conference Championships, Lake Charles, LA, 26 October 2018
Jamie Cook (Tony Houchin, Central / Lamar Uni) sealed victory in the States as he won in the second race of his cross-country season. He was narrowly ahead of fellow Briton Jordan Rowe (Houchin, Thames Valley / Lamar Uni).
In the women’s race, the leading British athlete was Katy Buckley (Houchin, Bury / Lamar Uni).
MAAC Championships, Latham, NY, 27 October
It was a narrow finish to senior men’s race with Liam Dee (Ricardo Santos, Shaftesbury Barnet / Iona College) edging out Jamie Dee (Ricardo Santos, Shaftesbury Barnet / Iona College) by one second to claim victory in Latham. Helena Keenan (Bill Boyd, Corby / Iona College) was 11th in the women’s race.
Ivy League Championships, Priceton, NJ, 27 October
Hugo Milner (Derby / Harvard Uni) produced a fantastic display to place third overall in Princeton with fellow Briton William Battershill (Erme Valley / Harvard Uni) just outside the top ten in 12th.
West Coast Championships, Provo, Utah, 27 October
The top British finish in Utah was Christopher Olley (Mark Hookway, Tonbridge / San Francisco Uni) who has been a regular on British junior teams over the last few years. He was sixth in this one, while Megan Bird (Paul Roden, Sale Harriers Manchester / San Francisco Uni) was the first female Brit across the line in 11th position.
