WEEKEND UPDATE
Cross Internacional de Atapuerca, Burgos, Spain, 11 November
Charlotte Arter (coach: Chris Jones ; club: Cardiff) and Andy Vernon (Nic Bideau; Aldershot, Farnham & District were both on great form out in Spain, finishing ninth and 12th respectively in extremely high quality international fields. Vernon was the first non-African finisher, just 14 seconds off a top eight finish. Arter formed part of the Welsh team, which also featured Jenni Nesbitt (David Walker; Worcester) who was 20th, just 11 seconds and five places behind Nicole Taylor (Richard Owen; Tonbridge) who was in action for England.
In the junior races Jake Heyward (James Thie; Cardiff) continued his dominance with victory from England’s Rory Leonard (Morpeth), whilst in the women’s equivalent Zoe Wassell (Christopher Frapwell; Bristol & West) was the best placed Brit thanks to her podium finish in third.

Scottish National Short Course XC Championships, Lanark, 10 November
Using all of her track speed after a breakthrough season at senior level over 1500m, Jemma Reekie (Andy Young; Kilbarchan) followed in the footsteps of training partner Laura Muir to win the Scottish short-course title by two seconds from Morag Millar (Central) nee MacLarty, with Steph Pennycook (John Lees; Fife) rounding out the podium and guiding Edinburgh University to the team title.
In the men’s race it was another Andy Young youngster who broke the tape, Sol Sweeney (Perth Strathtay) getting the better of the in-form Adam Craig (Bruce Scott; Edinburgh AC) by four seconds, with Michael Ferguson (Ken Hogg; Aberdeen) taking bronze. Craig’s Inverclyde took the team title.
Alton Sports Hampshire League, Aldershot, 10 November
Choosing to bypass the British Athletics Cross Challenge and stay at home in Aldershot, AFD duo Emily Hosker-Thornhill and Louise Small (both Mick Woods) secured a one-two finish, albeit the former was a minute clear of her training partner showing just what form she is in ahead of the European Cross Country trials in two weeks’ time.

Birmingham & District Cross Country League, Cheltenham, 10 November
The Birmingham League men’s race turned out to be a hotly contested affair, Loughborough University’s Patrick Dever (Andy Bibby; Preston) continuing his return from injury with a five second victory from Birchfield’s Kadar Abdullahi (Idris Hamud) and his University teammate Jamie Williamson (George Gandy; Springburn).
Midlands Women’s League, Northbrook, 10 November
Running for her new University team, Amelia Quirk (Mick Woods; Bracknell AC) once again showed good form, backing up her quick leg at the English National Cross Country Relays last weekend with a clear win over the 6km distance.

NCAA Regional Championships, USA, 9 November
Jamie Crowe (Tony Houchin; Central) was the standout British performer at the regional meetings taking place across America on Friday, the Lamar student-athlete winning the South Central race to book his place at the NCAA Championships, which take place next Saturday. Teammate Jordan Rowe (Houchin; Thames Valley) also finished seventh, meaning both men qualified as individuals, with the majority of spots taken up by the athletes from teams who qualify.
In the West, Jack Rowe (Mick Woods; AFD) and Chris Olley (Mark Hookway; Tonbridge) were fifth and ninth respectively, but only Rowe did enough for a spot at the National meeting. In the North East, Hugo Milner (Derby) finished a terrific fifth to qualify for the race in Wisconsin, but he’ll be joined by Jamie and Liam Dee (Ricardo Santos; Shaftesbury Barnet) who, in finishing ninth and 26th respectively, ensured Iona qualified as a team. In the women’s race, Georgia Fear (Highgate) was 14th and will be in action on Saturday with her Dartmouth team.
In the Mountain Region, Ryan Forsyth was 10th and part of the Colorado team who’ll be one of the favourites for victory next weekend. The final individual qualifier was Euan Makepeace (Matt Roe; Charnwood), the Butler athlete 13th in the Great Lakes Region.
