Weekend Update

Start Fitness Serpentine New Year’s Day 10K, London, 1st January

Jonny Hay (coach: Mick Woods) ensured he will top at least one Power of 10 ranking in 2017 as he took victory in Hyde Park in 30.11. Surprisingly this was a personal best for the Aldershot, Farnham and District man, who dragged James McMurray (Deborah Steer) and Bradley Goater to 30.31 and 30.40 personal best’s respectively. Runner turned triathlete Emma Pallant (Michelle Dillon) was the first lady home in 35.04.

BOclassic 10K, Bolzano, Italy, 31 December 2016

Steph Twell (Woods) finished her year on high as she took fourth place in this iconic New Year’s Eve race in the Italian town of Bolzano. Boasting elite fields with leading African athletes to the fore, Twell clocked 16.28 for the challenging 5km course, just 10 seconds down on Etenesh Diro and a podium place. Chasing her home all the way was Eli Kirk (Steve Vernon) who finished an impressive fifth in 16.32, with Lauren Howarth (Vernon) seventh in 17.05.

In the men’s race over 10 kilometres, Jonny Mellor (Vernon) was eighth in 30.00, a good effort considering winner Muktar Edris only broke the tape in 28.52. Mellor’s Team New Balance Manchester teammate Andrew Heyes (Vernon) was 11th in 30.18.

Ribble Valley 10km, Clitheroe, 27 December 2016

On a cold but still Lancashire morning, perfect for fast times, Marc Scott (Steve Gulley) was a runaway winner in this annual December 10km. Revising his personal best by some 45 seconds, Scott was almost 30 seconds clear of his nearest challenger as he stopped the clock at 29.33 to end the year 19th on the British rankings.

Chris Farrell backed up his 29.51 personal best at Telford 10km three weeks earlier with second place in 29.59, the same time as third place finisher Richard Allen, who went over a minute quicker than he has before. In the women’s race local girl Emily Japp () of Blackpool, Wyra & Fylde also revised her lifetime best by over a minute as she took victory in 34.35.

New York Road Runners Midnight Run, New York, 31 December 2016

Andy Vernon (Nic Bideau) brought in the New Year with victory in the US capital ahead of a near 5000-strong field. Following the sound of the horn on the stroke of midnight, the 2016 Olympian powered through the 4 mile course to break the tape in 18.27, with compatriot Luke Gunn (Bud Baldaro) clocking 19.53 for 8th . Tasha Vernon (Mick Woods) was the fifth woman over the line and 23rd overall with 23:21, with Hannah England (Bud Baldaro) one place further back as the sixth female finisher in 23.59 (27th overall).

Metaswitch Games, Lee Valley, 2 January 2017

Reece Prescod (Jonas Tawiah-Dodoo) started off his year with a bang as he claimed victory in the 60m in 6.67, while hurdler Khai Riley-Laborde won the 60m hurdles in 7.80.
