Bauhaus Galan Meeting, Stockholm, 28 January

Richard Kilty (coach: Michael Khmel) produced a European ranking topping performance on his opening run of the season as he took 60m victory in 6.57. That performance bodes well as he gears up to defend his European title in Belgrade at the start of March.

In the women’s race Dina Asher-Smith (John Blackie) won by almost two tenths of a second, her 7.23 also a Power of 10 topping performance.

Welsh Athletics Indoor Championships, Cardiff, 28-39 January

Andrew Pozzi (Benke Blomkvist) opened his season in some style as he produced a 7.56 world lead in the 60mH, edging out training partner David Omoregie (Blomkvist) in the final, who produced his second personal best of the year with 7.63.

There was also a championship best performance for Sally Peake (Scott Simpson) as she won the pole vault.

Paralympic F42 Shot Put champion Aled Davies (Ryan Spencer-Jones) won his first senior Welsh title with an indoor personal best with the heavier 7.26kg shot. The mark of 14.95m saw him comfortably take the title and stands him in a good place as he seeks a defence of his F42 shot and discus titles at the World Para Athletics Championships this summer.

Steve Morris (James Thie) continued his excellent indoor form, setting a season’s best of 1:56.20 and a Welsh national record over 800m to earn a bronze medal at the championships, his first ever at the event.

New Balance Indoor Grand Prix, Massachusetts, USA, 28 January

Andrew Butchart (Derek Easton) continued to elevate his status in world athletics as he finished second in a truly world class 3000m field and broke the Scottish record by seven seconds. Rio 2016 5,000m silver medallist Paul Chelimo took the spoils in 7:42.39, but he was pushed extremely hard by the Scot, who was second in a personal best time of 7.42.97. Butchart finished ahead of the likes of Hagos Gebrhiwet and Dejen Gebremeskel, both also Olympic medallists.

There was 60m victory for Harry Aikines-Aryeetey (Benke Blomkvist), his chest ensuring he was the victor as a photofinish was needed to separate him from Zhenye Xie, as they both posted 6.66. In the men’s mile Jake Wightman (Geoff Wightman) was a very credible third in 3.57.24, only losing out to Olympic champion Matt Centrowitz and Kenyan Vincent Kibet.

Lynsey Sharp (Rana Reider) kick-started her season with a 2.02.88 clocking for third in the women’s 800m, whilst Kate Maltby (Christopher Frapwell) once again revised her 3000m lifetime best with a 9:00.81 clocking in seventh.

Indoor Track & Field Vienna, Austria, 28 January

Eilidh Doyle (Malcolm Arnold) produced a fine run over 400m, winning in an impressive 51.86 European lead, not far outside her lifetime best. Chasing her hard all the way was Laviai Nielsen (Frank Adams) who also clocked a season’s best of 52.68, inside the European Indoors qualifying time. It was a close affair in the men’s equivalent as Seb Rodger (Stephen King) eventually got the better of Jarryd Dunn (Keith Holt), the pair running 46.98 and 47.30 respectively.

Kyle de Escofet (Andy Paul) twice ran 6.66 to win the 60m, whilst Rachel Miller (Gary Telfer) ran a 7.31 personal best to win the women’s.

After an injury disrupted 2016 Guy Learmonth (Henry Gray) looked back to his best as he won the 800m in 1.47.20, and there was a British one-two in the long jump, with Dan Gardiner (John Crotty) getting the better of Julian Reid (Aston Moore), 7.74 to 7.44. Also in the field Scott Lincoln (Paul Wilson) and Rachel Wallader won the men’s and women’s shot put respectively with marks of 18.70m and 17.18m.

London Senior & U20 Games, Lee Valley, 28-29 January

In the second section of men’s 60m races, Andrew Robertson (Sam Robertson) clocked a season’s best of 6.60 – a Euro Indoors qualifying time – to go second on the Power of 10 rankings. He got the better of Theo Etienne (Ryan Freckleton) and Dwain Chambers, who ran 6.63 and 6.67 respectively, with Samuel Osewa (Leon Baptiste) fourth in a new personal best of 6.68.

In the women’s event Shannon Hylton (Freckleton) opened her 2017 campaign with a personal best of 7.42, before lowering in by one hundredth in the second section.

Newham Athletics Network 60m Open Series, London, 25 January

Asha Philip (Steve Fudge) blasted her way to the top of the Power of 10 60m rankings on her 2017 season opener, posting 7.28, a time which she replicated in the second series.

In the men’s event, Theo Etienne (Ryan Freckleton) went equal third on the rankings thanks to a season’s best of 6.64, which, like Philip, saw him take a comfortable victory.

Loughborough Students Indoor Open Meeting, 28 January 

Paralympic T44 high jump silver medallist Jonathan Broom-Edwards (Fuzz Caan) jumped an indoor personal best of 2.12m  to open up his season. 

There were also 60m PBs for Zac Shaw (Joe McDonnell) and Laura Sugar (Femi Akinsanya) at the event held in the Hipac.

Northern Cross Country Championships, Knowsley Park, 28 January

Claire Duck (Mike Baxter) was a runaway winner in the ladies race at Knowsley Park, continuing her good form after making her GB debut at the Great Edinburgh XCountry. In a close battle for the minor medals, Hattie Archer (Bud Baldaro) prevailed, ahead of triathlete Georgia Taylor-Brown (Paul Roden), who has missed the last few years with injury.

In the men’s race, in-form Ben Connor (Spencer Duval) won by over 30 seconds from Joe Steward (Harry Kelly) and Peter Newton. Scott Beattie (Baxter) is another athlete in good form, and he prevailed in the junior men’s race ahead of Patrick Dever (Andy Bibby), whilst Harriet Knowles-Jones (Roden) was a clear winner in the junior women’s event.

Midland Cross Country Championships, Loughborough, 28 January

In the 14.4km senior men’s race Alex Brecker (Geoffrey James) outlasted his rivals to take the win, with Toby Spencer and Jonny Thewlis (Tom Watson) taking the minor medals.

In the women’s race it was Juliet Potter (Roy Stowell) who took her third senior women’s title, ahead of Kate Holt (Alan Morris) and Chloe Richardson (Peter Stewart).

Southern Cross Country Championships, Parliament Hill, 28 January

In a thrilling senior women’s race Emily Hosker-Thornhill (Mick Woods) had the closing speed to edge out teammate Louise Small (Woods) by a mere second, with Hannah Walker (Peter McHugh) showing a return to form in third. The senior men’s race over a gruelling 15km was equally entertaining, with Andy Maud eventually getting the better of Richard Goodman (Woods) by 15 seconds, with GB mountain running international Chris Smith (Philip O’Dell) third.

In the junior men’s race it was an Aldershot, Farnham & District and Mick Woods one-two-three, as Ellis Cross won by 45 seconds from Gus Cockle and Dane Blomqvuist. Thurrock’s Gemma Holloway, eleventh at the European Junior Cross Country Championships won the junior women’s race.

Miting Etan, Bratislava, Slovakia, 29 January

Alicia Barrett (Toni Minichiello) clocked 8.36 for the win in her first race in the Slovakian capital before going one better with 8.28 later in the day, with the two times serving as consecutive lifetime bests.

World junior race walk champion Callum Wilkinson (Mick Graham) was also in action, as he clocked an indoor PB of 19:20.83 to claim second over 5000m.
