IAAF World Indoor Tour, Karlsruhe, Germany, 4 February

On a marvellous night for the British athletes in action at the third leg of the IAAF World Indoor Tour, Laura Muir (coach: Andy Young) once again stole the headlines as she stormed to 3000m victory in a new European Indoor Record. Taking on the likes of Hellen Obiri, Muir ran a fearless race as ever, taking the lead in the final 600m before kicking away to clear victory in 8.26.41. That puts her fifth on the world indoor all-time list.

There was another world lead from Andrew Pozzi (Benke Blomkvist) following his 7.56 clocking in Cardiff last weekend, as he lowered his personal best to 7.49 in the heats. Come the final, the man who has had his progress hampered by multiple injuries over the last few of years was raring to go, scorching to victory in a swift 7.44, well clear of Olympic silver medallist Orlando Ortega. There was also another personal best outing for David Omoregie (Blomkvist) as he ran 7.63 in the heat before running just one hundredth slower for fourth place in the final. In the women’s hurdles, Cindy Ofili (Garfield Ellenwood) set a season’s best of 7.96 to finish fifth.

In the sprints, Dina Asher-Smith (John Blackie) cruised to a 7.13 victory in her heat to equal the world lead, before running 7.15 for second place in the final. Meanwhile in the men’s 800m Guy Learmonth (Henry Gray) continued his good early season form with a 1.47.04 season’s best for third.

Kagawa Marugame International Half Marathon Japan, 5 February

Callum Hawkins (Robert Hawkins) put the disappointment of having his Scottish half marathon taken away from him two weeks ago by going even quicker to win the Kagawa Marugame International Half Marathon in Japan. Having clocked 60.24 at the Great Scottish Run, a course which turned out to be 150m short, Hawkins showed he has only got better since October as he ran 60.00 to beat a world class field. That time, a new Scottish record, is also the second fastest ever by a Brit and puts him fourth on the European all-time lists. It also puts him top of the 2017 IAAF world rankings.

2017 Armory Track Invitational, New York, USA, 4 February

Andrew Butchart (Derek Easton) was third Scot to go top of the world rankings for 2017 on a marvellous weekend for Scottish Athletics. Across the pond in America, he stepped down to race over a mile, showing his class with a runaway four second victory. His time of 3.54.23 puts him second the Scottish all-time list and third on the British equivalent.

Lynsey Sharp (Rana Reider) was also in action in the rarely run 600m, finishing fourth in a personal best of 1.27.16.

Nitro Athletics, Melbourne, 4 February

The first round of the new team-based Nitro athletics competition, which features a variety of non-traditional athletics event, got underway in Australia. With a team from England taking part, against the hosts Australia and the Bolt All-Stars, it was certainly athletics in a new format.

The stand out performance for England came in the mixed distance medley, where Margaret Adeoye, Conrad Williams (Lloyd Cowan), Alex Bell (Aaron Thomas) and Michael Rimmer (Jon Bigg) combined to finish second. There was also third place finishes for Alison Leonard (Bud Baldaro) and Jamie Webb (Rob Denmark) in the elimination miles.

Sydney Invitational, Australia, 4 February

Jade Lally (Andrew Neal) once again made the most of the good conditions at this time of year down under, as she set an early world lead in the discus. Competing in Sydney, Lally threw 62.15m in her first competition of the year, which is a IAAF World Championship qualifying mark.

Hustopečské skákáni, Czech Republic, 4 February

Chris Kandu (Fuzz Caan) opened his indoor season with a stunning personal best of 2.26m to finished third in this high quality high jump meeting. Clearing the same height was Allan Smith (Bryan Roy), the season’s best good for fourth place. In the B event Paralympic silver medallist Jonathan Broom-Edwards (Cann) cleared 2.05m, down on the 2.12m he cleared the previous weekend.

There was also a great start to the year for Morgan Lake (Aston Moore) as she took victory thanks to a 1.92m clearance. In fifth, Beth Partridge (Caan) produced another quality jump of 1.86m.

Meeting National Elite, Mondeville, France, 4 February

Kyle de Escofet (Andy Paul) continued his excellent start to 2017 as he recorded yet another personal best of 6.59, before running 6.61 to finish fourth in the final. There was also a personal best for young hurdler David King (James Hillier) who lowered his best 60mH mark to 7.65 as he took the win in a European Indoor qualifying time. There was also a winning performance for Eilidh Doyle (Malcolm Arnold) as she clocked 53.36 over 400m flat.

Camel City Invitational, Winston-Salem NC, USA, 3 February

Lee Emmanuel (Joe Franklin) was another British athlete to bag a European Indoor Championship qualifying mark this weekend, the 2015 European Indoor silver medallist showing once again he is in good form, as he so often is during the indoor season. He finished second in 7.49.29 over 3000m to go second on the Power of 10 2017 rankings.

BUCS Cross Country Championships, Sheffield, 4 February

Alex Teuten (Roderick Lock) and Rebecca Murray (Alex Stanton) took the spoils at Sheffield’s Graves Park, both pulling away from their nearest rivals to record narrow victories. Southampton’s Teuten got the better of Paulos Surafel (Craig Winrow) and Ellis Cross (Mick Woods) both of St Mary’s, as the team in blue and white took the team title ahead of Loughborough University.

In the women’s race it was the team in purple who took the team title, led home by Jess Judd (Mick Judd) in third, who was bettered by Emily Hosker-Thornhill (Woods) and the winner Murray.

European Clubs Cross Country, Albuferia, Portugal, 5 February

Steph Twell (Mick Woods) led Aldershot, Farnham and District to European bronze medals as she finished fourth on a firm but technical course in the Portuguese seaside town of Albuferia. There was also a storming run for Louise Small (Woods) in seventh place. In the men’s race, Jonny Hay (Woods) was the leading Brit in 20th place.

Alsager 5, Cheshire, 5 February

Jack Martin (David Turnbull) produced one of the runs of his career to take an impressive victory in 23.44, clear of runner-up Jonny Mellor (Steve Vernon) who crossed the line in 23.57. In the women’s race Lauren Howarth (Vernon) sprinted to victory in 27.23, edging out Sonia Samuels by a mere second.

International PSD Bank Meeting, Dusseldorf, Germany, 1 February

Earlier this week the IAAF World Indoor Tour hosted the second of three legs in Germany at the PSD Bank Meeting. Asha Philip (Steve Fudge) was the standout British performer as she finished third in the 60m in a season’s best of 7.18. In the men’s equivalent, James Dasaolu (Lloyd Cowan) opened his season with a 6.63 run for fifth.

Shelayna Oskan-Clarke (Jon Bigg) also kicked off her 2017 campaign in Germany, the 2015 World Championship finalist sixth in 2.03.63. Cindy Ofili (Garfield Ellenwood) was also in action in the 60mH, running a season’s best of 8.12 in the heats before coming seventh in the final in 8.16.

Lakes Day 25km, Australian Time Trials Association, Perth, Australia, 5 Feb

Hannah Cockroft (Jenni Banks), Richard Chiassaro (Banks), Nathan Maguire and Carly Tait raced over the half marathon on Sunday in Australia, with Cockroft pushing to a sub-one hour time on her first attempt at the distance and Chiassaro posting 45:34.
