Stanford Invitational, California, USA, 31 March – 1 April
On her 10,000m debut, Eilish McColgan (coach: Liz McColgan-Nuttall) finished third in a high quality race, running inside the IAAF World Championships London 2017 qualifying mark with a time of 32.10.59. Just a second and one place behind was Charlotte Taylor (Helen Lehman-Winters), the San Francisco University student also taking a remarkable 74 seconds off her personal best, and also achieving a qualifying standard for London.
Ieuan Thomas (James Thie) recorded an impressive 8:33.68 3000m steeplechase personal best to finish second in the A race, despite a mid-race fall. That time was inside the Welsh Commonwealth Games standard for the distance.
In the 5,000m Alex George (Paul de-Camps) sliced nine seconds off his personal best for the distance as he finished fifth, comfortably inside the European U23 Championships qualifying standard. In the women’s equivalent, Amy Eloise Neale won on her debut over the distance in a time of 15:39.30.
In the field, Matti Mortimore (Justin St Clair) added 32cm to the personal best he recorded two weeks ago, his 77.47m throw was the best javelin performance by a British male since 2012. In the men’s hammer, Nick Miller (Tore Gustafsson) also started his season with a bang, winning with a 75.58m throw in round two. Taylor Campbell (John Pearson) was also in action, and he recorded a personal best of 72.89m, surpassing the European U23 Championships qualifying distance.
In the men’s 1500m, a bizarre incident saw Michael Rimmer (Jon Bigg) DNF, as an official stepped out right in front of him just before the bell.

IAAF Permit Race Walking Meeting, Rio Maier, Portugal, 1 April
Tom Bosworth (Andi Drake) placed second in the 20km race walk, with his third fastest time ever, and one of his most notable career results to date. He set a time of 80.58 to go inside the qualifying mark for the World Championships this summer, and was involved in quite a contest with eventual winner Eider Arevalo of Colombia. It was also the best result by a Briton in a IAAF permit series event.
Florida Relays, USA, 30 March – 1 April
A number of British athletes kick-started their outdoor season’s in Florida, Zak Seddon leading the way as he set a World Championships qualifying standard as he recorded a solo 8.30.17 victory in the 3000m steeplechase, a personal best. In the middle distance events, Marilyn Okoro (Johnny Gray) was also victorious, winning the women’s 800m in 2.02.50.
There was also British interest in the 400m, Desiree Henry (Rana Reider) opening her season with a 53.33 time, good for fourth. In the men’s equivalent there were personal bests for Edward Amaning and Tom Somers (Benke Blomkvist), the former finishing third in 46.77 in section three, whilst Somers won section four in 47.07.

Carlsbad 5000, USA, 1-2 April
Andy Vernon (Nic Bideau) continued his recent good form on the roads, with a fourth place finish in a time of 13:53 with compatriots Adam Clarke and Tom Lancashire (Steve Cram) 11th and 13th in times of 14:25 and 14:31 respectively, the latter setting a PB.

Greater Manchester Marathon, Manchester, 2 April
Georgia Bruinvels repeated her 2015 victory in the women’s race, albeit her winning time of 2.37.03 faster than two years ago. The men’s race went the way of local debutant Patrick Martin (David Turnbull), who stopped the clock at 2.22.37, over a minute clear of his nearest rival.

Cardiff Bay 10K, Cardiff, 2 April
Welshman Dewi Griffiths (Kevin Evans) scored victory on home soil with an impressive 29.07 front running performance, winning by almost a full minute.

Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow Spring Open, Eton, 1 April
Jake Norris (Paul Dickenson) produced the best ever hammer throw by a British 17 year old with the 7.26kg implement, his early season mark of 68.86m showing a lot of promise for the year ahead.

Tom Scott Memorial 10 (including Scottish Championships), Motherwell, 2 April
Paralympian Derek Rae (Ron Morrison) continued his preparations for this month’s London Marathon with a 10 mile personal best in Motherwell at the Scottish Championships event. His 53:38 time was 22 seconds quicker than last year’s event which shows he is in good form heading into the 26.2 mile event.
