Pure Athletics Spring Invitational, Clermont, Florida, USA, 15 April

Danny Talbot (coach: Benke Blomkvist) ran the fastest time ever by a British athlete in any conditions, clocking 19.86 as he won in the men’s 200m. His performance was however aided by a 2.9m/s tailwind, with even greater tailwinds aiding so many other performances on the day.

In the 100m, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey (Blomkvist) and Ojie Edoburun (Jonas Dodoo) both went sub ten, aided by a 4.4m/s tailwind, Harry AA taking the spoils 9.90 to 9.93. Edoburun backed up his performance with another sub ten clocking as he won heat 11 in 9.99 (+4.9). There was also a rare outing over 200m for James Dasaolu (Lloyd Cowan), and he finished second in heat five in 20.62 (+3.2).

In the sprint hurdles, which aren’t always helped as much by extreme winds, Andrew Pozzi (Blomkvist) opened his outdoor campaign with winning times of 13.13 (+5.8) and 13.17 (+2.2) as many other Brits got their season’s underway in Florida.

Out in the field, Paralympian Olivia Breen (Aston Moore) leapt to a new lifetime best of 4.46m in the long jump, with a windy 4.88m (+3.1) also forming part of an impressive series, while five-time global medallist Stef Reid (Moore) opened her year with a best of 5.53m (+3.6).

U Tech Track & Field Classic, Kingston, Jamaica, 15 April

Following the windy theme, Zharnel Hughes (Glen Mills) started his season with a bang, stepping down to 100m to post a 10.08 winning time, albeit aided by a 2.3m/s tailwind, just over the 2.0 legal limit. Miguel Francis (Mills) was also in action, winning the 200m in 20.44 (+1.7m/s).

Bryan Clay Invitational, California, USA, 13-14 April

Adam Gemili (Rana Reider) clocked his fastest ever season opener over 100m out in California, as he prevailed in 10.08 (+1.8), more than a tenth of a second faster than he’s started any previous campaign. Also on top form was Desiree Henry (Reider), as she produced a very impressive 11.09 (0.6) and 22.69 (1.4) 100m-200m double, which bodes very well for the rest of the season.

In the 400m Anyika Onuora (Reider) took victory in a 53.59, whilst Shara Proctor (Reider) competed in the triple jump for the first time in five years, winning with a 13.82m mark, just shy of her 13.88m personal best from 2010.

In the endurance events European Junior 1500m champion Josh Kerr (Joe Franklin) sent shock waves around America as he set an NCAA leading time of 3:35.99, obliterating his old personal best of 3.41.08 set last season. That mark comes just a month after he won the NCAA Indoor Championship mile title, and is also 0.01 inside the London 2017 qualifying standard. He now tops the Power of 10 rankings and is the second fastest British teenager of all time, behind only Steve Cram.

Mt. SAC Relays, Torrance, California, USA, 13-15 April

Chijindu Ujah (Jonas Dodoo) improved his 100m season’s best set just last weekend to 10.10 (0.1) to finish second in the invitational race, two places and seven hundredths ahead of his GB teammate Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake (Dennis Shaver). In the 5,000m there was victory for Marc Scott (Steve Gulley) thanks to a 13:37.45 run, whilst Amy Eloise-Neale set a personal best of 4.13.81 for fifth in the women’s 1500m, putting her third on the Power of 10.

In the field, five time Paralympic discus medallist Dan Greaves (John Godina) improved his season’s best by almost four metres thanks to a 58.33m effort.

BAA 5K, Boston, USA, 15 April

Chris O’Hare (Terrance Mahon) was in action for the first time since September last year, the new father finishing eighth in a high quality field with a 13.46 personal best. One second and one place behind came Andrew Heyes (Steve Vernon), whilst Lauren Howarth (Vernon) was also in personal best setting form, her 15.39 time good for fifth in the women’s race.

Boston Marathon, Boston, USA, 17 April

Jade Jones, Simon Lawson and Callum Hall (all Ian Thompson-coached) were all in action as they fine tune preparations ahead of the London marathon this coming Sunday, with each of the trio posting lifetime bests of 1:41.44, 1:25.06 and 1:38.51 respectively on a day of bright and windy conditions on the USA’s eastern coast.

Aggie Invitational, Greensboro, North Carolina, USA, 14 April

Older sister Tiffany just got the better of her younger sister Cindy (both: Garfield Ellenwood) as the duo got their season’s underway in North Carolina. Porter took the win in the final, stopping the clock at 13.07 (+1.7m/s), just edging out Ofili by two hundredths of a second.

Leiria Throws Meeting, Portugal, 15 April

Zane Duquemin (John Hillier) produced his furthest throw since 2012 to extend his lead at the top of the Power of 10 discus rankings courtesy of a 62.68m effort.

Tom Botts Invitational, Columbia, USA, 14-15 April

Nic Percy (Vesteinn Hafsteinsson) set season’s bests and Scottish qualifying standards for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in both the discus and hammer on a successful weekend across the pond. Starting with the discus, where he went second on the Power of 10 with a 61.27m throw, the Nebraska University student also won the hammer with a 67.72m mark.

Horned Frog Invitational, Fort Worth, Texas, USA, 15 April

Jacob Fincham-Dukes (Zivile Pukstiene) went over eight metres for the first time in his career, but unfortunately his 8.02m effort was aided by 3.4m/s tailwind, over the legal limit. He did however clock a wind legal 100m personal best of 10.55 (+1.9), whilst his fellow GB long jumper Lorriane Ugen (Shawn Jackson) ran 11.31 (+2.5), a windy PB.

California Invitational Combined Events, California, USA, 12-13 April

John Lane (Toni Minichiello) improved his decathlon personal best by over 40 points as he posted a score of 7965 to finish second in California. Along the way he produced personal bests of 2.05m in the high jump and 43.06m in the discus to go second on the Power of 10, just eight points behind Tim Duckworth.

In the women’s event, Harvard University student Zoe Hughes (Lloyd Cowan) improved her heptathlon lifetime best by 473 points to bag the European Junior Championship qualifying standard. She finished with a score of 5444 points, aided by personal bests in the javelin and 100mH.
